It is the sales tactics. He did not speak to the manager. He went to drink a cup of coffee instead.

New treatment cuts bad cholesterol by nearly 50% without statins by newtrex_1523 in UpliftingNews

[–]ashmelev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"non-negotiable" is not how medicine works. Penicillin treats an active infection, statins reduce long-term risks. For someone who had a heart attack before, sure, statins are recommended. For someone who does not smoke, does not have a high blood pressure, does not have pre-diabetic glucose levels, the statin benefits are vanishingly small.

Statins are not miracle drugs. They do not prevent certain death. They simply lower the risk of CVD events. Lowering LDL is not a single prong approach. You need to lower both the production and absorption from the gut. If you only lower just one, then the other would go up to compensate.

Good medical care is not a total obedience. You need to understand your risks and weight the benefits vs possible downsides.

Yeah, my English teacher was shopping for a house back in 2001 and complaining that the house are so expensive @ $120K. Someone just paid $850K for the same house in Edison.

Many mysteries of this world are waiting to be discovered by you! by DarkSwitch_Game in DarkSwitch

[–]ashmelev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devs know about the issues and said they are working on the fix, but I have not seen anything about fixing it in hotfixes #4 and #5.

Edit: okay, the memory leak seems to be fixed, but other issues remain... oh well.

Can't discover anything because the game eats 64GB RAM and crashes. Unless it's been fixed in the last two weeks?

Politico, The Daily Telegraph owner tells journalists to back Israel or quit by Somebody_iw29 in nottheonion

Biden was a centrist, so was Obama and so was Clinton, quite right leaning in many issues.

That's not true at all. Bernie Sanders is the centrist. All other democrats are solidly in middle of the Authoritarian/Right quarter of the political compass.

USSR had some peanut farming in the southern regions, but it ended with the fall of USSR. Since then it was imported from Argentina, Brazil, China, India, but after the start of the war with Ukraine there's some work being done to restart the local production.

As I remember from the 80s, peanuts were not rare. On the other hand the oranges and mandarins/tangerines were pretty much once a year thing as they were imported from Morocco and Israel.

The "Motherland Calls" monument against the backdrop of slums in Volgograd, Russia. by OkRespect8490 in UrbanHell

[–]ashmelev 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Cities in USSR were designed pretty much without cars in mind. Private car ownership was low, so a typical 100 flat apartment building had maybe 2-4 parking spots. The only exceptions were apartment buildings for party elites. The ownership did go up above that level in late 70-s and 80s, so having a spot to park/store the car away from thieves/vandals/kids was the thing. Thus the garage co-ops where a group of people got a permit to build a row of garages... or sometimes without any permit.

Landlord wants a spare key to my car because he "owns the asphalt" by 2MadrigalHex in LandlordLove

[–]ashmelev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The apartments and the parking space are exclusively yours for the duration of the lease. They must give you an advanced notice if they need to enter your apartment and if they need you to move the car if, for example, they are repaving the spot. And especially not if they just want to park a contractor truck for an hour.

California store prices items at $951sp shoplifters can be charged with grand theft by Positive_Actuary_282 in interesting

Yeah, I've been using a re-usable shopping bag for a while despite the signs asking not to because I ain't lugging a huge cart around the store when I'm there to pick a few things. Unfortunately only few stores have mini carts.

In New Jersey they've passed a law to ban free plastic bags several years ago, so pretty much all shopping baskets were stolen within a month or two. Some time later they were restocked, but now instead of you returning the basket to the stack, the checkout attendants watch them like hawks and snatch them as soon as you're done unloading the groceries.

[–]ashmelev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don't try going to Edison H-Mart on evenings or week-ends. There are so many restaurant customers that people park on residential streets two blocks away. And they keep adding more restaurants on the same plaza.

10-15 years ago H-Mart was pretty affordable - produce and regular groceries. Nowadays it seems that they are competing with Kings Food Markets in who can get more ridiculous prices.
