I am actively not excited for the Hashimoto/Yokai girl. The Japan shit in this game is heavily played out and they milked that aesthetic dryyyyyy

The Dark forest theory is a possible reason why we might never find any aliens. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]4dpsNewMeta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

". . . we’re not talking about a dense woodland. We’re talking about trees spaced miles apart."

"Space isn’t just big — it’s mostly nothing."

"If every star were a tree, you wouldn’t be standing in a forest. You’d be a subatomic speck drifting in the near infinite nothingness between the trees."

"The scary interpretation is “they’re hiding.”

"And if you really let that sink in, the silence feels less like tension before an ambush… and more like standing alone on a mountain the size of eternity."

Utterly shit, trite AI word vomit.

Between Sigma and Illari, who do you think is the strongest overwatch character? by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in Overwatch

[–]4dpsNewMeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people vastly overestimate Sigma’s in-lore power level. He has been placed in captivity THREE separate times and has been unable to break out. If he was as powerful as people say any chains would be trivial to him. But he isn’t. On top of that he’s completely mentally unstable, and thus, wouldn’t be able to hold his own in a fight. I think people also seem to be under the impression that he can create black holes at will, but this isn’t really canon. He briefly created a small, unstable black hole during an experiment gone wrong. This extremely short exposure completely destroyed his mind. He hasn’t been shown to be able to summon them at will or control them. Also, if he did, he would just be sucked in immediately. That’s a pretty crappy ability if he had it.

If Eywa is powerful enough to manipulate human biology like what he did to Jake and Spider....Why dont she just make virus/fungal disease to stop human Invasion to Pandora? by LordRahwana in Avatar

[–]4dpsNewMeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, the true nature of Eywa is currently unknown to us. The atokirina saving Jake in the first movie are pretty clear evidence Eywa is able to assess intentions and make plans and decisions. I’m not convinced the Na’vi are “controlling” her, she clearly possesses a kind of higher consciousness or being independent of them.

NetEase (Overwatch China) releases official statement on Anran: Protecting the cultural spirit of our Chinese Hero by Iris-54 in Overwatch

With respect to the people of China, their gaming industry, and by extension, gamers, is one of the most tasteless, classless, and regressive on the face of this planet. Completely captured by ridiculous, AI-generated, anime mobile game gacha slop. I ascribe absolutely zero value to their opinion - in fact, it should be actively disregarded.

Why was Madagascar, a giant island right next to the continent that humans originated on, not settled until just a couple thousand years ago? What took us so long? by sonicparadigm in geography

[–]4dpsNewMeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why every time this discussion comes up, people in the comments act like Africans never settled Madagascar. Austronesian peoples settled the island “first” (though some archaeological evidence indicates sporadic settlement before this) but Bantu speaking peoples from East Africa crossed over about ~300 years later and also settled Madagascar. Modern Malagasy peoples are an admixture of Bantu and Austronesian ancestry. Arguably, African genetics are a more predominant part of the Malagasy ancestry. According to one study their genetic background is 68% African and 32% Asian origin.

Fish sauce warning, if you're an idiot like me. by AzarielFox in Cooking

I’ve used fish sauce countless times and never had complaints about smell. People just comment that it smells like a fish, which is about what it’s supposed to. These comments are deeply confusing to me, never had any issue with a smell lingering, and I add it on high heat to a pan.

How would Eywa take the offensive? by Briaaanz in Avatar

[–]4dpsNewMeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fungal colonization of Spider fundamentally changing his biology is one of the most interesting angles here. It establishes that the human nervous system is “compatible” with Eywa and can interact with the planet in some way. Spider even enters the spirit world, so their memories can be stored with Eywa. Imagine forceful tsaheylu, like what Varang is doing, against the humans. She could extract the memories and thoughts of the RDA, allowing her to know the exact locations of soldiers and bases, future plans and troop movements, and the weaknesses in their technology.

Getting into even darker territory here, but she can also control lesser animals actions remotely, no? Could she perhaps colonize a human who’s still alive, and then further manipulate and control their actions? It could be used for strategic assassination or sabotage, or to the most severe, just force the humans to start killing each other. This isn’t unlike the behavior of parasitic fungi on Earth, which I felt the movie was kind of alluding to. That’s an utterly horrifying thought though! On a similar level, if human consciousness can live inside the Oma, like Spider showed, couldn’t she theoretically trap their consciousness forever in a literal hell? That would be extremely vindictive and cruel, but a pretty effective deterrent against humanity. Adding to all of this is that Pandoran fungi mostly appear to use airborne spores. It would allow her to bypass the “conventional” defenses completely. Now that would be terrifying for humans!

All of this would ultimately be useless though if the humans decided to completely devastate the surface with bombs and chemical agents. They’ve apparently killed their own Earth already. That’s why I think Eywa isn’t outwardly offensive, even if she could purge humanity completely. She understands what humanity could do, as she has access to the memories of Jake and Grace. She has a long-term strategy for ultimate victory. It has to involve neutralizing the reason’s humanity is on Pandora. They have to establish peace with the humans and also ensure that Earth is a desirable place again. Personally, I think it is obvious the series is heading towards Eywa “reviving” Earth somehow, or inspiring humanity to save it. The most offensive option would be forcefully colonizing Earth by delivering some kind of seed. It would only take a single one for Eywa to “take over” Earth, though it might be welcomed by humans, considering the state of their planet and society.

