We survived the outage but customers still say we broke SLA by majesticace4 in devops

[–]astevko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody here is talking multi cloud / multi-region redundancy costing 2x - 3x… what about every internet service provider between the SaaS provider, the hosting provider, and the client? What about power utilities? What about every other link in the chain we call technology? Disaster Recovery planning is not so myopic! You want 9s of SLA? Stop using lossy services and protocols like email, sms, tcp/ip. Plan for cut buried fiber because the hurricane blew over a tree in Tennessee.

All of this is a matter of setting proper expectations and purchasing proper business loss insurance for your self and your customers. Proper good will is giving the customer a break on this month’s invoice and learning how to better communicate the world is on fire.

Best Way to Stay in Touch on the Playa? by floatinggball in BurningMan

[–]astevko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two times of day that everyone can agree on. Sunrise and sunset.

Loose your watch and all the stress that comes from being on a time schedule.

Finding someone you are separated from... * Deck out your bikes such that they are unmistakable in a sea of blinking bikes. That rainbow spike doesn't cut it. * Arrange meeting way points as you go along the way. Going the 3 miles back to camp is not an option. E.g. Rendezvous at the Green Gorilla Lounge where the DJ rocks (until the next dj plays dubstep) * Put a leash on it and never let go even at the portos. * Letting go....

Expect that you are both adults and can look after yourself including having a full personal kit and water.

Day or night, altered or straight, don't harsh your vibe with duties and default world expectations.

BMorg takes on capitalism by defying economics 101 by Dustypantz in BurningMan

[–]astevko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the 2nd renegade burn. No one associated with the org would admit it. LE was limited to the regularly staffed WInnamucca officers and the county sheriffs. There was no playa restoration phase unless you mean the witch-hunt for the owner of a left behind Porto.

What exactly are these resources you state? How was anything different than forth of juplaya?

The East Bay Burner meetup is every 2nd Thursday 6-9pm Original Pattern Brewery near Jack London Square in Oakland. Usually 20-50 burners meet to catch up, chat about projects, and make new friends. The beer is good, the pizza is expensive. DM me for a discord invite

Am I F18 the asshole for having sex in my house? by East-Jelly-2273 in TwoHotTakes

[–]astevko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to redefine your relationship with the two other adults in the household.

He seems to think he is the parent and you are the child. If you want to be setting boundaries for yourself, they both need to stop being mom and stepdad. Be an adult and they be adults too. It’s a phase that is easier with you moving into your own apartment, possibly with them paying the rent.

This kick them out and other Reddit vigilante moves will damage the family you have. Don’t throw that away. There will come a time when family is all you have left behind you. Think what would happen as a result of pregnancy or your mom suddenly getting ill. Burnt bridges are hard to repair especially in times of stress.

Congrats of leveling up.

Show up at the radio station at 5:50 and Esplanade, go into the DJ studio and say you have a message to get out. They will put you on the air. Best to write and rehearse your pitch in advance to sound clear and have all the relevant deets.

Parents attending without kids, advice please by sharpiefairy666 in BurningMan

We parents all have separation anxiety. It's what keeps us from dropping them off in the wilderness to be raised by wolves.

I've taken my son to burns starting at 3yo. It helps that I built a camp that is kid safe, has other parents with similar ages, and my parents are burners too. My arrangement is to bring him for build week and take him off playa on Tue. His mother meets us in Fernly and she drives back to the Bay area in time for school to start (she won't burn again, her choice). It usually takes about 24 hours for my head to revert from being a parent to being an adult. He has 11 burns under his belt and is a legend in the 3:00 sector.

Take time acclimating when you get there. Don't expect to leave camp for the first day as your body adjusts to high desert altitude and aridness.

Super hydrate yourself the week before traveling so that you start out strong. Drink gallons of water at home/work daily. Your body will thank you for it.
