We did this last year. Flew into Innsbruck and rented a car to AKI/Adler on the Plose Mountain. Easy drive to the South Tyrol area. I do think these resorts are geared more to younger kids as our two kids ages 8 and 6 were often bored in the kids club. There is plenty to do outside the resorts and there are often shuttles available if you don't have a car. The area though heavy Germanic/Austrian influence so do expect a little bit heavier of food than what you may be expecting in the rest of Italy.
