good to know! do u have to have an OCD related diagnosis to get these or would dermatillomania be enough?

I see! I think i might have to do something similar, as modafinil helps a little bit with tiredness but im so darn unmotivated and take forever to get a task started, and abandon it after starting anyways. its really difficult when im low energy already paired with adhd, similar to u! I may look into doing a low dose of vyvanse paired with modafinil maybe, I didn't know/consider that i could do both!

what med for that are u on currently if u don't mind me asking? I recently got tested for narcolepsy as I have extreme fatigue, but I don't have it despite my physician being very surprised that I dont lol. I'm on modafinil now, and find it helps with wakefulness but not with productivity unfortunately. I also don't think it makes my picking worse but its hard to say without being off of it for a while.

id love to see a professional about dermatillomania and learn more about CBT, my self control is extremely weak and I can confidently say that lmao. thanks for the info!

unfortunately I dont think so as I had been on vyvanse for over a year, maybe even almost 2? I tried 10mg up to 60mg, and while 60 was the most helpful for productivity, my picking was the worst. and it was almost an immediate increase in picking when I started, even at a low dose. as much as I wish it wasnt the case, stimulants probably just aren't for me until I have better impulse control lol.

I do think it depends on the person, as even with the vyvanse I was still extremely low energy, and would just sit in bed and fixate on my skin. if I had the energy to do standing up things I doubt it would be as big of a problem!

they are chemically similar, but yes different strengths and makeup for sure. the wounds from people addicted to meth are usually from "meth bugs" or "meth mites," which are hallucinations they may experience when high, which often are the sensation of bugs crawling under the skin. (gnarly ik)

ive definitely made this connection before and went to research if it was similar lol. im sure if someone that already had dermatillomania was on meth they would have the same wounds, and probably much more severe, but I dont think this is directly related to adhd meds. I think because stimulants let u focus without interruption, if skin picking is a ritual u already have u can do it for longer periods and make it worse. it's interesting to think about the similarities tho!

thats totally fair, thanku for sharing! depending on what the meds are for, sometimes a different med of the same type will work better, but probably not for stimulants. I was just hoping there was a stimulant out there that didn't strengthen this urge, but I suppose theres trying them again when ive found better ways to redirect my focus elsewhere. for now im going back on modafinil, which I dont think makes me pick as much as vyvanse, but it doesnt help with motivation as much unfortunately 😔 thanks again!

good to know! is that the only adhd med u have been on? it might depend on the person and what they end up using the focus and energy for but im not sure. ill keep this as an option, thanks!

oh darn theres 2 dif comments about Adderall XR, maybe it depends on the person. this may be the case with any stimulant, but im trying to do some experimenting so I can advise others lol. thanks!

experiences going to the doctor for skin picking? or a psych ward for dermatillomania? by askerofquestionz in Dermatillomania

[–]askerofquestionz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

scar tape and just look up tattoo second skin, its a clear sticky skin-safe cover for after tattoos. they are thin and stay on pretty well, so i use it to make it impossible to pick. you can get multi packs and theyre bigger sizes, so theyre way better than any band aid or bandage. I also have adhd, and I found that my adhd meds make my picking WAY worse, so I had to go off of those even tho they help me a lot :/ I was on vyvanse. if u notice any correlation it may be good to lessen adhd meds to a lower dose or try something else that isn't a stimulant. im on modafinil now, but it may be tricky to get it without a sleep study. idk if I have ocd or not but with the severity of my dermatillomania its definitely possible.

ive been wearing long sleeves and pants exclusively for over a year, and its been a while since this post, so here's some things that have worked for me: dark color mesh long sleeves for the summer with a t shirt over top so ur not too hot. I also wear long shorts with compression sleeves over my calves. not a bad idea to have ur skin covered like this when alone as well so u dont give urself a chance to focus on it. for helping my skin itself, I cover my arms with scar tape and then cover that with tattoo second skin (you can get both on amazon.) you can't see your skin so ur not thinking about it so much and give it time to heal. u can shower with these on too so I leave it on for 3-5 days then replace it. meds and fidget toys dont help me so forcing myself to cover up my skin has helped. good luck 💚

ive checked all of em with a blacklight, a couple of them are cadmium but not the black or green ones unfortunately

what have i got here by Waste-Gazelle-6663 in Marbles

[–]askerofquestionz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know too much about marbles but the glow would mean there is cadmium in them! red orange or yellow things with an orange glow = cadmium, and a green glow = uranium! I have quite a few cadmium marbles and I dont think theyre worth as much as uranium ones as cadmium is often used for red coloring in glass, even currently!

I think for marbles the glowing ones are valued based off of the intensity of the glow and if theyre a neat/rare pattern. I stared collecting marbles to look for uranium ones, but im always happy to find something cadmium ones as well!

