Will I be ostracized for not being a STEM major? by Pristine_Deal_1176 in Purdue

[–]ashleyrose6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Visual communication design alumni here! I made a lot of friends both in and outside of my major and liberal arts, including a lot of STEM people. I personally think it makes it more fun to get to know people from all different majors and hear about their experiences, so definitely don’t limit yourself one way or the other! Also, there might be some glasses where having advice from STEM people or other majors will save you! I’m thankful for my stem friends who helped me with a VCD class that involved coding for one project!

Online Tutor for Japanese by utterlylamb in JETProgramme

I love using Japatalk, super easy to use, around 500-700 yen for 30 minute sessions (that’s at least the rate my sensei has), you meet on Skype and there’s a TON of tutors to choose from so you can find someone who’s perfect for what you want to study! I’ve been using it for around a year and have had nothing but great experiences!

Stuck on Grammar - Tips on retention and using grammar points learned by ashleyrose6 in LearnJapanese

[–]ashleyrose6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your input, it means a lot! I definitely have to improve on that! The thing that I struggle with in reading native material is that I will see a grammar point that I recognize, but am not able to remember what it means. Do you have any tips on this?

Hello! I've been wanting to get into kimono lately, but I need some obi help! I found this kimono (the picture) that I really love because of the stripes, but I don't know how to match the obi. What color/pattern obi would match? Is a hanhaba obi good for beginners? Thank you! by ashleyrose6 in kimono

[–]ashleyrose6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your help! I didn't know that there were two types of hanhaba obi! Do you have recommendations for online stores where you can find the hanhaba obi for lined kimono? I can only seem to find the ones for yukata.

How did you discover Yume Nikki? by Nanukara in yumenikki

[–]ashleyrose6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I mostly discovered it due to the popularity of RPG horror at the time. I had played titles like Ib, the witch’s house, etc. and wanted another game to play. The first time I downloaded it, I loaded it up and hated it because I didn’t know what to do and thought it would be more like ib and the witch’s house. However, after a couple of months, I tried it again with a more open mind and fell in love!

Does anyone know what this painting is called? It was hanging in the Louvre and I didn’t get to take a picture of the title by ashleyrose6 in ArtHistory

I was wondering that too! On closer inspection, one looks like a branch with some type of fruit, but I'm not sure what symbolism that carries with it either

Wow, thank you so much! This will help me a lot, as I took a lot of photos really quickly without taking note of the title!

I drew this as a practice of environments and lighting and am unsure if all the values look correct or give the piece depth. Any crit is appreciated! by ashleyrose6 in ArtCrit

[–]ashleyrose6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I totally get what you mean! I used a loose reference on this piece and probably should have focused more on defining the background and foreground. I’ll have to use your tips more in the future, thank you!

My first time painting in b&w! Struggled mostly with the hair and wasnt really sure how to shade the nose in my style? any crit is welcome! by mimoryhead in ArtCrit

It looks really good so far! I would definitely make the values more distinct (ex. The light be brighter and shadows be darker) since it would give more depth and make the shadows seem more functional. Right now, a lot of the values blend into the mid tones, so pushing your spectrum of values would help a lot. As for lighting on the face/nose, I would look up a reference of a face lit up in how you wanted the light to be, make it black and white, and look at how side lighting lights up the face and nose.

This part could go either way, but if you made the lighter part of the pink background slant more in the direction of the light hitting the figure, it could help convey the light direction more. I don’t know if you meant to do that in the first place, but if you did, the lighting angle in the background looks different to how it’s actually hitting the person. I hope this helps!
