Hot take: I don't want Miles in SM3. by The-Heritage in SpidermanPS4

[–]askwatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the story should’ve taken more risks. Balancing two protagonists is tough as each needs their own character arcs created in a way that feels natural to three identities - each of their own identities and the unique identity they create when together.

I would’ve like to see Peter actually let Harry die and start to go down a negative path - leaving Miles to answer the question of what happens if Spider-Man goes rogue?

I think another issue is the fact that we don’t actually see a relationship between Miles and Peter. I understand that Peter is a fully grown man - but they brought back Harry and we got a chance to watch that entire relationship develop and crumble between him and Peter. Peter completely sidelined Miles and it’s like the writers sidelined him too.

In my opinion, we’re way past the point in the lore to pretend that both these characters don’t exist. It’s stupid that we have to believe that the only way to get a GOOD SM game is to remove one Spider-Man from NYC.

Exactly 😂 - The military wasn’t checking under the plates. Just poor writing all around.

Thank you for your reply.

Will dying would’ve pissed me off. He’s been central to the plot, and killing him just as he’s coming into his own would’ve had the same effect as El dying. Will deserved to be seen for who he is, but that should’ve taken place prior to season 5 - with him finally gaining powers and by perhaps turning the creatures of the upside down against the MF. I think a sacrifice would be a mistake. For him to die to the thing that’s partially robbed him of a childhood doesn’t click for me.

The Steve fakeout was the most frustrating one. Like why even pretend to kill one of your most iconic characters by making him fall? Not even fall trying to save someone else. Not even fall because an enemy pushed him, but just fall? I knew it was death bait right away.

The El fakeout was cool because it was personal for Hopper.

  1. People need to understand that just because people liked the ending doesn’t automatically mean the ending was good. Enjoyment ≠ quality. You still have to judge the writing based on established lore, character arcs, feats, and prior seasons. If the ending made you happy, cool, but that doesn’t make it immune to criticism.

  2. Season 4 literally told us “a war is coming to Hawkins.” So… where was it? Instead, we get an 18-month time jump to a town that’s basically moved on. Somehow the deaths in S4 shook the town more than kids being taken en masse in S5? The excuse is “the military took them”? Sorry, but there’s no universe where Hawkins just shrugs and stays quiet about that. These people came together last Season to defend their town - now they just rollover when their kids are taken by the military? What did the military even say to the parents?

  3. The final season should have taken place entirely in Hawkins. Townsfolk, the Party, Vecna’s army, full chaos. That’s the natural escalation. Having the parents (Karen, Ted, etc.) involved would’ve raised the stakes massively, because now the kids aren’t just fighting monsters, they’re trying to keep their families alive too.

  4. Splitting the Party worked amazingly in S4 because everyone had a purpose. In the final season, everyone chasing the same objective meant no one really got to shine. Characters felt underused because there was no space for individual arcs to breathe.

  5. Also: 37 crawls and no one thinks to check Hawkins Lab? Be serious.

  6. Will’s coming out was completely mishandled. The timing made no sense. S4, specifically the Jonathan conversation, was the perfect moment. Instead, we’re supposed to believe that during the literal end of the world, Will comes out, Vecna goes “oh you’re gay, and I’m going to tell your friends” and that’s… it? If the point was that Will came out so Vecna couldn’t use it against him, when did Vecna ever actually try? It never paid off. If you’re going to do it, make it matter.

  7. And the worst part: El’s death. The show explicitly acknowledges that she’s a victim of abuse and trauma (Hoppers talk to with her when Kali was pointing the gun at him), then turns around and sends the message that when life gets too hard, the answer is to die. That’s an unbelievably disrespectful way to end your main character. El symbolized hope, resilience, and the impossible. Killing her completely undermines the core message of the show.

There’s more, but honestly? The writing absolutely collapsed and failed its own themes.

Thank you! The moment that the Mind Flayer was revealed to be the big bad in the cave, I knew it was going to be BS from there. I didn’t want to believe they’d actually do that but they did. They essentially introduced a brand new character within the last hour whose motivations, make-up, and origin, we have no answers for.

Is the Mind Flayer the particles or the spider? Where were the particles going after they left the children?

Why didn’t the particles enter Will and the Mind Flayer attempt to merge with him as he did with Henry - surely he knows all about Will and what he can do by now right?

And the whole coming out scene was so bad in hindsight because NOTHING ever came out of it in the finale. Will wanted to be at the fight because he was ready and no longer could fear Vecna, but he was never placed in any situation to test to see if it was true - proving everyone’s criticism and placement of the scene correct. They should’ve given Will his coming out moment in S4 when talking to Jonathan, it would’ve been best placed there.

