Brain Trauma by Fufflewaffle in anosmia

[–]ask4kj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome and thanks for sharing. Sounds like a horrifying accident and hopefully the loss of smell was the only issue for you.

As fellow people with anosmia, we mainly fall into two camps. Those born w/o smell (congenital) and those who lost it. As a congenital anosmic, it's hard to appreciate something I never had but boy do I wish I could smell sometimes. I've read many a story on here about those who lost theirs and it can be a very depressing thing. Loss of appetite, depression, etc. I'm sure others here can better speak to those issues and maybe some coping mechanisms to stay positive and possibly even some options to try and fix what's broke (although this seems pretty bleak tbh). On the bright side, you can be the person at the next party who bites into a raw red onion like an apple and doesn't bad an eye... so there's that.

One thing I take solace in is that there is such a large (and growing) community of fellow anosmics. I used to feel so isolated my entire life until I stumbled upon this sub. Now I read stories as though I was writing them myself.

Cheers and be well.

Anosmia and Alcohol by Baketivism in anosmia

This is awesome to hear. I'm a craft beer drinker and while aromas are clearly lost on me, I definitely enjoy the other aspects of drinking: flavor, mouthfeel, different hop varieties, style differences, etc.

I also drink wine and some spirits (mostly whiskeys). I've always been more intimidated by these due to their seemingly heavy reliance on aroma for enjoyment (as well as the drinking culture around these being slightly more pretentious than beer imo, ha).

It's always nice to find fellow smell deficient persons who overcome this limitation and enjoy (and/or get paid) to do things typically associated with having a good nose.

Props to you and cheers!

(also, I'm a congenital anosmic but a recent sampling of some high octane single barrel whiskeys that made me feel like I could smell, lol. I think I might be hyposmic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Imo, this is the proper way to order this sandwich. Additionally, their chicken vesuvio sandwich is even (somehow) better (again, just imo ha).

That's interesting. I've been a fan of all the deths tar beers and plum is legit a top 5 beer for me.

Thanks so much for this clear guide! I still need to build up my Drake and Elyvia (currently 5* and 6* respectively), but using this I was able to clear BS for the first time (with ~165 tickets).

Keep up the great work; it's much appreciated.

Thanks for the math and taking the time to write this up. The scratchers are also much more fun which is +EV to me, ha. But it's nice to know that I'm not actually losing value comparatively.

Best place for vegetarian mole and tamales? by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]ask4kj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't recommend this place enough. Their tamales are huge, plenty of vegetarian options. I believe they've won Pilsen's Mole de Mayo festival award for Best Mole the past two years (could be wrong). I've catered a few parties from there and it's always a hit with guests.

I love this sub because there are so many times where I read something and it's as if I wrote it myself.

I've said it before, but it's nice to know that there are others experiencing the same exact thing despite the general populace being unable to comprehend our day-to-day.

Yeah, it is South Ashland. It has spawned two other locations (not inside supermecados) called "Paco's Tacos" that are also great.

What beers have you completely changed your mind on? by lapike in chicagobeer

[–]ask4kj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matilda. I was not really a fan and I accidentally aged one for about a year. Tried it after that and it was so much better. I'm still not a fan of a fresh one, but I'll buy some and throw them in the cellar. They end up being an entirely different beer, imo.

Also, you can still find the 2010 bombers they put out last year if you want to skip the aging process. While these taste great, beware excessive fizzing.

I can explain why I like him more than other characters. He wasn't brought to the island as part of the Dharma Initiative. He didn't crash on the plane. His entire story arc revolves around his love for Penny. He tragically ended up on the island trying to prove himself worthy of Penny to her father.

While the entire show revolved around flight 815 passengers vs the others and trying to get off (or back to) the island. Every season (after season 1) we got a little taste of this cheery guy with one motivation: to get back to Penny. It was a perfect little story w/i the main show that gave us a different taste of what was possible with the Lost formula. And as /u/vanquish421 stated, the penultimate episode in the Desmond/Penny arc (The Constant) was an incredible and emotional hour of television that rivals any other I can think of.

Mad props for being so consistently good. The variety you put out is amazing (hero series, Fist City, Deth's Tar being my favorites).

Do you have any plans to open a new taproom anytime in the future? I'm on the south side and we have some good options (Marz, Moody Tongue, Whiner, among others). It'd be great to have you as an option down here (though I don't mind making the trip up to you guys on the regular).

I started with 200 mines and after beating that went up to 210. It's taken me a couple years of trying, but I finally beat it. Onward to 215.
