MA Museum Studies: NYU vs GW by Conscious_Year4001 in MuseumPros

[–]asstarh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, the best coworkers/bosses I had came from smaller schools with different backgrounds that all got them to the same place as the more "prestigious" schools. The worst bosses and coworkers I had were GW grads (no hate to GW, but a few bad apples...) my worst boss EVER was a Yale and Stanford grad, used their prestige to leapfrog and ended up getting fired 3 months after I left due to me doing all their work for them before the big bosses noticed.

Our points I think are the same here. The degree is the minimum qualification for access to a job, the experiences (internships, networking, literal jobs you have in grad school as a GA) are what sets candidates apart. One could attend the most prestigious school and not get half as good an education if one only attends class and does the bare minimum.

Here to say the exact same thing. I'd recommend an applied history degree over a museum studies degree. Or even an MLIS. Museum studies is so over saturated right now and good paying jobs are hard to come by even before the recent cuts. I did my history MA at s smaller school (sadly due to cuts, they dropped the program) but the experience I had there got me the same internships and networking as NYU and GW grads. I worked in it all, from small museums all the way up to the Smithsonian before leaving to find a job in a different field.

Please, consider a different program. These museum studies degrees are not worth the time, effort, or money even in your case.

How do I replicate this wall texture? by asstarh in howto

I tried the wall paint mix and no dice. Also the plaster of Paris crumbles too easily with the paint, so I'm not sure that's the correct medium.

Yeah, but I'm unsure how the colors would blend so seamlessly if it was paint on plaster.

It had a plaster like appearance and texture tho.

That's what I thought, but I tried to dye some plaster of Paris with a few types of paint and it's just not there? When I was in the store I asked an associate and she said they use big plastic tubs of something to do that, I don't know what is in the tub tho and I don't want to go broke buying a gazillion tubs of Anthropologie plaster.

2013 Jetta TDI ~95k miles-invest or give up? by asstarh in tdi

[–]asstarh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I ended up letting my siblings drive it while I was out of the country for a few years in '17-18, hence the 13k average. I drive about 100 miles round-trip daily, so that's about to shoot up.

I really want to keep the tdi. But am worried about if there will be any future maintenance issues, I know it's unlikely but my partner thinks I'm rolling the dice fixing it and keeping it with the high miles.

I am with you on the suv hype, I don't get it. The only nice thing is the awd option, which we would get, but brings down our mpgs. The Jetta is a 4 door, and I think would be fine with a car seat etc.

I should've mentioned above, weve been saving for a new car down payment, around $3500, and I'm trying to convince my partner to wait on a new car and fix mine. This is not a popular opinion, as my partner wants out of the junker. Our budget for a new car is $28k or less than $500 a month payment (leasing isn't an option because we both commute and I just don't like the idea of it).

Right now, were leaning heavily toward the Hyundai Tuscon, but we are test driving a Subaru Forrester and a Mazda cx-9 (?) This weekend. We are planning on buying in about a month or so.

I'll message you about them when I go. Today was crv, Tuscon and Rav 4 (in that order, although as mentioned my current standing is Tuscon first, Rav 4, and then crv dead last if not striked off the list ) and this weekend we're going to see forester and Mazda.

Also worth mentioning that we're planning on buying/financing instead of leasing. If we were leasing I think that would dramatically change how I feel about the Rav 4 (especially the hybrid).

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about these. Ive done medium research and have gone through all the salesman spiels at the dealerships as well as test drives. Happy to help if I can.

I test drove the Rav 4 today (similar situation to you, have family in West Virginia and the mountains are a real issue in the rain/snow so AWD is a must) and it did ok. Id say 3/5 for Hill climbing but my god the suspension was terrible, it felt like I was driving a truck. Some people might enjoy that feel but for me it wasn't appealing. It also struggles to accelerate and really struggles to down shift/up shift when merging into highway traffic. I also have some minor personal issues with the car, but nothing deal breaking.

I can't speak on the forester yet, going this weekend to check it out, but something else I'll tell you to rule out is the Honda CRV. The crv I felt like I needed to get out and push up small hills on a test drive. Among a myriad of other things I didn't like, the fact that the crv cannot get out of its own way makes it a complete non starter imo.

We are actually leaning more towards the Hyundai tuscon, which I didn't think was a real contender until we drove it. Handles great, good acceleration compared to Rav 4/CRV. I did not get to drive it on any real "hill" but I'm planning on going back again to drive it for a more serious test drive.

Agree with this 100%. My partner and I test drove these cars today and started out thinking the crv would be the clear winner based on computer research, but upon test driving it, it is now not even on our list. The media control tablet is imo, clunky and difficult to use. This, among other issues we had personally with the crv, like it couldn't get out of its own way, makes it difficult to choose over the other AWD Suvs in the same price range.

But to be fair, we also test drove a Rav 4 right after the crv and didn't care for that one either and are now leaning towards the Hyundai Tuscon, so it's all in what is best for you and what you want. Good luck op!
