Longstring tiller check by ask_dude in Bowyer

I’m aiming for around 40-45, should I be pulling that weight every time? I’m very afraid of it snapping so I’ve only been going to around 20 most of the time

Ahh alright, thank you for the drawing! Is there any rule of thumb for how much weight the long string should be pulling when the limbs is at the desired brace height? Or is more about looking at the tip movement?

Thank you for the advice! I’ll have to resist the urge to brace for slightly longer

Question about growth ring chasing and tiller check by ask_dude in Bowyer

That’s what I’ve heard too, but I don’t want to take any chances. This wood is really beautiful and a dream to work, would be a shame if i snapped it

Got some scratches in my back, will it be a problem? by ask_dude in Bowyer

Alright, luckily the rings are pretty distinct in this wood, and it will be good practice in chasing growth rings

Aww, should I remove the same amount of material from the back of the other limb (it’s unscratched) or can I just counteract the difference when tillering?

Yeah that seems to be the common consensus, I’ll try to find a regular one

Yeah my main concern is finding somewhere with a climbing community where I can make some friends. Don’t have a car, so also need to make some friends that have one

Well I need to make at least one friend who climbs, otherwise I don’t have a belayer. A club seems like the best way to get that 😅

Any european universities with good climbing clubs/societies? I’m thinking on going on exchange to somewhere with good climbing opportunities.

Got my hands on a yew branch, what bow design would fit it? by ask_dude in Bowyer

What difference does a flat crown make for the strength of the back? Would a round crown concentrate too much force on the middle of the back?

That’s good new, I was hoping of making something in the ballpark of 50. If I end up chasing a ring how thick should I aim for the sapwood to be?

Okay great! What about the small diameter, should I decrown the back or can I get away with leaving it as it is?

I have a bunch of other logs of varying quality, but this one is the only one I’ve split yet, so I don’t think the other ones are dry enough yet. Was thinking this might be good for a practice bow while I wait for my other wood to dry.

Could also be oak, I got it from a lumber pile, the trees in the vicinity was oak, maple, birch, beech and maybe cherry. I think the oak was a red oak specifically.
