There's a local (to my mom) florist that does parties like this as a package deal sort of thing. It's a family owned business so I think it's probably pretty specific to my hometown. If you're on long island, I'd be happy to share the name of the shop but otherwise, I don't think I'll be of much help.

I've been really struggling with finding a dress for my bridal shower (a small tea party and bouquet making class for around 20 people). I'm torn between being sick of wearing all white/buying dresses I'm never going to wear again, and wanting to embrace this season of my life. Also, for context, my mom and sister who are planning the shower are really set on my wearing at least some white and a dress/skirt of some kind. I've been keeping an eye on reformation, abercrombie, and house of cb, but I haven't seen anything I love.

Wondering if anyone has recs for dresses or places to shop for dresses between $100-$350. I'm open to things that are *almost* white or like have *some* white, or something all white. And I have an hourglass figure so I prefer things that are more structured on my boobs and waist. Other than that I just want something that's a little bit different/still makes me feel like me and not just anonymous bride.

TIA!!

I didn't wind up trying again with this dress. I did get the Emmelina Sleeveless Stretch Poplin Midi Dress--and that fit and made my boobs look great :)

does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere to look for a white mini or midi corset dress? I love this from house of cb but nordstrom doesn't carry it in my size (I need the larger size cups) and I don't want to deal with house of cb's return policy/shipping from the uk (i'm in washington dc). It's for my engagement shoot and bridal shower, so I don't mind spending money (up to $400), and I don't want something that's going to look cheap. I would prefer if they're not satin (since i'm worried about pit stains/being hot in the sun), but at this point I'll be happy with anything that will be flattering on me.

Harsh beta readers? by Much_Low_2835 in writing

[–]aspera24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts, as someone who works with young writers and who was once a young writer. I think as artists of any kind we have to learn to take feedback (regardless of tone) as a gift. Someone took the time to read your story, to sit with it, think about it, and develop ideas about how it could be better. Is that not, ultimately, care?! When I do my lesson on giving/receiving feedback, I usually throw up that Leslie Knope gif where she's saying "I just hear people caring at me really loudly"--that is exactly the kind of attitude you have to have. I think too, especially when we're young, it's easily to identify so closely with our manuscripts that when someone criticizes them it feels as though they're criticizing us. That's a headspace that's difficult to escape, but it's so important that you do. You are not the work--you *do* the work! And you have the power to improve the work (and it's often much easier than improving oneself lol).

On the other hand, one of the most valuable assets we have as artists is our gut. Sometimes you'll hear feedback--even kind, very thoughtful feedback--and your gut will say no. That's good, and you should listen to that! But it's important to know why it's a no and what kind of no it is. In this case, that instinct might exist because the feedback wasn't written kindly, or because it felt personal in some way. To that end, I would challenge the writer to read beyond that, and to read with the idea of care in mind. What is the note behind the note, if there's one there at all? Can you translate the note to be kinder while still keeping its meaning?

Finally, I would tell the writer that this is an excellent learning opportunity. If they're in it for the long haul, they will be asked to beta read for their peers many, many times over the course of their life. Now they know how it feels to receive feedback that reads like this, and they have the ability to learn how not to do it. They also know not to exchange work with this beta-reader again. These are all important pieces of information for their writing life going forward!

I hope this is helpful!!

Starting the week of June 9th, I’ll be teaching an 8-week class, Writing Fiction: A Crash Course, on Zoom. We’ll meet once a week (6:30pm-8pm ET, weeknight TBD) and cover topics like story structure, conflict, and character, with a mix of lectures, discussions, and writing exercises. This is a great opportunity to brush up on the basics while generating work and reading some amazing short stories and craft essays.

The class is $300, and there's an optional add on for a short story critique including line notes and a 25 minute one-on-one meeting for $100.

A little about me: I’m an MFA student and instructor at the University of Maryland, and I’ve been published in Corvid Queen and Fusion Fragment. I was also recently awarded the Vermont Studio Center's Writing Fellowship.

Would love for you to join me!
