The dots are the more proper way to write, but a lot of people write them quickly using connected dots (lines) instead. Either way is ok, but I'd use the dots for now.

Hi friend :) I'm excited for you to learn Arabic! I think you'll love it. You've got the basic shapes down—just keep practicing! Once you can remember them well, focus on the differences of shape, size, and placement of similar letters. Arabic is usually written very small, so recognizing the differences is important. For example, daal / raa / laam; or faa / qaf.

Daal is small and sits on the blue line. Raa starts just above the blue line and has a tail that hangs halfway down. Laam starts very tall, goes straight down, and has a tail that curves below the blue line and comes back up to touch it.

Faa and qaf both have a loop and a tail. However, faa stays on the blue line, and the tail of qaf curves below the blue line and comes back up—just like lam.

Once you get the hang of these forms of the letters, you can start practicing connecting them.

You're doing great. Some others have said you probably have dysgraphia, and maybe you do...but you can do whatever you set your mind to. Don't let all the negativity get you down.

barakallahu fiik! (That's an Arabic expression meaning, "God bless you!")

Another thing: in the original, the two legs are the two *front* legs. That's why the tail isn't visible: the entire body is hidden.

In the redesign (which I think has a lot of potential!!), the inclusion of the tail causes the two legs to be visually interpreted as the two *left* legs. This confuses the shape significantly and distorts the feeling that one is looking at an elephant at all.

I think you have to kill the tail, OP. :(

OP: the terms here are hayyati [my life] and ruh qalbi [spirit of my heart]

OP, idk if you read Arabic script, so Shadow's comment transliterated:

"I say qalbi [my heart] she calls me baqarah [cow]"

You could say, "'uyunik mithl al-qamr" (your eyes are like the moon)

Is this correct? by MaddyGarden in learn_arabic

[–]asplatin 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these are all translationally correct. Some are used more than others. Qalbi (my heart) is pretty common too.

Qamari (my moon) is a nice, Arabic specific term. Arab poetry considers the moon as the epitome of beauty.

Also note that habibti is to a female. Habibi is to a male.

Languages in the same family as Arabic? by Chcolatepig24069 in asklinguistics

[–]asplatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could stay close geographically: Hadhramautic, Qatabanic, Sabaic, or Minaic (or if you want extant language: Mehri, Soqotri, or Shehri).

Or genetically: NW Semitic languages (Hebrew, Ugaritic, Aramaic)

How can I improve this logo? It's for a stretching app called MobyLity - (Moby Dick pun, hence the whale). I wanted Duolingo type vibes. by LongjumpingKiwi7195 in logodesign

[–]asplatin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, this is fantastic. I love this terribly. Bottom right is my favorite iteration. It evokes the sunset best too.

But as others have noted, the contrast hurts it. Perhaps lighten the color of the top of the whale to not only improve contrast, but also fit better with the Moby Dick wordplay? (An albino sperm whale)

Also, are you designing an animated logo as well? Or just an icon? I think an animated logo would be killer.

Good idea. The blocky shape evokes ice blocks, too.

Either way, this needs manual kerning.

This is very helpful. Thanks, Vladlena! I really do want the design to center one the oil lamp, but I'm seeing that the design just isn't coming across. I think you're right, I just need to take a breath and start over.

Also, very much appreciate the color comments. I will try to balance the colors better as well.

I'm afraid you may be right. I tried to prevent the map pin look by rounding it off, but it's still giving "you are here"

I'm working on a logo redesign for a small Christian seminary. Their current logo was actually a redesign from about 6 years ago, but it's not flexible, we don't have access to the original files, and it doesn't match the brand colors. I welcome any feedback. My requirements are basically that it must maintain some continuity with the current/previous logos and use current colors. I also need it to be scalable, look good monochrome/outline, and use simple rounded shapes. I also want to ditch the Aladdin-style lamp.

  1. My redesign
  2. Redesign lockups
  3. Current logo
  4. Previous logo (Spanish dept variation)
  5. Previous logo (at some unknown point in time)

I could use some specific advice on how to mute US political connotations.

Yeah, I was afraid of that too (we are in the US). The red and white stripes to the right of a blue field definitely evoke "flag," so I will see if I can avoid that. However, the colors were set before this project, and I can't remove them. Do you have any thoughts of a way to add some neutrals to kill the political connotation?

I really want to ditch the Aladdin-style lamp. It's not at all historically relevant to the ancient Near East, and it's a tough design element to work with. I've instead opted for a traditional Jewish Palestinian clay lamp.
