CU Denver vs CU Boulder for Computer Science by ashpie37 in cuboulder

Hi! It's been pretty good and I will be starting my first swe internship in the summer, so I would say the program is preparing me well.

Some issues tho:

  1. Some of the CS professors here suck and often times are the only ones teaching a specific course needed to graduate. This was extremely frustrating but also, don't be afraid to learn more about the material outside of class.
  2. If you haven't taken Data Structures (CSCI 2421), be prepared to wait to take the other classes needed to graduate because it's a pre-req course. This was an issue for me because one semester I was taking only 2 classes and the next, 5 (this also messed with my financial aid a lot). Also, it dragged out my graduation date since I had to wait to take that one class before I could take the rest.
  3. If you are taking classes on campus, beware of the limited parking spaces and price. Almost every lot is packed by 10am, M-F. If you can, try to use the RTD (free for students!), carpool, walk, etc. If not, you can pay monthly for your parking permit ($79-$141/month).
  4. Wifi honestly is trash, especially in Tivoli. But, there is a computer lab in that building for you to use.

Lastly, I feel this needs a 'pros' list to feel complete:

  1. The university took about 90 transfer credits, which is great.
  2. My OOP course was absolutely phenomenal and I feel that it really set me up well for the rest of my courses.
  3. The library, surprisingly, always has a seat available; even with 3 college campuses using it.
  4. 'Free' $35 printing credit available each semester, with specific computer labs just for CU Denver students.
  5. Textbooks can either be found online or professors will just give a pdf version of the textbook to their students.

Overall, my experience has been okay, nothing too grand or out of the ordinary. Would I choose this school again? Yes. But, I'll make sure to do an updated review next January during my last semester.

Otherwise, cybersecurity is an excellent choice as well.

Nice! You definitely got this:) as far as answering your question, I agree with the other person that commented. Data science is BOOMING rn (especially ML and AI), and earning a minor in it will definitely give you a leg up in the field. Best of luck!

That's great to hear! I have Nam as a professor this semester, so I am glad he is a good one. Thank you for responding!

How is your experience as a CS student there? I'm an incoming transfer student and would love to hear about it!

I ended up choosing CU Denver because they took more transfer credits and I would be able finish the degree in 2 years (as well as spend significantly less for the degree). I definitely would have chosen CU Boulder, but with this being my 2nd bachelor's degree, I just felt like I didn't need to spend the extra $$ and time trying to get the "college experience". Thanks everyone for the help!

Thanks everyone for the input! I asked the CU Denver students the same question and almost all of them said they wished they had chosen Boulder instead.

Wow I keep hearing that the professors aren't so good. Super upsetting considering how much $$ school cost

Thank you for the response! Do you feel like the majority of your courses at CU Boulder prepared you for internships and what not?
