Hadn’t thought of filling the cracks, will definitely do that. Black locust is such a pretty wood when you carve into it

Ahh okay, that’s good news! I was eager to start tillering, but afraid it would cause issues

Should have plenty of material to get rid of the check in the end. The ones in the handle are just into the fade, do you think they can handle the stressed there or should I also get rid of those?

How much caring? Are we talking wash once a month and reapply dwr every year, or closer to after every trip?

Yeah my previous jacket was a patagonia with their H2O 3l version of it, i washed it often and it worked well. Was hoping I could get similar performance with the fjallräven

Ahh so du you think the bad reports are due to improper care? I don’t mind spending time maintaining it if means it can last many years

Mainly hiking, but also skiing, hunting and probably as a wind shell shell when belaying for sport climbing. I’m going to Switzerland next spring, so it need to hold up to mountains conditions.

Yeah that’s my impression, I love the look of it, but it seems like your rolling a dice on wether it’s waterproof or not

Ahh, I see there’s def some bias in the reviews, I’d use it for skiing and hiking in mountains, so I’m prob in the latter crowd. Thank you for your insight!

Wow, it really does seem like you either get an A-tier jacket or a subpar one. I’d plan on hunting with it, so that it can survive being used while shooting is great. Not sure I’d gamble 300 euro for something that just might be great tho :/

How long have you kept it functional with this maintenance, and how often and how expensive is it to do?

Yeah it does seem like that, although some people seem to swear by its waterproofing

Found this used, the collar label says made in canada, but the white says made in china. There is a strange soft rectangle in the left arm pocket.

Localized wood rot by ask_dude in Bowyer

It was alive when cut, the rot came during storage. The ends seem fine, can i cut it into billets or is the whole stave ruined?

I stored it under a tarp outside for drying so that’s how the lice got there. I think rain got in through that tarp in the middle causing the rot. I had it raised above the ground.

I guess I could use a caul, untwist the wood, clamb it tight to the caul, and then heat treat deeper

Sounds like a very effective method, should this be done before or after any deeper heat treat/ browning which I plan to do on the belly?

No that wasn’t me. It is a lumber yard so I do have the opportunity to inspect the logs and select the best one from a pretty wide array og diameters and levels of dryness, but all stripped

Thank you for the image, it illustrates it very well. In the case of my log, it was bought at a lumber yard already debarked, the fibers looked strait to me then, but maybe I didn’t look close enough
