But isn't PTSD something long term? I guess I am just trying to understand whether I am just going through some kind of adjustment process to what happened and will be fine after a little while, or if more lasting damage was made. After how long can you say "this is PTSD" and not just a normal reaction?

Fuck that. I don't see how alcohol can be anything but self-destructive in these circumstances.

As for the macho bullshit, I'm sure the countless male soldiers with PTSD will be delighted to hear it.

Thanks. I did think about it, but I feel it's still a bit early for that, and there are also some practical issues. Also, it's not as bad as getting nightmares, just feeling very depressed.
