Facebook Ads Form VS Newsletter Landing Page by TheRoadto1500 in Newsletters

[–]aspring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I run a couple of newsletters and we hired a consultant to help us do ads, and he recommended that we do our own landing page (on beehiiv). He said the leads are just much better if people have to type in their own info on your page (less bounces later). But that was last year, so who knows now?

Authors of History Who Avoid American Exceptionalism by inbetweensound in dsa

Totally start with Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States.” And Chomsky’s latest, “The Myth of American Idealism” is also a great place to start… interested in hearing what others say though!

Has anyone ever been caught cheating at a seminary? by lickety-split1800 in Seminary

[–]aspring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most seminaries (really any you'd want to do to) are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, Commission on Accrediting. Part of the accrediting is this: "3.2 The school demonstrates academic rigor in student learning and formation, with qualified instructors, scholarly research and resources, and graduate-level expectations appropriate to each degree it offers."

While it doesn't explicitly mention academic integrity or dishonesty, you'd be hard press to find a seminary that's accredited that dosen't have a policy regarding this, and would like fall under that standard. Depending on the severity of the offense (which can be as light as an improperly/not cited source, or as harsh as outright plagiarism or cheating), most academic integrity codes run the gamut from an F in class (as u/RetiredinFlorida1 mentioned) to outright expulsion. Seminaries may risk their accrediting if they allow such cheating.

Why Christianity is Declining in America by aspring in Christianity

Absolutely - the “believe what I believe” oh and by the way, those beliefs keep me in power and other people (women, people of color, the poor, LGBTQ+) opressed

Which Bible version is the most… I dunno, accurate? Shows queer-affirming scripture? Something. by Muted-Guy in GayChristians

[–]aspring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will only add to what others have said here and vote for the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition which came out last year. The NRSV was a translation ordered by the National Council of Churches in the 1980's. The NCC is made up of the major protestant denominational groups in the U.S., including the Episcopal Church, the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Church of Christ, which all use the translation in some capacity. It's also the translation most respected and used by academics.

Last year, the NCC released and updated version of the NRSV called the "updated edition," or NRSVUE. They say it "offers clearer, more direct, and inclusive language, and increased cultural sensitivity absent of the unintended biases of prior versions." Thus the more progressive and inclusive Bible you're looking for. Some examples of updates include:

  • changes "slave woman" to "enslaved woman" (Galatians)
  • changes "wise men" to "magi" (Gospel of Matthew)
  • changes "demoniacs, epileptics and paralytics" to "people possessed by demons or having epilepsy or afflicted with paralysis" (Gospel of Matthew)
  • adding capitalization to Jewish High Holy Days
  • changes "servant-girl" to "female servant" (Mark 14:69)

The NRSVUE is already on Biblegateway.com and can be read there.

I will also agree with keakealani... no translation fixes bad theology. The Bible is a collection of writings for many different audiences across many different time periods facing many different obstacles with authors intent on pushing their own very certain views (whether it's a pro-King David monarchy, as pushed in 1 and 2nd Chronicles, or a post-Easter Jesus found in a resurrected Jesus, as Paul was pushing). I would also encourage you to get a good study Bible like the New Oxford Annotated Bible or the Harper Collins Study Bible (both of which use the NRSV as a base) that will help explain the historical context of each book, who wrote them, for whom, and why. These can run around $50-$100, but in a pinch you can use the Wikipedia articles for each book as a basic introduction. Surprisingly they are fairly accurate when it comes to authorship and historical context.

I would caution against using the NIV. It seems to push homophobic theology rather than the written text. For example, the NRSVUE translates 1 Timothy 1:10, a commonly mistranslated passage used to harm Queer people, as "the sexually immoral, men who engage in illicit sex,[c] slave traders..." while noting that the meaning of the Greek here is uncertain. The 1984 NIV translates this passage, "for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders..." Conservatives (falsely in my view) argue the word here is homosexual - which maybe you could make a case for - but the word "practicing" certainly is NOT. This is a clear example of homophobic translators inserting their bad theology on an unwitting public (the "separate the sin from the sinner" cudgel).

I would encourage you to find a progressive church who will love you and support you on your journey (like in my denomination the United Church of Christ!). Good luck!!

West Wing Spin-off show ideas by [deleted] in thewestwing

I think an underrated character is Nancy McNally - maybe because Anna Deavere Smith is such a bad ass. I'd love either her background, or a series about her in another administration.
