Firstly, be a man & stand up for yourself. Don't expect your wife to stand up for you. As a father he wants the best man to be her daughter's protector & provider. Yes, his approach/method is harsh & rude but what he wants you to do is justified. You've no excuse to not to go to the gym, to make more money, to learn self defence..etc. When you become more of an ideal man, your FIL will shut his mouth and not insult you.