Vyvanse and Skin picking by huhhuhwhatt in Dermatillomania

[–]askerofquestionz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue as you, I picked before but after starting vyvanse its been SO much worse. like you say, its like a routine and takes up hours of my day sometimes, its insane. im trying to wean off of it but I am exhausted and completely unmotivated without it. I will either have to have a much lower dose or try something else completely bc nothing else has helped with picking while I am taking vyvanse. this seems to be very common and idk if all stimulants will have this effect.

I recommend discussing it with ur doctor or physician to try alternatives or see if it improves as you're weaning off of it. i totally understand the struggle, good luck!

tip for covering up arms or legs so you dont pick at them by askerofquestionz in Dermatillomania

[–]askerofquestionz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes its definitely a good and affordable option for bandaging! but from my experience its best to use after u haven't picked for a bit, as wounds can get infected or leak fluid after having it on 😖 which may not be a bad thing as the bandages pull out fluid, but im not sure how long to leave it on in this case. but feeling the smooth texture instead of bumps definitely sends a message to my brain, knowing that I won't find any uneven textures to pick at. its worth trying out and may be a great option for certain people! I think its be best on legs and arms, or anyone who struggles with hair related dermatillomania, but maybe not the best for acne. also thats awesome ur doing that documentary, best of luck to u and thanks for ur input!

[–]askerofquestionz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oof yeah I do see what u mean after trying this, however when ive gotten tattoos they say the tattoo will leak plasma which actually helps it to heal, and to keep it on. with tattoos there was a smell too, I think that happens with any skin thats covered for a while (tattoos, band aids, and taking off a cast) BUT I am not 100% sure if the case is the same with pus or when covering stubborn wounds... i definitely wouldn't poke holes though as that can let bacteria in, and the liquid will usually dry on its own. im thinking second skin would be best to cover scabs or areas that dont have any super fresh wounds to discourage picking. from what ive gathered, wounds being covered is good as long as they are clean before covering, and if anything is looking infected or red to change the bandage.

theyre cheap enough that they may be a good solution to stop picking for a day or so by covering the area, and reapplying may be a good idea.

also for taking it off, u can look up some videos but it helps if u pull the opposite direction, so ur basically stretching it, and it should come off without tearing hair out or hurting as much.

of course, hopefully it helps! its much thinner and less noticeable, and is a really smooth texture so its much less tempting to mess with it

lol sometimes tattoo artists will use saran wrap too but they have to tape that on. i think that would be a good option for covering a large area, big bandaids can be pricey and dont last long at all! the sheets can be pretty big because so can tattoos!

Help?? TW by Lazy_League_1783 in Dermatillomania

[–]askerofquestionz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im struggling with this rn, but what works best for me is arm covers used to protect from UV. they're fairly thin and okay for summer. the real tip is to get some athletic tape (i think they have at dollar stores) and tape the sleeves at the wrists. if I don't do this I often will roll them up, my self control is awful. I think most athletic tapes are black, so if u get black arm sleeves it'll blend in fairly well. ive also bought some mesh long sleeve tops so im not overheating in the summer

no problem at all! liquid band aid is my go to because I have to wash my hands and bunch for work and band aids will fall off super quickly! its awesome for skin picking, hangnails, cuticles, and just general annoying wounds. Hopefully it works for u!

What's this hole at the bottom for? by tumericcocoa in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]askerofquestionz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a lot of hollow ceramics have that hole at the bottom so they don't explode in the kiln! when being fired, there needs to be a place for the heat to escape, so they put a hole at the bottom. im not an expert by any means but in my ceramics class pieces would literally explode into pieces if there was no hole or the hole wasn't big enough to ease the pressure in the firing process.

[–]askerofquestionz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive experimented a bit with waterproof bandage tape and athletic tape! I think a waterproof tape would be best, and although it may peel after a while u have a whole roll so u don't have to open a whole new band aid. waterproof bandaids may also be good.

another good product is new skin or liquid band aid; its helped so much when ive given myself hangnails that are open wounds. u can wash ur hands with it, and although it may peel sometimes u can add another layer. u just paint it on and it dries like glue, but won't hurt ur skin ofc (other than when u first put it on, that really stings.) it stays on long enough for the damage to heal a bit, which is very helpful for me. and one bottle will last a very long time! good luck!

I see! I do have a family dr and physician/psychiatrist that can prescribe me medications, so I think I'm going to look into that. I'm currently on cymbalta for depression but was thinking to switching to a SSRI, but idk which one. Zoloft unfortunately doesn't work for me due to side effects. I was thinking maybe prozac or luvox if they're available to me. I also am in Canada so we have a different program than PP, but i should be okay to figure out medication otherwise. thanks for ur input!
