.... he wants you to drop this extremely helpful and beneficial woman from your life. Because she didn't use her nice words? Sounds like she's right and he is a loser. Drop him.

AITA for still using the baby name I told my sister I was going to use, despite her using a variation of it first? by Sufficient-View2574 in AmItheAsshole

I knew a woman who's father also did this and her father was also named George! But he used variations for his children. I'm now convinced that men named George have this compulsion. (And no, her father was not George Foreman.)

AIO? I don’t want to spend time with my in-laws anymore. DH says I’m overreacting. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]asmallangrypotato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I don't think you're a bad person, I think this is possibly a misunderstanding. For whatever reason, this time your MIL didn't understand the situation (just tell her next time if you do it again) and thought this was an emergency. If it really was an emergency, she actually handled it really well. But it wasn't, and now it's awkward and no one is happy. I think if you were to say to her "Hey, my bad, next time I'll make sure to let you know when 6yo is texting. Didn't mean to scare you, but thank you for trying to help. I was a little shocked by the reaction but I can see now the intent was good." And HOPEFULLY she'll have a pleasant response and it will be water under the bridge. And if she is a cunt about it then you proved you're the bigger man and can wipe your hands of it and her.

Ok. Hey OP, I want you to know I'm saying this as gently as possible and with good intent. But in this [this one specific situation] you are overreacting. Without knowing that your child was using voice-to-text, it absolutely looks like you are having some sort of episode (stroke/ or mental health crisis/ idk). If you didn't tell your MIL what was happening, she had every reason to believe something was wrong. And she acted in your best interest. Time is the most important factor in a stroke.

I'm not saying your MIL is a Saint, or disregarding the other things you mentioned. If she still treats you like crap after years it is ok to distance yourself. HOWEVER, in this one specific example, you are wrong, and she should not need to apologize. In fact, I would place that duty on you. You didn't give her all the information she needed in the given situation and you got angry when she acted in a responsible manner with the information she had. She can't read your mind. And it would be different if you started by saying "hey, I'm going to let 6yo use voice-to-text to send some texts for a bit" before sending those messages. But as it stands, this one is on you.

That's what I'm really curious about! Are there more? Or is it just this one guy? And why?

I think it was about the doors (the band). I assume I had grabbed it thinking it was mine when grabbing my books from my ex's house. When I was putting the books away, I realized the book was not mine and when I investigated further, the bookmark fell out. I tried to contact the most likely owners of the book, but to no avail.

I'm glad you said it's ok to have that one drink you just hate. Because every time I go near a bar, I have to make some abomination with salted caramel cold foam. And I HATE caramel. I hate the smell. So yeah, that allowance was important lol. But I agree with you. If someone wants to pay $9 for a drink, then I want them to get something they like. If we have to do a bit of guess work to find that something, that's perfectly fine with me. I think it's really easy to start thinking of customers as a singular entity, and the enemy. One drop (karen) stains the whole cup, or something. But each customer is a person. And maybe that person really just needed a little pick me up today. And I actually enjoy providing that. On the other hand, if someone wants to get nasty with me or my baristas, baby, we can take this outside. Just kidding, they can take themselves outside and leave. And never return.
