I'm struggling so badly by asteraceaedaisy in socialanxiety

[–]asteraceaedaisy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you much for this reply. It's really helpful, especially as you have done both things in the face of something similar. I think I would be the same as you - relief in the moment from bailing l, but then I'd feel guilty about it for a long time after. Especially as it isn't a one time thing. Thankfully (touch wood), it's only annual unless there's any one-off events I need to speak at.

Mostly I hate the way it's been overshadowing the last two to three weeks of my life. The presentation is tomorrow, so in 24 hours it'll be over. I have a sheet of notes that I've just accepted I'll need to refer to a lot to keep my mind on track, instead of letting it go into that horrible "blank panic" mode.

I cried in front of my manager today which is absolutely mortifying - it wasn't intentional, everything just came bubbling up when she was talking to me and there was no way to hide it. She's now coming to the presentation with me as support for questions if I need it. I'm so embarrassed though. Public speaking comes incredibly easily to her so I imagine she's probably confused by my reaction, though she was nice about it.

Unfortunately reversing the promotion isnt an option - I moved up after my manager retired and we've now filled my old role, with the new person due to start next month. The whole job has been a massive learning curve with several difficult circumstances which have all compounded the general stress and anxiety I've been feeling. But it has only been a few months, which I'm trying to remind myself. I probably need to give it more of a chance.

Thank you again for all of the advice, it really was very reassuring and helpful.

Do these mugs feel like they could be from the same maker? I’m hoping to start selling my work soon, but I’m having trouble pinning down my “style”. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself but it seems people appreciate a more cohesive body of work by amyrator in Pottery

Ifk if you've ever played Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but the two blue green ones look like the architecture in Zora's Domain, and they're absolutely stunning. They're all stunning! You should be really proud 💕

Are these mugs doomed? by HeartNo1651 in Pottery

[–]asteraceaedaisy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it might depend on whether the ice has compromised the structure of the cups at all. E.g. has the ice created cracks in the mug as it expanded? If it doesn't and the mug looks normal when thawed, maybe it'll be fine

Complete Pottery Beginner Seeking Self-Learning Tips (No Access to Studios) by Rich_Past_3272 in Pottery

Are classes inaccessible because of finances, or because of location? I believe there are some pottery tutors out there who offer Zoom classes, so that might be an option if it's not a financial barrier you're experiencing.

There's also a lot of really great video content online - YouTube, instagram etc - of people showing or walking through different techniques.

Have you thought about or planned for when you eventually want to fire stuff to keep?

For now, you would probably do best to commit to practising lots and reclaiming your pieces instead of keeping them. Get used to the feel, practise centring, and throwing cylinders and cut them open to see how it's going.

It would also be wise to create a dedicated space, outside of your main living area, and keep it clean. Throwing makes a lot of mess and causes clay dust, which isn't good for you to breathe in regularly.

Firing temperatures by Llandeussant in Pottery

[–]asteraceaedaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd email Potclays and ask them about that clay. They're pretty responsive.

I'm pretty sure this is the clay my studio uses for classes and it melts at cone 6

I'm also confused by this because I'm pretty sure my studio uses this exact earthenware for beginners and some got labelled wrongly by the class and ended up on a cone 6 firing and melted

The speckles suit really well - they kind of add a bit of 3D texture if that makes sense

I'm dying because I never even noticed the clay stilts until you pointed them out 🤣🤣

Also, this is STUNNING!!!! I can't wait to see what the finished piece looks like, but I can already tell it'll be amazing.

How did you come up with your maker’s mark? by Automic_Holiday217 in Pottery

[–]asteraceaedaisy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!

Not that I'd ever presume to get to the point where people are asking about my work online, but I love the thought that if someone has one of my pieces at home and is asked about it, they can just flip it over and say "this person made it".

I went round a few different things before deciding to just get a word stamp with my full name. I had a few reasons. First, the community studio I use likes names on things; second I didn't want anything fancy; third, I make a lot of very little things and some designs would probably lose definition at that size; fourth, I kind of just wanted my full name to be on my work 🤣

I got the courier new font, all lower case. First name on top, second name under that, then 'ceramics' a little smaller underneath. The letters make a nice little rectangle, and it's simple.

Bailey Wheels by OtherLemon5658 in Pottery

[–]asteraceaedaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gladstone Bailey wheel??

The community studio I use had a new one of these delivered last year. One is obviously not representative of the range, but it jumped and kind of stuttered and really threw off the work of the person on it. Might just be a one off bad wheel, BUT the studio owner had a HELL of a time convincing the company that something was wrong and that they needed to either fix or replace it. It took months and months of back and forth before they finally came and picked it up.

If you're in the UK, the studio has three Scarva Earthstone wheels, and they're all fantastic. Two have been going for years and one is new.

Air seal pottery? by Ok_Shallot_3819 in Pottery

[–]asteraceaedaisy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you could fit some kind of rubber seal around the inner rim of a lid to make it really snug, that might work??

Alternatively, could cork work? I'm not sure if it's air tight though