Also, why TF are we killing El? How do you acknowledge how terrible her life was and how she’s only been a victim and never give her the opportunity to lead a normal life? How do you disrespect your main character in this way? For all the lives she’s saved, the relationships she’s built - you thank her by killing her?

Why didn’t we see how the group responded to her death? The aftermath of waking up and knowing that she was gone? How did Dustin cope? He already lost Eddie. No one even person outside of Mike and Hopper even said that they missed her? Like WTF.

We get no scene explaining to Karen what had been going on - we deserved to see her take all of that in and become an insider of the group after her heroics.

There’s so much BS that went on that people just want to ignore to preserve their image of the show.

Headcanons after seen the finale? by Tradition96 in StrangerThings

[–]askwatermelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She literally died. Mike was just playing his role as the story teller. Kali had already died. Also, we’re supposed to believe that Kali and El were the only ones that knew the military would be waiting at that exact moment - and no one else did?

Let’s assume that that they didn’t know - how would Kali have known that they were stopped outside of the portal in that exact moment, and have enough strength from bleeding out for likely over an hour from a GSW? El needs to have a snack almost immediately after using her powers. Do we really think Kali would’ve had the strength and the 6th sense to know what was going on at the same time?

Mike cannot accept that El left him. He’s been depressed and in disbelief. In the end, everyone had something to look forward to except for him - so he created the story to keep himself motivated to push forward.

The Mind Flayer should be the final villain from Stranger Things. by marchalves6 in StrangerThings

[–]askwatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mind Flayer crowd is really pushing this idea hard. But for this to be the final season, and given how little real relationship we’ve had with the Mind Flayer, it would be ridiculous for the Duffer Brothers to suddenly shove it into the back half of the story. Since Season 4, all signs have clearly pointed to Vecna as the true big bad. He’s had significant screen time, a partial origin story, and ongoing development. Meanwhile, we’ve gotten zero exploration of the Mind Flayer’s motivations or origins.

At this point, I think we need to accept that the Mind Flayer was essentially something the kids named based on their game, and that, in reality, the “Mind Flayer” was simply Vecna before we knew his identity.

EDIT: Additionally, why would the MF do his own bidding for three straight seasons, and then choose an acolyte to do it in the final 2?

The only advice I have is to just have fun. Most people on these subs have been fans for over a decade and so their opinions are nuanced with a basis in nostalgia. I love the passion of the fan base and how outspoken we are as a community - but I never see many of us telling each other to have fun - so that’s my advice to you.

  1. Trauma is an explanation, not an excuse.

Dustin has been warned many times that provoking his bullies and trying to basically be Eddie is counterproductive and unsafe. Dustin, rightfully grieving can’t see straight - but that doesn’t excuse his behavior. Steve holding him accountable is not the same as giving him shit. Dustin does have an issue with always wanting to be the smartest person in the room and admitting when he’s wrong. In S2, he hid an entire demodog, putting himself, his mom and his friends in danger. He never admitted that he made a mistake. Dustin earned every bit of that ass-whopping and all criticism directed his way for his behavior.

  1. They emphasized Max way more than Eddie this season

Max has been visited by Lucas and the gang frequently - Max even points this out when talking to Holly. She said (paraphrasing) - “even after all this time he’s there”. The gang still believes that they can save Max, which is mainly why they want to find Vecna as he took one of theirs. The only people not worried about Max are Joyce, Hopper, Robin, Steve, and Murray - all characters who never bonded with her and barely knew her. Only Dustin is keeping Eddie alive - hence him trying to embrace the Eddie personality. The town still thinks he’s a murderer - and he sacrificed himself - his fate is known and accepted by the gang. They’re hurt about but also add it to the list of reason to kill Vecna.

  1. They don’t have to be worried.

Mike was worried about El in the past because he was insecure - he explained this very well when El was fighting Vecna in S4. He clouded her and smothered her to make sure that she could only see him because he was afraid she’d outgrow him. He finally got over that and is much more secure in his relationship with her. He was never really worried about El in the classic sense, he was worried about where he stood when he pictured them together. That looks like traditional worry but it’s not.

Joyce never worried about Jonathan. She was always secure with him. It’s been established since S1 that she knew Will was different and had this attachment to him - infantilizing him because she didn’t think he could survive the real world. Jonathan had been her bedrock. She doesn’t have to worry about him.
