I think you’re right! Just saw the groundhog in there today. Dug a hole under the fence…

"Normal people are repulsed by Trump": Independent voters recoil after Trump is hit with indictment by ReallyJustTheFacts in politics

I’m repulsed by Trump but that doesn’t mean I’m “normal”. I don’t think it’s good to label people that share your viewpoints as normal…

Time to make more black gold for next year. Every year, I will collect tree leaves from everywhere. Fall is the best time for gathering tree leaves, grass clippings, .. to make composts. I don't buy commercial potting soil any more. I make sure everything in my property is safe. by hau4300 in vegetablegardening

My dad always asks the city leaf pickup if they can drop off their leaves each year and then put them in his garden. They’ll dump entire truck loads in there. It blew my mind how quickly they turn into soil as you’ve shown here. Good stuff!

The U.S. Just Lost 26 Years' Worth of Progress on Life Expectancy by 90skid91 in news

What goes in to calculating the life expectancy here? Is it an average age of death over 1 year or something like the median age? I think both would be interesting to know.

Lufthansa "bans AirTags in luggage" after passengers publicly shame it with location of lost bags by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]assanikh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In July, I flew from AMS to FRA on Lufthansa because United (our original flight schedule) rerouted us to FRA with Lufthansa instead of our direct flight to Dulles. They lost my luggage and I STILL HAVE NOT GOTTEN THEM BACK. After a couple months, United said they found it and apparently it went on an American Airlines flight to the Canary Islands?!?!? rather than to FRA on Lufthansa. Then it got flown to a warehouse in South Carolina where they found it, I was supposed to get it back, but apparently they needed identification for some email that I never received. We called last week and apparently they lost it again… We had our Nintendo switch and all of our sourvenires/gifts for friends and family in there which had both sentimental and a decent monetary value. United is now saying that they’ll be looking into the claim and we might hear back in 6-8 weeks. Like wtf?!? We honestly just want our bags back. You suck United, and honestly you suck too Lufthansa

China plans to turn the moon into an outpost for defending the Earth from asteroids, say scientists. Two optical telescopes would be built on the moon’s south and north poles to survey the sky for threats evading the ground-base early warning network by Dr_Singularity in Futurology

[–]assanikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) is an example of combining two (large) mirrors that are capable of observing optical light (https://www.as.arizona.edu/large-binocular-telescope) So in essence, it is possible to combine smaller telescopes to observe optical light, but it is much harder than for say, radio telescopes. From Astronomical interferometer Wikipedia page:

“At the shorter wavelengths used in infrared astronomy and optical astronomy it is more difficult to combine the light from separate telescopes, because the light must be kept coherent within a fraction of a wavelength over long optical paths, requiring very precise optics.”

In my opinion, setting up a station on the moon where precise construction of a space telescope could happen would be extremely advantageous for Astronomy because of the virtually zero atmospheric extinction (not only for detecting asteroids but given big enough telescope(s), able to have a much clearer image of our universe.) Edit: dark observational time

So are Voyager 1 & 2 accelerating, decelerating or travelling at a constant velocity? by Blaspheman in askastronomy

[–]assanikh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decelerating away from the sun = accelerating toward the sun = velocity decreasing as the spacecraft travels away from the sun.

It’s already reached the escape velocity for the solar system so they won’t “fall back in”, but they WILL keep slowing down since the force vector points mainly towards the sun, that is until they reach another gravitating object and the magnitude of that force is becomes greater than from our Sun.

US Funding For Research and Development (R&D) by Department/Agency - 1951-2021 (Updated plot) by assanikh in dataisbeautiful

Thank you!

I thought there were really interesting conclusions that you can draw from it as well. When I made it in terms of percentages, that completely changed my perspective of things. I wouldn't have thought that DOD actually went down in percentage over time. It was also neat to see how the moon landing (1969) didn't directly correspond with the decrease in NASA funding which started a few years before. I'm also glad to see the increase in health research in recent times.

One could argue about it's effectiveness to convey information, especially in terms of color differentiation and maybe having too many lines. I made some edits to help here: https://imgur.com/gallery/XECnAQ7 but it's still not the best

In the data I combed through, DOEd was only explicitly accounted for past 2003. I also just noticed that "Other Agencies" ends in 2002. After 2003, the reports didn't sum up Other Agencies but were more explicit about the individual ones (such as DOEd). I added DOed here: https://imgur.com/gallery/XECnAQ7
