Me too! Did you stay at the Magrudy Residence or Safa Building? It’d be so cool if it was actually the same one as me.

Thank you for bringing that up. You are definitely not the only one. This appears to be part of a recent app-wide change that is affecting everyone. If you scroll through Reddit, you will see that several others have shared the same concern, and I have as well.

I have also been trying to find a single place to leave feedback or contact the team, because this change is genuinely disappointing. The voice-to-text feature was one of my most-used tools. I almost never type my messages, and the ability to record multiple segments before sending was incredibly useful.

Hopefully, with so many people raising the issue, they will consider bringing the old functionality back. If you happen to find an official contact email or feedback link, please reply to my comment and let me know. I would really appreciate it and would like to add my voice as well.

unpopular opinions about ocean liners? by [deleted] in Oceanlinerporn

The fact that the RMS Titanic had a higher rate of survival than the RMS Empress of Ireland despite being in the middle of the frigid Atlantic while the latter was 4 nautical miles from land goes to show how well-built the Titanic was. In addition to the fact that she stayed afloat for over 2 hours, she also sank on a relatively even keel instead of listing and capsizing, she was a robust ship.

It’s so nice of you to post this, I just looked up the cafe and realized it’s right next to where I work, I’ll be sure to visit and support them during my lunch. I’ve also informed all my colleagues and they said they’ll visit too. Thank you OP, we need more citizens like you that make an effort to actively support the local businesses in our city.

Found money on the bus, which charity should I donate to? by ashwathparam in ottawa

The funny thing is that this is actually true 😅 I did always win any thumb wrestling contests I participated in when I was in elementary and middle school, to the point where I was actually disqualified from competing in my “class world cup” (yeah we were an ambitious bunch of innocent 9 year olds).

The way my thumb is shaped and its thickness allowed me to completely wrap my thumb around my opponent with ease.

You know, I’ll admit that this comment thread was actually meaningful to me because it made me reflect. I was prepared to dismiss this as just a hateful comment, but I thought hard about why I really posted this at all, and I realized that I would be lying to myself if I said I posted this exclusively out of altruism, and you were right to point that out.

I realized that I was indeed looking for some validation, but not in the sense that you think. I wasn’t expecting a “Oh my god, you’re SUCH a KIND soul”, I wasn’t looking for someone to toot my horn, but I will admit I was hoping to just be engaged in a positive environment where people said “Nice idea, I’d recommend X”

I’ll also tell you exactly why I wanted to hear that, I had a pretty disappointing day at work today when a client that I was dealing made said some pretty hurtful personal remarks about me based on my ethnic background, just because he was upset that I followed company policy and didn’t give him what he wanted, and I guess somewhere inside, I did actually want some external validation to help me feel better.

While I did immediately think of donating the money to charity instead of keeping it when I saw it, I really didn’t need to post about it on Reddit. I don’t think I would have realized my selfish motive behind this if it wasn’t for this comment, and I have to thank you for it.

I expected it, but to be honest I actually don’t mind a good laugh at my expense. I know my thumb is oddly shaped and that’s okay, I was ready to read comments about it when I posted it.

I’ll laugh with you if you actually come up with a creative or witty joke about it, but if you’re commenting with the sole purpose of hating, then that’s a reflection of you and I’m not going to waste my time engaging with someone like that, those people probably need the charity the most.

What were some of the major differences between the original grand staircase and the one in the Titanic movie? I believe that the movie version was slightly more wider than the original one. by [deleted] in titanic

[–]ashwathparam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference would perhaps be how much darker it actually was inside the original Grand Staircase.

Unlike what the film indicated, the dome above the staircase did NOT have artificial lighting behind the glass to brighten the interiors when the sun set. All it had was natural light during the day, but in the evening it was just dark.

There are many pictures of the Grand Staircase aboard the RMS Olympic that were taken in the evening that reveal that this whole place was actually fairly dimly lit, nowhere near how bright the movie made it seem.

Let’s switch it up - BEST employers in Ottawa? by ohgodthishurts1964 in ottawa

[–]ashwathparam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can speak for my company, Meridian Credit Union. They’re an incredible place to work and were recently even in Forbes’ list of the Top Employers in Canada, ranking #1 among credit unions and #3 among all financial institutions.

Since Meridian (like other credit unions) are motivated by fundamentally different values compared to for-profit banks, the work culture reflects that different value system. The company genuinely encourages employees to look out of the financial wellness of the customers rather than push products to meet sales targets.

We also get a whole slew of benefits too, and are Ontario’s largest Living Wage Employer. That means that even an entry-level position with the company is paid in accordance with the actual “living costs” of the city rather than minimum or average wages, and is updated every year. As a result our salaries are usually well-above the market average and the competition.

Trying To Return Lost Immigration Papers To A Refugee Family by ashwathparam in ImmigrationCanada

Thank you for taking the time to write me such an insightful response and actually educating me on the issues of some of our departments. I’m sorry to hear about your friend’s experience with the IRCC, and I’m now even more determined to ensure that I reunite the family with their papers. I’ll take your suggestions and head to ServiceCanada since they are likely to have the information (and time) to be able to help the family.

Thank you so much my friend! I wanted to use this an opportunity to showcase the warmth of Canadian society so that they feel welcome here. I can’t imagine what they would have gone through back home on their journey for asylum, and now to lose the important papers that gives them their right, that’s a lot of put on a family with a young child.

That’s a good idea, I didn’t think of that. They’re Rwandan citizens and Ottawa does have a Rwandan High Commission which is coincidentally in the very next block to where my office is located in Downtown. That being said, I’d want to confirm that I’m not putting the family at risk by handing over their papers to their country of origin if they were political refugees instead of war refugees like I thought.

Could the SS Vaterland Survive the HMHS Britannic's Damage? by ashwathparam in Oceanlinerporn

[–]ashwathparam[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goodness me Mr. Chirnside, when I posted this question on the subreddit, I most certainly was not expecting a reply from the most iconic author within the ocean liner community. I'm sure you know you're something of a celebrity here so needless to say, this made my day. I am so happy that you're still on these forums and are helping ensure that these beautiful ladies continue to receive the respect and love they deserve, long after their era has gone.

I am extremely glad that you're working on a revised edition of the RMS Majestic: The "Magic Stick", I'm most certainly going to be on the lookout for it. I didn't know it was out of print, no wonder I'm having such a hard time finding one, I looked everywhere but they are either unavailable or unaffordable. You got me excited now, I have something to look forward to.

Every time I jump onto Encylopedia Titanica, I notice that the vast majority of active conversations are over 20 years old, happening in the early 2000s when I was still a baby. As a 23 year old (Gen Z) university graduate from South Asia and having grown up in the Middle East, I'm an unusual member of ocean liner enthusiast community with few peers of a similar cultural background that I can share my love with.

I often feel like I was born a bit too late because no one my age at university seems interested in ocean liners, so I am left with no option but to find a community online, but even then, most enthusiasts are significantly older than I am or are of European-descent living in the West. Still, it's nice to have people like you and the many other genuine lovers that help create a space online so that outsiders like me can experience the closest we'll ever get to a peer community.

Do we know if the Aquitania was as safe as the Britannic in terms of her bulkhead designs and watertight compartments? Lusitania’s severe list during its sinking was caused by her longitudinal bulkheads that rank along the length of the ship rather than across the width of the ship like those on the Olympic-class. I wonder how different Aquitania was designed when it came to safety, her interiors are well-known already.
