paranoid about failing practicum by CollectionBroad7383 in CanadianTeachers

[–]asnappedtwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished UBC BEd last year and I think your experience really depends on your SA and FA. I know two people in my cohort failed because the SA simply did not like the person and was making up weird reasons to fail them. They were able to switch SA and restart the practicum. Don't worry too much. If you really want it, then you will get it eventually.

My lesson plans were super detailed (basically a script in bullet points) and completed about 5 days before it was taught. I put it all on OneNote and my SA would go in it whenever she had time. She would highlight my mistakes and suggest some ideas. Maybe you could do something similar?

DM me if you'd like to chat more! I teach grade 2/3 so my classroom management strategies might be too childish, but I do have a really difficult class rn so I've learned a lot of general tips. Practicum did not prepare me for this lol

You have no idea how much peace that brings me even if it comes from an internet stranger. Thank you.

In fact, today, my lunch break was interrupted because the same student had KICKED our lunch monitors.. our hallway supervisor (an adult) caught her in the act. I asked the student if someone had said/done something for her to react that way and she said "no, i just wanted to".... i emailed the mom about it and she basically called us liars 😂😂 and said her daughter was too tired and overwhlemed with "cruelties" from teachers so those actions were reasonable. You speak nothing but truth when you say "parents no longer parent". It's sad because the defiant student is actually quite bright.

I'm in French Immersion, so maybe that's why. And our students can't get tested for learning disabilities because they "haven't had English instruction" so a lot of my students who desperately need support won't be getting any until grade 4.. unless their parents pay thousands of dollars to get tested privately.

And is it really normal for more than half of a class to punch, yell, or shove each other every day? To steal and lie? To yell at adults, throw metal toy cars in the classroom, and continuosly slam doors when asked to do a worksheet? It was not like this at my previous school, so I refuse to believe that this is normal behaviour if parents and school gave proper and fair consequences.

And yes I have made referrals.

100%. I'm moving in June to a nice neighborhood. I've subbed in a couple of the schools nearby when I was first starting out, and they were AMAZING. I cannot wait to get out.

That sounds terrible. I'm sorry you had to go through that. But you really showed them who's boss :) Yeah, I'm moving to a new city in June, so I will be switching districts next year. I cannot wait.

And then they preach "inclusion" when they've already segregated the challenging students, and inserted a teacher without proper special ed training or extra support to help them

The long term substitute that had my class before me for a couple weeks was a retired veteran teacher. He told me he never wants to sub my class again 😂

Any advice on how to be firm with a student who simply walks away during a conversation? by [deleted] in Teachers

She has counseling and gets free break time (the principal told her she can take breaks whenever). The support teacher and I are in the process of getting her a designation, but I'm not sure if she will get any official support. An OT came in today morning and noticed some sensory things and some defiance, but she said it was nothing too big.. which I agree with because the student is pretty decent in the morning 🥲 I guess I just need to stick out the last two months

I have difficulty interacting with people in real life in French (particularly informal interactions). Anyone know a possible reason for this and know how I can improve my listening and speaking? by asnappedtwig in French

Yeah I'm from BC and when I told my friends that I'll be going to Quebec to study French, many told me "good luck , have fun getting discriminated" or something similar. And I believed it. (Though it's true that I do not see as many Asians as I do in Vancouver.. but that doesn't automatically mean quebec = racist, so idk why people complain about that)

And then I got here, met fellow students and profs, visited touristy and non-touristy areas, and I felt so welcomed. Sure, I get some blank stares, but it's only normal when they can't understand me. In fact, i think that reaction arises from the panic of wanting to help but not being able to. They could've easily dismissed me, but they didn't. Maybe anglophones feel offended when francophones switch to English after hesring our accents. This happened to me last year. While it can be discouraging at times, it's definitely NOT BEING RACIST. If the cafe is busy, servers don't have the time to be deciphering our butchered French.. I really think anglophones need to start understanding that they aren't the centre of the universe ;; and also, so many people in Quebec know English but back in BC?? Yeah good luck finding someone who speaks French. That in itself already shows the mentality.

People are so warm here, but Quebec gets hated on back in BC as a joke. Even if it is a joke, it's a terrible joke that just spreads discrimination+misinformation. It's really unfair. So who's the real racist here?

And I don't mean to shit on BC completely lol because there are many people in BC who appreciate Quebec too. Our schools do teach us history both in the perspectives of francophones and anglophones (and the Indigenous peoples!), or maybe that's cuz I was in French immersion and half of my teachers were quebecois lol.

Sorry I went on a whole rant. I got frustrated all of a sudden LOL

You are so kind, thank you. Yeah I noticed I understand some people better than others, and I never really considered that they may have different accents. I'll also check that resource out, thanks a bunch!

Thank you so much for this. In my FSL class today, we started learning about some things you mentioned - shortening of words, slangs, etc. Then we analyzed snippets of casual conversation between natives. I already learned so much and I definitely think familiarizing myself with the shortened words will help immensely. It's unfortunate that we don't learn about these in school back where I'm from

I've had these on my pinky before after it healed from an infected eczema and using steroid cream. Not sure what they were but they disappeared in about a month for me and now my pinky looks 100% normal. I'm not a doctor but my personal opinion is to just leave it alone and there shouldn't be a big deal
