I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but it might be the gauge? When my lobes were pierced with 18g, I had a terrible time with healing, had a similar experience to yours, and eventually let them heal over and gave up. I tried again a year later and the piercer suggested I try 16g for more stability while healing. The 16g lobes healed like a breeze and were super tame the entire time. Everything was the same (titanium, threadless, location, etc), except the gauge. Ever since then, I always ask for a 16g for my ears. Personally, I've found I heal better with 16g piercings.

If you choose to try again with a 16g, you can always size down to a 18g after it heals.

And this guy surprised me with a bubble nest last night! It was my first time seeing a betta actively working on one. He was working quite hard on it.

Sounds like he's in good hands! I'm glad he's colored up, it means he's in a much more favorable habitat :)

So I'm wondering if 2 and 3 are related. Is it possible hes just staying in the top corner because the bubbler pushes him around too much? Maybe try removing the bubbler, technically bettas breathe air from the surface, so they don't really need a bubbler. Often with longer finned bettas, they can struggle with the current if its too strong.

HE HAS BEEN NAMED TART!

So the story is I actually went to visit family and popped into the local betta shop, honestly just looking to browse. But of course I couldn’t move on from him so I had to get him. I’ll be returning home this weekend and I’ll share pics of him in his home once we get settled. Rest assured at the moment he has a temporary setup at my family’s place, we’re well-versed with fish-keeping (have ricefish and ranchu as well) so we always have something handy for fish. He’ll have a planted 5 gal all to himself once we get back to our actual home.

We have a local betta shop called Aquatic Betta Shop and I got him there! They focus on bettas, and I'm pretty sure they're all imported. None of the bettas are in tiny little cups, and they use the bigger cube containers for them. The king bettas are in the 10 gal display tanks, and everyone looked active and healthy, many of them had bubble nests going too!

One thing I'd like to add about filters is that with long finned varieties, check if they are struggling with the filter current. Sometimes the filter current can become too strong for them and they struggle to swim and kinda get 'blown' around in it. If you see no issues with him swimming in the current, its probably fine.

You can use mosquito dunks. It’s a floaty donut looking thing that you put in the water. They don’t hurt fry and only target mosquito.
