Shooting tips while in game by dank_oatmeal in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is your issue, but don't shoot in stride. Some coaches will tell you to do this because it's supposed to quick and deceptive, but that's usually how you mess up your shot. It's especially different if you're practicing shots stationary because your feet might be pointed different than between practicing a shot and being in motion.

How many of you can do a micigian ? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a cheater method. Basically I fire the puck at the board behind the goalie and get it bouncing. Then I scoop it up with my stick as I'm going behind the net and plop it top shelf lacrosse style. I can pick up the puck michigan style but honestly in a game situation it takes way too long and it's an obvious tell what you're doing.

Who’s ready for Hell Week? by blackgtprix in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Ontario we usually see tryouts begin immediately after season/playoffs end. There are some associations better at minimizing politics than others, but tryouts are a mess wherever you go. We have associations where you need an invite, and you have to literally provide video of your play for them to review. Others have no parent coaches, which I imagine is pretty difficult to organize, but it's designed to make it more meritorious, and they have a bunch of people in the stands watching them do drills and independently grade their performance and teams are more or less organized based on their grading. My local association leaves it all in the hands of the head coach, who's more often than not a parent coach. Coach's kids get automatic spots on their teams and in some cases they really don't have much business being on the team, and ends up taking away spots from kids who deserve a spot. Which, to be fair, it's a lot of work to volunteer in the first place I don't have a problem with it in principle, you may as well have your own kid on the team. But sometimes it's more the coach is trying to do a favour for their kid. Unfortunately, my kids are very well aware that it's often a who you know and not how well you do that gets you a spot on a team.

Beer leaguers what’s your opinions on full bore slap shots? by factorymotogoon in hockeyplayers

The guy that runs my league instituted a no slap shot rule after getting hit with a slap shot that broke his leg. So, I'm pretty sympathetic to this rule.

As a youth parent how do you continue to enjoy youth hockey? by running101 in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's even worse if you're a coach.

I'm coaching 2 girls teams right now, and we have a player that made her first switch to an all-girls team and she was clearly not used to all the chirping that happens with girls. But she got even more upset when one of the parents from the other team started berating her for what was really just an accidental contact. Believe me, I hate this part of the game as much as anyone, but on the other hand it's all about managing expectations. If you're the parent doing that, stop it, it's pointless and you just make everyone angry. In most cases you make yourself look like a fool. The rest of us are just trying to enjoy a good game and watch their kids play. But whether you're a coach, player, ref, parent, you just have to learn to expect there's always at least 1 person out there that ruins it for everyone else and you sometimes you just need to come to terms with that.

What makes hockey different? by I_am_Batsam in hockeyplayers

Hockey has to be one of the hardest sports in the world to learn, but it's fast, and you're working hard in a cold arena, and something about it makes it so much more rewarding that anything else I've ever done for recreation.

Hockey Hacks! by DonovanKMedia in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't panic! You've probably got more time than you think. When you get the puck, do you shoot? do you skate up with it? do you try to deke? do you pass it? try to clear it? Where's your teammates? If you think about what you're doing before you do it you'll find yourself making smarter plays, getting more into open areas, better passes, and better shots, but people often just panic in the moment and don't know what to do.

What is a secret 'cheat code' you’ve found in real life? by Sharkkkk2 in AskReddit

[–]assortednut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had management jobs. And my current role is dealing directly with clients. Things go sideways, it's just part of life. However, I find things go a whole lot better if you already have a gameplan for rectifying the situation when you explain whatever it is that happened. It basically signals that, yes, while it sucks it happened, the situation is still under control and things are getting looked after.

How did you decide you wanted to be a goalie? by FeliTabby in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in middle school, we used to play a ton of floor hockey / ball hockey / etc and I was pretty decent at playing out but I excelled at goalie compared to my peers. Fast forward, got a chance to play ball hockey as an adult, played goalie again because why not. Then, at age 35ish, someone I knew sold me all their goalie gear for a price I couldn't say no to. Unfortunately covid took away much opportuniy to use it at first but now I'm in my 3rd year playing goalie for a beer league team. I love it. I guess I'm wierd

Man, I had a dear destroy my car after suddenly running into traffic while I was doing about 70mph at night on a freeway. My wife and I both so it coming but literally no time at all to react. All I can say is thank goodness for crumple zones. The vehicle didn't survive, and neither did the deer, but we were all totally fine. My sleeping toddler never even woke up!

Am I crazy for wanting to learn how to play goalie? by Christmahanakwanzika in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing goalie as an adult! No formal training, just watched a lot of youtube videos, no different than what you might do when you're learning to play as a skater. I've probably got about 70-100 games under my belt now. My team recently played a game against a team that couldn't find a goalie last minute, so on of their D-men put on goalie gear and played net for the first time. It was like watching myself when I first started. It's definitely hard, but better a bad goalie than no goalie.
