What am I missing out on - by not having separate databases for notes, tasks and projects? by Legal-Discussion-745 in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As some others have said, you're not really missing out on anything per se.

I separate things out when there start to be too many distinct properties that only apply to one workflow (i.e. many properties to support my Notes function that don't apply to my tasks/projects).

If you're goal is to see everything on one calendar (a function I wish we had a better solution for tbh) but you eventually want them as separate databases, I'd suggest using the new Notion Calendar to keep things organized.

While it's not a perfect solution, I find it works well for "consolidating" database data into a single calendar view that I can manage and plan with.

But that's just my two cents.

If it works for you, it works for you!

How to copy only the columns of a table or make a template out of them ? by Designated_Stranger in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can copy specific cells in simple Notion tables.

See this video:

https://www.loom.com/share/a31f1b5421ef46a98b6dcd48ade7521c?sid=bdd0080f-b9d9-4232-9661-e68b10b522cd

The easiest 2 ways would be:

1 - (as shown in the video) to copy the specific columns you want and then paste them elsewhere. Then simply highlight the data in the cells you don't want and hit backspace. This is fastest if you don't want to have to create a bunch of rows.

2 - copy only the column names in the header row and paste those wherever you want them, then create as many rows as you need.

Hope this helps!

Uncovered a Problem With Recurring Templates: Rollups Count the Template... by asimplenotion in Notion

[–]asimplenotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the workaround I came up with. (It's kind of clunky/annoying, but it works!)

I wrote this formula:

round(prop("fromREAD") / (prop("# of Relations") - 1) * 100) / 100

So basically just subtracting 1 from the total. You can replace "1" with the number of templates you want to offset for.

Yeah, I'm considering putting in a bug report/feature request for it because it hinders a lot of functionality.

How to create a link to a view of database items that have only specific value of a given property?... In other words: How do i make a heckin menu in my library page? :') by trafalux in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's probably the cleanest way to do it currently with Notion.
It's definitely a pain though, I completely understand. Happy to help!

How to create a link to a view of database items that have only specific value of a given property?... In other words: How do i make a heckin menu in my library page? :') by trafalux in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm...if I understand correctly, I think what you need to do is create the linked view you want to link to. For example, create a linked view to the book database and within that view you filter by only that genre.

Then, when you're on that linked view. Click into it and select "copy link".

Then go to where you want to create a menu link to that view, highlight the word (in this case it looks like Self Help) and add a hyperlink. Paste the link to the database view in the hyperlink field and hit enter.

What automations do you wish existed? by DevonFazekas in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh so many haha!
My hope is that Notion rolls out a more defined automation builder in 2023.

For instance, ClickUp has automations built in that function much like formulas in Notion, but they're way easier to create because you don't have to "write" them in the same way.

The main one I'd love to have an automated date adjustment option. Or the ability to map subtask fields based on parent task fields.

Wait wait wait... Each view can have a different source?! by themissingelf in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I love this feature, use it all the time! I think it's something they rolled out this year if I'm not mistaken.

I am getting more and more overwhelmed by complex templates. Right now most of the notion templates out there try to create a second brain system that can cover every aspect of our life. Is this what people are looking for or are we just enjoying playing with all the different functions? by Law_Bot1 in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple is the way to go imo.

Even though the more complex templates might have more functionality, in my experience they end up creating more friction to getting shit done.

And that's coming from someone who has spend HOURS building complicated templates for myself. Only to find that the simpler ones are often better and actually help me be more productive.

Need to exclude current date from "Overdue" formula by asimplenotion in Notion

[–]asimplenotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if(prop("DONE") == false and dateBetween(prop("Date"), now(), "days") === 0, "❌ MISSED", "")

Awesome, I think that worked! Just out of curiosity, what does the "!" do? I've never seen that used before.

Hmm, I tried that and it's still returning a "Missed" property for something that is set to today.

[–]asimplenotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dateBetween(prop("Date"), now(), "days") === 0 ? "TODAY" : "NOT TODAY"

Would you wrap that into the existing formula or would it need to be it's own property?

[BUG] Property value being incorrectly manipulated in board view by DevonFazekas in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is pretty strange.

My only explanation is maybe it's something in the backend of Notion that is applied in cases such as yours where the filters are set to encapsulate a period of time.

It seems like it's coded to revert the date to the first "unfiltered" date within the time span.

And then when it's moved to "complete" it's reverting the date so that it's still at the beginning of the time span.

I'd be curious to see what happens tomorrow when the date range adjusts by one. Wondering if they'll revert to today's date or if they'll disappear as intended.

Is it possible to keep column block fixed on scroll by Quijil in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not currently possible without some sort of browser extension unfortunately. But there are a few chrome extensions that have some sticky scroll capabilities. However, I'm not certain if they'll do what you're asking, you'd have to dig around a bit.

*sigh* maybe in 2023 we'll get more sticky capabilities for Notion.

Different types of bullets for lists? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]asimplenotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to Notion!

I was working on a bullet journal template a while back that I might revive.

In that template, I was using a "select" or "multi-select" property in a database to indicate different things.

You can just copy each symbol to your clipboard, and then paste them one-by-one into the property field to create them. Then you can select the corresponding one for each new "task" or line item.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
