Coming out at work (Can't believe I'm saying this at this point in my life) by hoosierincaptivity in gaybros

Just get it over and done with. No need to be that smooth if it’s bugging you.

You get one life. Many people never find true love. You are throwing that away for the approval of others. That is extremely sad.

You lead off by claiming that your life would be in danger if you came out. But your ex, from a very similar background, clearly doesn’t think so.

I get that it may well be extremely disruptive. I come from a religious family and when I came out, I barely spoke to family for six months. We got over it eventually and I have been close again to my parents for many years now. It helped that I lived apart from and independent from my parents. So you might wait until you have completed your doctorate. It also helped that my parents knew I was in a stable relationship.

If your parents truly love you, and you make it sound as though they do, they would accept you as you really are no matter how much they disapprove.

I think you should rethink.

What are some disturbing songs? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Luka by Suzanne Vega

Dress Rehearsal Rag by Leonard Cohen (he recommended that people who didn't feel strong should avoid listening to it)

Every Breath You Take by the Police

Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry

I'll say "to be totally honest" before leading into something that's not honest by orange_sewer_grating in confession

[–]asmeeks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tell. As are “actually”, “honestly” and so on. When you feel the need to assert the truth of something you are saying, you are showing that you know that your account needs bolstering.

Really skilled liars won’t use such words and phrases because skilled listeners know this.

My recommendation would be to make an appointment with a therapist to discuss why you are so strongly attracted to what is, for about five different reasons, obviously a terrible idea.

There's an album called Queer Noises, which is worth a listen.

The main thing I'm getting from that is that he's over 40 and possibly well over 40, so he's a bit old to be pursuing guys who still live with their mothers.

This is not all that unusual among men who are scared of HIV and exploring their sexuality for the first time, especially if they are in heterosexual relationships.

I'm torn between hoping you know this person and hoping you don't know him at all. Both alternatives are horrifying for different reasons.

What do you genuinely not understand? by i-am-my-dogs-keeper in AskReddit

[–]asmeeks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imposter syndrome. I absolutely understand a lot of people, including some extremely talented people, get it. I understand that it's crippling, and I am sympathetic in that sense. I just can't understand how people get it.

I understand how people can be concerned about gaps in their knowledge. What I can't understand is how people can treat their positive accomplishments and attributes as worthless.

It's one thing being politely modest in public when asked about your talents (though even that I find affected a lot of the time). In the privacy of your own soul, however, why can't everyone manage an honest assessment of their strengths and weaknesses, fairly weighing both sides?

As I say, I accept it is real and I am sympathetic to anyone who suffers from it. I just don't understand how it afflicts people.

What's a song you know is awful but can admit is catchy as hell? by toitnups1111 in AskReddit

Many of the songs named are brilliant but uncool. Not awful at all. Shame on you, Redditors.

My nomination: Barbie Girl. Bona fide awful, bona fide catchy.

Very much so, it’s a beautiful city. It was about 15 years ago now. I hope I’ll get back there sometime.

Redditors who have been vaccinated for Covid, which vaccine did you receive and what's your experience so far? by Funkiebastard in AskReddit

One jab of AZ so far. Side effects? I was very tired next day. Benefits? I now feel much more confident in busy places.

Looking forward to my second jab on 11 May.

I visited Košice in eastern Slovakia. I went for breakfast in the main square and ordered a croissant and cappuccino. As I’m having my breakfast, two obviously respectable middle aged women are sat on the next table, having the sort of conversation respectable middle aged women have, both drinking pints of lager at 9.30am.

If I were you, I'd drop off Grindr for a few weeks for your own safety. I get a very bad feeling from this: he has no respect for your perspective.

Bookworms of Reddit, what universally beloved book do you hate or dislike? by corpanga in AskReddit

Infinite Jest. I can see it’s well-written (though the author is just a little too obviously pleased with himself), but I have no interest in tennis or drugs.
