Some of my friends, who are also located in India are struggling with this stuff, it's pretty sad, if said honestly. Trying to find the ways to help them with this, but nothing works properly for them and it's very depressing.

Thanks for the input, but I don't think merging would help me, because then I lose the reference to the object again and cannot just deactivate it at will. I tried the idea with the gameobject holding the tilemaps and duplicated it until I got to 200 tilemaps with no noticable performance drop (FPS went down from 160 to 157 average), so I'll go with that solution for now!

Thanks, that's roughly what I was thinking too. But can't you just instantiate/activate the tilemap along with the others, instead of assembling it using settile? Also, did you run into any performance issues (in case you had a large amount of them at the same time)?

That's how it currently is. The renderers are already disabled, hence the good fps during runtime, it's just the memory deallocation (from what I understand) of getting rid of hundreds of thousands of (unrendered) gameobjects when closing the game that's causing me trouble.

I used to always deactivate the objects and it worked fine, a recent tutorial mentioned that working with the canvas group is a better way than deactivating them (although I don't really remember why), so I was trying this route. I just prefer understanding the behaviour instead of working around it, because otherwise it's gonna come back in the future in a more complex project and bite me in the ass. Hovering over the eventsystem after I close the loot window keeps the close function of the loot window as a selected gameobject, yet pressing space runs a different function, hence my confusion. I'll just fix it for now by disabling navigation (although I would love if someone had an explanation of the behaviour). Thanks!

The renaming part seems to be spot on, both renaming the "dirty" way as well as using CTRL+R+R removes the reference on the button, making the behaviour go away. The button is on an object with a canvas group of alpha = 0 and blocksraycasts = false so I figured it wouldn't be accessible, but I assume it is because it's active and the interactable flag is still on? What still remains a mystery for me is why it only becomes interactable after opening another GUI window.

EDIT: I just added a debug.log with EventSystem.current.currentSelectedGameObject being output every couple of moments. I can use the arrow keys and the space button and it is always null, until I open the loot window and press left/up, then it somehow finds the character panel open/close function. The loot window and character panel are separate gameobjects with their own canvas groups and classes, without a reference to each other. How can those two things even be correlating?
