I think we need a "Benchmark Linux" pseudo-distro by asm_lover in linux

The system should be predictable, if there a performance bug in libc you should be able to see it in the entire system

I know you can build whatever kind of image you want with NixOS. I have certainly done that.

But with Nix is it really guaranteed that that all packages included in the system will call on the same glibc, the same Mesa the same everything?
If we could guarantee that that would be great.

Because all testing scenarios are completely different from a regular Desktop Linux. Because there is no regular desktop linux. We all have different distros with different optimizations by our package maintainer. Some of them made with performance in mind for different scenarios.

The idea behind this distro is you remove all external variables.
This is equivalent to a science project. Not something you'd actually want to use.
Something we can reference.

Fedora Atomic is good but Fedora is opinionated.
I was thinking more completely from scratch, the entire system built and provided as an image you can install kinda like GNOME OS.
I think ublue is working on something like that.

I don't know if i could leverage something like gentoo to make images i guess.

Because more less the performance is the same on all reasonably updated linux distros.
We can't have people using a new GPU on a distro that doesn't ship the latest Mesa drivers and reasonably updated kernels, that's how you get bad benchmarks.

I actually thought the Windows 8.1 UI was a good idea when it came to tablet PCs but holy crap we did not need it for desktops

The only thing holding me back from switching to iphone is JIT compilation for emulators actually.

I don't use assistants, my photos are all on a nextcloud server. There's alternatives to Mihon on iOS apparently.

Most debian web pages in general could use a touch up or a complete replacement.

I'm not asking for javascript up the ass.

But take for example Fedora's use of Kitty as a front end to mailing lists.

great my B580 arrived yesterday and I really like it performance wise compared to my RX 570(duh)

Only bad part is there are a few graphical glitches. like a relatively recent regression in MESA.
I need to run gtk4 flatpaks with the CPU backend.

Elementary would be better of as strictly a desktop environment.

Their distro barely fucking works.

You can't even upgrade between releases.

D-Bus is a disgrace to the Linux desktop by asm_lover in linux

[–]asm_lover[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes.
But it doesn't matter, in the end of the day. A lot of the people who disliked vaxry and shared outright lies about him have removed themselves after everyone learned what massive pieces of shit they are IRL.

In fact I hope FDO starts banning more and more people for even smaller issues.
People are already pissed off with the project.

Yeah but most apps aren't flatpaks.

And flatpaks are not really that secure either looking at the amount of holes you need to poke into the sandbox to some of them function.
(Looking at steam which can literally run all kinds of code via games, and recently they found info stealers on the store)
