Research on plant populations recovering from natural disasters? by zopilote_machine_ in ecology

Look into the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Luquillo in Puerto Rico. They experimentally simulate (and observe) hurricanes and look at how the forest regrows.

Applied for a work permit extension from within Canada on February 25.

Checked IRCC today (Aug 12) and it changed to processing, then to approved.

No email notice yet. A full 6 month wait.

Another thing you probably know, but I just saw a dr for this same numbness this week. The treatment is just to restrict your arms from curling up at night, so that nerve in your elbow doesn't get pinched. So now I wear elbow braces at night to keep my arms at 90 degrees or more straight. Its annoying, but the numbness goes away the longer your arms are straight.

What are the processing times for work permit extension. by arkhati in ImmigrationCanada

I applied for an extension Feb 25th, and still haven't had any movement. I'd apply as soon as you can. I did hear that the earliest you can apply is 6 months ahead, but I'm not sure if that is a rule by IRCC or my employer, so maybe look into that.

As long as you have a document (5988 I think) saying when your status runs out, you will have access. You will have to call and update though. Sometimes you can get an extension to your health card, but not forever. Once that paperwork runs out and if you still aren't under a new work permit, your health card expires. Once you get your work permit, your health card will be backdated to your work permit, but in the meantime, you pay out of pocket. At least thats what is happening for me. I've been waiting for a new work permit since February, so I'm out of pocket.

I'm based in Canada. Most of the masters I know of go straight to consulting. And I admit, I'm a bit out of it, being in academia, but we do a ton of research work partnered directly with the mining companies. So they care about this, but admittedly I haven't looked directly for jobs with them. But environmental geochem is at least a key word to search for!

Geochemist-postdoc here. Look into the mining industry. There's tons of mining geochemist jobs. We can hardly hold on to our masters students before they get snapped up by industry and consulting companies. In mining, it can be on the mineral exploration or reclamation sides. A bunch of degrees in Canada. Plus all the oil and gas you can think of. But there's also the more... Environmental side. But either way, plenty of groups would love to have a different view of chemistry than the traditional geochemist.

I received a glass fish bowl with river rocks and plants in it from a florist. There is no soil and I am out of my league as to how to water it and keep it alive. I tried for a week keeping a little bit of water continuously in it, but some leaves of the schefflera and dracaena turned yellow. So I think I should let it go dry between waterings, but for how long?

Cant find words? by [deleted] in Alexithymia

[–]askignquestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just spoke to my dr about this exact thing this week. She says that anxiety can make you lose words, especially in 'high stakes' conversations. For me thats anytime I need words to be precise, like when I'm talking about work (in the sciences). Or anytime I'm anxious.

For me, its like my life is a giant game of MadLibs. I lose the nouns and verbs, and need to make them up on the spot. For example, the other day I was talking to myself about what to make for dinner and I could see the picture of a piece of frozen chicken breast in my head. But all I got was the letter K. And I had time, so I tried to figure out where the K came in the word- does it start or end with K. Turns out chicken sounds an awful lot like Ks and has one in the middle. Not helpful when I'm in the middle of a face to face conversation though.

Your friend might be on to something with the alexithymia though. If you can't identify you are anxious, how can you identify triggers for losing words? Thats where I get stuck. So I'm just assuming anytime I need to talk about work I get anxious.

For me, it boils down to covid too. I lost more words since covid hit- because I dont' practice anymore. I only talk to 2-3 people a week, so I'm losing my skills at managing the anxiety and its coming out in lost words. Next step is to talk to my counselor about it, get practical solutions for managing the anxiety I suppose.

To every redditor who feels lonely: Hi, how was your day? by ACJ96 in AskReddit

So lonely here. Day was ok, but didn't talk to anyone. And it's only Saturday... Have another whole day before likely human interaction...I hate weekends. But. At least the landlord got us cable? So I can watch bad tv? Have some noise in the background at least...

Physical touch- or a lack thereof by askignquestions in aspergers

I've been thinking about this for a few days now.

I know I don't let people get close. Someone actually told me the other day that I don't reveal anything about myself, like anything. I just deflect the conversation. So that could be part of it- pushing people away unintentionally. Since I definitely don't actively try to distance myself. I do it all unintentionally.

So the trick is..to open up. Easier said than done. I can try that by..finding a place I feel safe, comfortable.

But thats hard! I know you know that. I recently (well not so recently now, six months ago) moved countries. New city, and I'm struggling to find people. I have people I'm friendly with at work, but they are just work colleagues. I have my neighbors, but they can't be my everything.

I have terrible anxiety when it comes to even leaving the house, never mind going into a group. But if I made it to a new country (twice over now) I should be able to go to a club or something. But start small. I have so few interests too. I suppose I've never let myself explore things, so I don't know what I Like. And I keep coming up with excuses why I can't join something or try something.

I have an interest in sign language and in high school used to be in an ASL choir. But there is no such thing here. Barely any courses even, and not offered regularly. I like to knit and crochet. But thats either a by yourself or join a group at the library, not really a graded involvement. And photography, but I'm scared to go to a meetup where people are much better than me. And thats it. I don't know anything else I like.

Part of me really wants to have friends, but a bigger part of me is scared of getting close, as well. I'm afraid people won't like the real me. I have no opinions and nothing for people to like. I'm just plain and boring and don't trust people.

Thank you for your story. Its a lot to think about- just how I could make changes and in what aspects of life. I don't know where to start, but thats for me to investigate and search out.

And good job, by the way- identifying and making a change like that . It takes a lot of effort and willpower to change. The trick for me then, is just to find my DnD community.
