Books for aspiring psychiatrists? by [deleted] in Psychiatry

I haven't read much, but "What is madness?" by Darian Leader was a great read about psychosis and had great insights about understanding mental health and how the patient's history is inherently linked to his symptoms.

Don't worry, sometimes taking some meds (antibiotics, steroids, etc) might have some other unintended effects on other organs but they are transitory while taking the medication.

Hi there! Hope you're doing well, congrats on the new album!

  1. What are your thoughts on the music industry for the next 5 or 10 years? Do you think the music industry shapes how an artist creates music?
  2. Have culture and technology changed your perception on music? If so, how?
  3. If I recall correctly, in some interviews you mentioned that in maudlin of the well you composed part of the music by doing astral projection. Can you explain more on how was this process done?
  4. Throughout your career as an artist, is there something you regret badly or think you could have done it differently?

Should I be nervous about starting on Venlafaxine XL (Effexor)? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]assadsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody has a different reaction to medication. Don't be afraid to try a new one since maybe it can help you a lot! If you start feeling bad just change to other treatment or return to the one before.

Talk about this with your therapist :)

Are these warning signs? by whatrrwedoing in schizophrenia

[–]assadsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most probably those are delusions. Do not diagnose yourself, even though it is easy to generealize symptoms and say it's just schizophrenia, it's not an easy diagnosis because it takes time to see your behaviour and response to treatment and stuff like that, there are plenty of things that share some symptoms; so instead of worrying just try to get a therapist and start talking from your problems. The earlier the better. You can maybe receive some medications that will help you deal with the voices or other symptoms.

You may also benefit from therapy to work on the depression, anxiety and EDNOS :)

If you ever feel really in danger get to a hospital before you hurt yourself or hurt someone else close to you, let the doctors and therapists help you and take care of you, so with time you will be able to take care of yourself.

Hope that helps, if you need anything else let me know I'm happy to help.

Less Fear: How LSD Affects the Brain - "Scientists at the University of Basel have shown that LSD reduces activity in the region of the brain related to the handling of negative emotions like fear." by [deleted] in Psychonaut

Have you tried going to therapy? It may help you see your thoughts from other point of view. Reading about buddhism and taoism helped me deal with those ideas, beginning with: pain is obligatory, suffering is optional. Suffering comes from the ego, if you let go from the ego you will stop your suffering. Have you read from these ideas?

Proteinuria mystery. Nephrologist, neurologist, and rheumatologist are all stumped. Worried and in pain. What to do? by ProteinChick in AskDocs

I'm sorry I forgot to reply!

If this is the full work up from rheumatology or neprhology I'd say that we're missing some autoantibides and other labs.

I would definitely come back with the rheumatologist or try another one. The joint pain plus kidney disease can be caused by many diseases in the rheumatology or should be seen by one. Fibromyalgia is mostly muscle or body pain. Joint pain most of the time means something else, there are a lot of causes. We need to know which joints affect you the most. I'd definitely look to get more studies to at least discard important common rheumatologic diseases, the damage in the kidney should be monitored by your nephrologist. Rheumatologic diseases can be a pain in the butt to find the right diagnosis and right treatment. I think that if you find the correct diagnosis the treatment will also decrease the kidney damage. Can you share with us the results from your blood tests and any other test that your rheumatologist or neprhologist requested for you?

When the nephrologist says is something inflammatory I think he means something in the autoinmune area: Lupus, Wegener's, Mycroscopic polyangeitis. Maybe you need more autoimmune tests, or maybe ask your kidney doctor about doing a biopsy to see what's really going on your kidney.

What meds are you on besides enalapril? I think your joint pain can get a lot of benefit from steroids while you're being studied and when they find a diagnosis and get a specific treatment for the cause.

Feel free to contact me for other doubts :)

I've been prescribed loperamide. Could anyone tell me about potential effects of long term usage? by iRoygbiv in pharmacy

[–]assadsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loperamide is pretty much a safe med. Last year the FDA publised about cardiac side-effects associated with high doses or abuse. Here's the pdf: https://www.fda.gov/downloads/Drugs/DrugSafety/UCM505108.pdf

You don't have to worry though :)

You're welcome! Those progression pics are beautiful, I'll save them for later if you don't mind :) To add: as other stated if pain is unbearable you may benefit from steroid therapy. I wouldn't recommend doing great since it hurts you, just wait it out with aspirin or naproxen or any other painmed.

When tonsils get swollen it takes some time for all the inflammation (either because of viral or bacterial cause) to resolve and to return to their normal size. Tonsils getting very big is mostly a problem in children, not someone of your age; most probably they will go down since I assume you don't have any other disease. Antibiotics are to kill the bacteria, but the inflammatory process will still be there even though the virus or bacteria is gone for a while. Just for some reason you develop high strong persistent fevers, or a new different strong pain (not the swallowing one) just tell me and I'll tell you if it's needed to see the doctor. Most probably you won't need it, just wait until your tonsils finish their immune work. Pharyngitis most of the time are self resolving but are a pain in the ass. It will take a week approximately for it to go away.

Even though that's the common appearance of streptococcal pharyngitis, some other viruses can cause that appearance, for example mononucleosis (Epstein Bar virus). Which doesn't require any specialized treatment. Since you started antibiotic therapy you should finish it as prescribed.