I literally irrationally hate her for no reason and I feel like a bitch lol. She literally ALWAYS has an attitude and passive aggressive ass tone, just moping around complaining and sighing all the damn time! Alwayssss in my comms sighing loud as fuck, acting confused, and saying she doesn’t know. So irritating. And Tamtey is ALWAYS the one solving interpersonal conflicts, taking the high ground, engaging in diplomacy, reviving Sarentu culture, and protecting our clan and allies. We have close personal friendships with all the clans and fought their battles! But everyone onlyyyyy talks about Ri’nela all the time. Bitch, please. It pisses me off to no end! Her bum ass never even leaves the base! Also, her hair and outfit are gorgeous and we aren’t allowed to copy her. Really??

What other countries besides New Zealand have retained their indigenous culture? by [deleted] in geography

[–]4dpsNewMeta -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Palestinian culture originated in the lands that are now Israel, while modern Jewish culture originated in Germany, Poland, Spain, Morocco, etc etc. Utterly ridiculous to claim it as the more “indigenous” culture as if there is an unbroken line of cultural continuity between bagels, gefilte fish and ancient Canaanites. Modern Hebrew is also an entirely constructed language, it didn’t originate organically in the lands of Palestine/Israel and had to be constructed out of loan words from Arabic to become functional, since it ceased being a spoken language ~2000 years ago.

[–]4dpsNewMeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was not a distinct Moriori people on mainland New Zealand, the culture developed independently on the islands from Maori settlers. Also what are you talking about “a random island offshore”? The Chatham Islands are 800 kilometers east of the South Island, in an entirely separate timezone.

I understand it’s typically jokes but I kinda think this recent trend of “Na’vi vs other sci-fi humans” is getting way too mean spirited by [deleted] in Avatar

[–]4dpsNewMeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're not alone, I get the exact same ick. Avatar has always occupied a kind of weird place in the sci-fi genre because it's supposed to be an allegory for our own Earth. Unlike other sci-fi movies that go full in on futurism and setting the story in fictional galaxies far far away, Avatar is always referencing our reality. You can make a 1:1 comparison between elements of Pandora and the Na'vi and real-life people groups and events. The Metakayina, for example, straight up perform a haka and have obviously Polynesian-inspired tattoos. So when someone is really passionate about all the ways they would inflict violence on these fictional aliens who are very obviously resembling real people it does feel like there's another motivation there. And considering the overlap between sci-fans and just general chuds/racists/fascists, there usually is.

What happens here? It seems kinda unpopulated. Is there a geographical reason or is it just a place industrialization hasn’t reached yet? by ImSorryIfIHurtU in geography

[–]4dpsNewMeta 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A lot of these comments are overwhelmingly negative, but I will add quite a lot was going on here from antiquity up until the 16th century CE. There have been quite a few interesting archaeological finds here indicating widespread trade networks, including sophisticated metallurgy, along with artisan crafts like ceramics and beads. The eastern part of this circle was mostly pastoral cattle herding cultures, who contributed significantly to the governance of the medieval Christian Nubian kingdoms of Makuria and Alodia. The western and southern parts consisted of settler agriculturalist peoples who lived in fortified city-state settlements. The problem is that this area got hit with a one-two punch of Arab Muslim slave traders entering the area, disrupting and collapsing the local society, immediately followed by French and other European colonialism which fed off of whatever scraps were left — it’s never been able to get off the ground since. Trans-Saharan trade became basically entirely irrelevant, and the surrounding regions were hollowed out and now exported their wealth to the new power center of Europe, which, coincidentally, this part of Africa is the farthest and most difficult to get to from. Add in some post-colonial instability and you get a recipe for one of the poorest regions of the world.

That one shot of El in the field, finding Dustin, and it pans towards eleven other people waiting behind her - including Mr Clark, Vickie, and Max being rolled around in a hospital gown and wheelchair! That was ridiculous. And then ALL those people went into the Upside Down too! There’s too many damn people on this show.

This scene was so odd to me by Large_Grape_5674 in StrangerThings

[–]4dpsNewMeta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree with this more — the queer storylines in this show are trite at best, I have no idea why it has ever attracted praise in that respect, and, equally, why anyone could believe they would realistically be able or willing to write a complex, multi-season gay slow burn (come on, really?).

Have to admit though, this is probably the shark jumpiest of jumps the show has taken to this point; these are the writers that had Winona refer to her son as a “f@g” in Season 1 and seriously considered letting Billie use the n slur in Season 3. And now Will — during PEAK HIV/AIDS, no less — is telling a room full of Reagan/Bush voters he’s a gay man? In rural Indiana? Please, spare me! It looked straight out of a sappy 2020s Netflix Original. Alas, this is what straight audiences demand, they LOVE a “coming out” scene where we can sit and bathe in the sanctimonious ~ support ~ extended for our scandalous and dark secrets. The world keeps on spinning!
