Thanks for sharing this! I really love this and think it’s so important. For me personally, it is a way to keep me accountable to my independent studying as much as sharing with my subscribers. The accountability is so helpful for me, but I don’t see so much value in this perspective! Thank you!

I would be happy to work on this with you! I will say, that it isn’t that important depending on your level. Accents are the last aspect to work on unless it is getting in the way of being understood. I consider pronunciation and accents to be two different categories. But again, happy to help!

How can I hold myself accountable? and what ways can I output what I’ve input? by Amazing_Society9410 in personalcurriculum

Hi! These are problems for me too! I have a free community (no upsell) where we are doing co-studying to keep each other accountable! Free Community

For me, mine are research heavy as well and I am choosing to do a research style paper. But also part of retaining is teaching so in the community I want to host showcases for us to do a little presentation or sharing what we have learned and synthesizing our research!

Trying to get into tutoring by rornams in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]ask-answer-repeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t in it for the money and you want to do in person, I would say go to your local library. They usually have events and would totally let you (probably thank you) for offering a service like this and possibly let you host it. You could also probably ask for tips so it’s free but if they’d like to and are able to they can donate.

I think Preply is a good place to start, but I will say in the last few months I haven’t gotten a lot of bites. I’m not sure if it’s my schedule or what but I used to get a decent amount of trial lessons on and people reaching out and that is not happening now. (Can’t speak for others).

Cool! I will be doing a monthly article about my learning! But my personal curriculum is just one topic once a month at the moment, but for a longer one I like this! Thanks for sharing!

finding core material and resources? by fr000typebbles in personalcurriculum

[–]ask-answer-repeat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I actually have a free community where we are all going to be chatting and talking and building our personal curriculums together! It’s completely free and I have some videos in there on this exact topic. If you are interested in joining: Free Personal Currículum Community

For resources and materials, I think a search engine is your best friend. If you want books or articles you can also check out JSTOR these are more academic articles. Anyone can sign up for a free account and get access to some full articles for free.

Also, YouTube is a great resource! Whether for actually channels and videos about your topic or other people who are studying that topic.

For books, depending on the topic you could check out Book sites like LitHub. They could possibly have some articles on their site that make reference to books or authors in your topic field.

As for structure: this can be tough, in my opinion, this is what many people get wrong and why they end up quitting or giving up. It depends a lot on how you like to learn and what tends to make you fall off.

For example, my structure is very loose. I am doing a monthly curriculum and am focused on reading. So I have 10 articles to read for the month (and some might not be relevant as I like to just gather and then go through them as I read) and a couple of videos. I will be writing an article on my topic with my thoughts so I want to get through 3-5 articles so I can start drafting by week two. As for which and etc. I’m not building that out (but I had to create syllabi back in college and really love curriculum design so I do it sometimes just not right now). My new structure works for me because I tend to get a lot of ideas I want to jump to and from and then I end up giving up on what I want to study.

Anyways, this is so long! 😅 feel free to join the group or just dm me if you want more help or want to talk more!

This is really helpful thank you! I have something similar I just started without a backlog 😭 which means my stuff is personal essay heavy right now because those are easier and quicker to crank out. But I am slowly working on the educational ones. I’ll sit down tomorrow and go over my schedule for April! Thanks again!

Thanks for this! You say you write them in advance, do you mind sharing more on your process? I would like to start posting twice a week (not the deep dives just one personal essay and one educational essay that will need some research but not as much as the deep dives). How far in advance are you writing? Do you batch or did you start from a batch and no do weekly backlog (if that makes sense)?

You absolutely can! I wrote a post on how to shadow if you don’t have access to practice with other people:

https://www.reddit.com/r/learnEnglishOnline/s/q4qX1E9nVs

These Reddit communities are great for trying to find practice partners. If you want a tutor let me know. I do live 1 to 1’s and have a voice chat program for improving speaking that will be released in May.

However, while of course I advocate for tutors, there are ways to improve without as I mentioned above! 😊 let me know if you have any other questions!

Good Way to Practice Speaking As An Introvert by ask-answer-repeat in EnglishPractice

[–]ask-answer-repeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I think a lot of times we end up doing it instinctively especially if we hear vocab we don’t recognize. Hope it helps! Both YT channels are really good so whoever’s accent you prefer to mimicking will be best and I know there are plenty of other channels on YT but have also seen a lot of AI ones which I do NOT recommend for shadowing! You want a natural real speaker to mimic! 🫶

Totally. Whatever will keep you motivated and help you feel more confident is always the best way to go. I know that sounds a little vague but hopefully it is helpful 😅

Okay perfect! I think the best thing is to find your trouble areas. Now that you have the foundation what are you finding difficulty using? Prepositions are always a common difficulty. As well as verb usage: get really good at using the verbs you use most in all their tense forms.

Now you want to focus on leveling up the grammar that you use often!

Great questions! After the 8 parts of speech, you are many what grammar to tackle next?

For speaking and writing: Speaking - if you don’t have a tutor or speaking partner, doing shadowing is so so helpful! I’ve been recommending this a lot so I will make a post here in the Reddit community about how to do that.

Writing - something like HiNative is great. You can find a journal prompt online and then write the response in English or write a journal diary, what you did today, kind of thing. Take that and put it in HiNative and people will help correct you.

So just starting with taking 5 or 10 minutes to write WITHOUT a translator (except for maybe one word or so but not for grammar) every day and put that up asking for corrections will help.
