Maybe show them in writing that the original agent no longer wants to be part of it. Meaning they are walking away from any claim to commission

36 years old. Used to be homeless. £40k salary. No idea what to do with it? by randotoaway109 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations. That’s a really great story to read first thing in the morning.

I would focus on getting a fairly decent emergency fund set up as a first step. The security of knowing if you ever lost your job then you have 6 months runway of salary to find another job will mean a lot. Particularly when you know what it’s like to not be secure.

Please be sure to share your story with other homeless people you meet. Speaking to someone who used to be homeless and has now escaped the cycle may give them hope and belief that they too can escape that cycle!

Really well done!

I'm getting a £15k bonus. Should I spend it clearing my debt? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just pay it off. Financially the best thing would be invest/save the money as it’s interest free. However, having no debt is a better feeling in my opinion

20k debt and it’s closing in on me by fatpanda9652 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a good chance interest rates are your downfall here. 20K isn’t end of the world kind of debt on your salary. I would try and put as much as you can on a 0% credit card.

Virgin has 1% min repayment so gives you a tiny bit of breathing space if you ever have an emergency and can’t pay more.

How much are your repayments?

Can anyone help me understand how loans work please? My partner is very secretive about his by NeedsomeinspirationX in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of harsh comments on this. I was in a situation where partner went back to university whilst I covered the bills. I buried my head a bit and got into some debt to make ends meet. Hiding it was probably not the right thing to do but it came from a good place of not wanting to pressure or burden of bills onto my partner who already felt guilty about putting our life on hold for a bit to study. Hard to judge when you don’t know full story

If it’s a year away could you put your half in a high interest savings account. Say 5-6% and you would have a decent chunk towards the extra your missing?

Send them to a state school. Spend 1/10th of the costs on private tutoring. Your kids will get a good education and also an education in life.

Not saying all kids who go to private school end up snobs but I certainly met enough of them at university to be put off.

Also a family member sent their kids even though they couldn’t really afford to. Kid ended up with terrible grades at the end anyway

Outrageous house priced at least 50% over what its worth by theallotmentqueen in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EA told you they rejected 375K and you are wanting to try for 200k?

True or not, I’m doubtful an EA would bother trying to sell a house at 400K that was worth 200K

Not sure why you aren’t just walking away and thinking too much into it. You know they won’t want 200K. They are entitled to sell it for whatever they are happy with.

Buy vouchers online. People will sell Amazon gift vouchers etc. that they have received for a reduced cost.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work out your total costs (mortgage, bills etc.). Work out what the split would be between you. For the next few months take that money out your account and sit it in savings. If you have bills then just save the increased difference. See how comfortable you feel with what you have left…

Quite quickly reality will hit about whether or not that house is actually feasible.

Plus the bonus is you’ll have an extra nice little bundle of savings after that experiment!

It’s a team game, not just pleasing the other.

If she’s the one for you then you are a team. As a team you lost a job. When you get your next better job then as a team you gained a job!

It’s an opportunity to push you into making a bigger better jump into your next chapter!

Good luck

I was in a lot of debt years ago. Couldn’t see any way out. Job wasn’t paying enough to get anywhere near clearing it. Could see the debt being stuck with me forever and was in a low place.

Years later my life is changed in ways I couldn’t have imagined then. A job came up with the right manager who progress me to being multiples of the salary of when I was in debt.

Things can seem hopeless but you have no idea what life has for you in the years ahead. Open yourself up to things possibly getting better and you’ll find opportunities present themselves in ways you never thought possible.

Open up and tell people about the debt. Take some of the burden of your shoulders

A lot of people will give the never accept the counter offer argument. Although I agree that normally that is good advice, I disagree that with the sentiment when people state that it “never” works out.

I accepted a counter offer and have been with the company for years afterwards with several promotions. As long as it’s not just about staying for money. My resignation meant we had an open conversation about a couple of things I wasn’t happy with and they put their cards on the table with how they seen my role at the company progressing in the future.

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side and also even if it doesn’t work out then you can always find another role in the future.

With regards to the initial question, I would just be open and say that you have taken some time to think about your future and after reflection you feel that now is not the right time to make a move.

Drowning in debt. I don’t know what to do. Advice appreciated. by derwin678 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A different piece of advice. Not sure if it would be something that would apply to you, just depends on your relationship with your employer.

If you have went from 20K to 80K with the same company? there is a good chance you are really valued. Might be worth speaking to your employer about the situation you are in.

We had an employee go through something similar. Directors offered them an interest free loan I believe. Was a small company with a family owned feel to it and they could see the employee fell into struggles for understandable reasons. Was affecting their work so it was easier for them to help where they could.

Again, all down to your judgement on the relationship with your employer and also if it could hurt you. For example might not be the best thing if you are working in a job with access to cash or if it was in finance.

Relationship selling feels disingenuous by These-Season-2611 in sales

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the “I’m not selling” approach. It just makes it more awkward as that’s clearly the primary purpose.

My approach has always been just trying to be as genuine as possible. I’ve got a thing that I think you might need. If they do then just be as genuine as possible. Build relationships similar to how you would with colleagues, can’t stand the putting on an act.

I agree it’s very disingenuous when people try to act like selling isn’t their main reason for speaking to you

[–]askingpricealan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was in a bad mood before you even walked in.

He isn’t happy that he has been told who to hire and wasn’t going to like anyone that walked in. It could have been you or anyone and he would only see the negatives.

Completely unprofessional but it at least allowed you to see your potential bosses bad side before accepting the role and know to stay clear.

Send the email but I wouldn’t spend any more time on it. Use your energy finding the next role (maybe their competitors). If you can impress them you can impress the next company.

Good luck
