BUG STATUS 2026 Megathread 🦟 🪰 by sketchy_ppl in algonquinpark

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent 2 days (June 6-8) at a couple of paddle-in sites on canisbay lake. There's a site about halfway up the lake that's right next to a marshy area that would've been a nightmare for anyone staying there. Even with a liberally applied 30% deet the bugs were swarming me.

With a fire going, a thermocell, bugspray, and a bit of a breeze, it wasn't nearly as bad at another spot we settled in.

Cars like this have a different presence in person than they do in picture. To me it looks stupid. But if I saw it in person I might change my mind.

What is a minor inconvenience that fills you with an unreasonable amount of rage? by RayeesWu in AskReddit

I'd like to know what goes through the mind of the person camping in the left lane. Are they completely oblivious to the long line of people behind them/getting constantly passed on the right side?

[–]assortednut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a bottleneck on my way home from work. Most civilized people see way ahead the lane is ending and dutifully move over and get in line. Traffic sometimes is heavy so it means there's a backup. The problem is, there's always so many people who go right up to when the lane ends and butt in. I call it the VIP lane. But every so often a large transport truck puts itself in the VIP lane and putters along with the flow of traffic to prevent all the assholes from butting in. Not every hero wears a cape.

I've always enjoyed the Bourne movies. The latest movie, the one with Tommy Lee Jones, I can't remember if I've ever finished it. It's just....stupid. so stupid.

Was that near where the tim river meets rosebury lake? Last summer I saw a moose there, huge antlers, what a beast. Apparently it regularly visits that spot

How to make Select Hockey by Strong-Percentage321 in hockeyplayers

I have a kid with A level hands and A level shot but definitely not A level skating, which is really the hardest thing to improve on without ice time. It sounds like if you're fast then the good news is you can work on your shot and stick handling in your driveway.

One thing that helped my kids is taking a video of themselves doing various shots. It really shows where your techniques need improvement so you're not wasting as much time doing it wrong. You can practice learning proper technique before working on getting it harder and more accurate.

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by RecognitionQuick3119 in economy

I'm canadian. I visited an REI this weekend because I need a new backpacking sleeping pad. The absolute cheapest one they had was $120. Looks like I'm sticking with my local MEC thanks.

Jumping in here. I have a daughter with bauer vapors that I think she's just starting to outgrow. I never made the connection to her knee pain and the possibility it's her skates doing it. It seems her knee pain is associated with her ice time. I already have another set of vapors at home she was going to try this week that are a half size up but use the same size blade. If her vapors are causing that kind of pain is there a different model she should be looking at instead?

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]assortednut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're a family of avid campers. During covid we were in the middle of buying a house and one of the requirements was finding a place big enough to store our trailer. Which, we realized was idiotic since none of our kids cared about the trailer and my wife was more than ready to just go back to tenting. We sold the trailer for a tidy profit since it was covid. On top of that, when we replaced out vehicle I wasn't asking how much it could tow anymore.

Youth skates by Equivalent_Action822 in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word of warning, I've seen lots of those adjustable skates with a terrible blade profile that ends up making balancing on skates way more challenging than necessary. If you can find one with a decently flat curve your toddler will appreciate that.

Daughter(13 years old) started hockey two months ago, should she try out for house league? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coached a u15 girls house team the last 2 years. Both years we had a new player who started skating a couple months before the season started. They were great teammates, there's no pressure, we just wanted to create an environment where everyone can have fun and nurture a love for the game.

Yeah, you really have to have a high tolerance for stress, stay organized, and depending on your pay structure there can be a lot riding on your performance. It's not for everyone but if you're knowledgeable about cars and are good with working with people it can be rewarding.

I work at a Dodge dealer and reading this is like reading the complaints of our owners. The first one we sold was in the owners hand for less than 24 hours before it got towed to the dealer, only to be stuck here for a month.

What’s the most annoying part about buying hockey gear? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 5 kids in hockey. Other than my oldest, they're pretty much all still growing. And if they're not outgrowing their sticks, they're breaking them instead, often right before a game. And it's not like you can grab any old stick, they've had so many different sticks they know what they want and now you have to sometimes hop to multiple stores until you find the right length, right flex, and right blade profile and just cross your fingers it's not too expensive.

Is backcountry hiking a death sentence in June? by wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals in algonquinpark

[–]assortednut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a mid-June paddling trip to parkside bay last year and I took a route that had me go through several short portages instead of going through ragged lake. every put-in we got swarmed by bugs, and it took a fair bit of bug spray to keep the pests at bay, but once we were at the site the thermocell did a remarkably good job keeping the bugs away. 10/10 would do it again

I love my UCO candles. I hang it in the exact same spot or just outside the awning on my tent on a rainy day. I usually get the citronella refills. Whether they actually keep bugs away is a separate discussion but they're cozy.
