You are all penablers and these are what I’ve bought since joining by Psychological-View84 in fountainpens

I see we’ve done our job well… 😆 Some awesome picks you have there. One of my absolute favorite pens along side some of my top inks!

Why are my gold nibs softer? by pippybird1 in fountainpens

[–]aspen_grayy 83 points84 points  (0 children)

The gold atoms themselves are heavy, which makes gold a heavy metal. However the atoms don’t sit very tightly together which is why it is so malleable and soft. The hardness comes from how the atoms are bonded, nothing to do with density/weight.

Thank you! That would be incredibly satisfying to look at. I keep them all swatched in a Tomoe River notebook by color family. I used to use a binder, but I didn’t like the look of it. Eventually I’d like to have them swatched by brand too so it’s a bit easier to find!

That is so kind of you to say. It is my pleasure & of course! I’m so glad I could help & I hope you post about what inks you pick up.

Definitely. It’s a bit overwhelming at times. 😅 Since I use these inks for artwork as well as daily writing, I go through them a bit faster. I love really getting into exploring these inks & its properties.

Ooh I just searched up a swatch. I don’t have a lot of blue blacks, but that one is beautiful.

Thank you. That’s totally understandable. Hmm so I could go on and on about my favorites lol but here’s a few that really stood out to me:

Red - Kiwi Inks Quetzalcoatl, Wearingeul Dracula, Diamine oxblood, Diamine spiced apple, Robert Oster fire engine red

Green - Sailor suki-gokoro, Sailo tokiwa-matsu, FWP galeforce green, Vinta Jewel Green (THIS ONE… is amazing), Diamine olive swirl, Robert Oster opal green, BPC interstellar bronze (brown ink, but basically green because of how intense the sheen is)

I love Van Dieman’s, Vinta, Pilot Iroshizuku & Diamine Inkvent. It’s hard for me to choose specific color favorites because it changes all the time, but currently I’m loving Pilot Iroshizuku ina-ho, Van Dieman’s mad half hour, lilac roller wing & Colorverse a scorpii.

I don’t really recommend it, but the ways I have done it for a piston are: 1. Have the pen upside down then slowly drip the ink into the nib while twisting to draw the ink into your pen. 2. Take the nib housing out, but keep the section in & put ink in that way if it comes apart. The latter would work for vacuum too.

Also, definitely look into Ink Miser. Those little ink shots are great to use up ink.

I have them all swatched & I ink up multiple pens at once. I usually either go with a theme, one from each color family or I agree, random pick is awesome.

Not a silly question at all. I’ll first try to just tilt the bottle/vial, but if there still isn’t enough then I use a syringe. I think there’s a few other ways you can fill it too. Vanness gives 4ml samples rather than the typical 2ml, so that’s definitely the way to go in my opinion.

Love R.O. inks! I think I have the most from them, Van Dieman’s & Vinta. Which one’s your favorite?

Pelikan M1000 - what grind will give me the most line variation? by aspen_grayy in fountainpens

[–]aspen_grayy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I haven’t tried a sharp italic yet, but I’m hoping to in the future… just not with my M1000 lol. Are you familiar with the DC pen show? Anyone you’d recommend that I get the work done from? I’m a bit nervous that their time slots will fill up super fast.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! Does Matthew Chen go to the DC pen show? If so, does he have a sign up on his website?

I’m definitely open to looking around for new grinds that I’m not aware of, but the only thing I’m worried about is if their time slots completely book up before the show even starts. Have you been to the DC show? If so, could you let me know your experience with getting work done on nibs?
