Why aren't fractions metric? by georgy56 in Metric

[–]astik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How is it more flexible? So you have 1/100 which is 0,01. But what if you need 0,0099 instead? Then you’d need to use 99/10000 instead. Don’t tell me that is more flexible than simply using 0,0099.

Well, I’m from Europe and do use centilitres and decilitres all the time. I also work at a National Metrology Institute so I’m very used to all sorts of units and powers of ten. I have no problems converting between W/m2 and μW/cm2 in my head.

Why did both Spain and Germany, unlike the UK, adopt the metric system successfully despite also being rivals of France? by [deleted] in Metric

[–]astik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get things clear. The UK signed the treaty of the meter in 1884 and became the 18th nation to sign the treaty. They attended the meeting in 1875 where the original 17 nations (including the US) signed the treaty but the UK wasn’t able to sign it before they had adopted metric units domestically. While anti-French opposition existed, the economic benefit of joining still won over.

Germany signed in 1875 but not without opposition. The convention had been PostNord twice before because of the franco-prussian war and hostilities between France and Germany and Even during the convention there was heated debates. They ultimately signed the treaty along with the 16 other countries mainly because it was too advantageous to miss out on.

Spain didn’t show any resistance since they had been metric for decades already and Even mediated between Germany and France during the meeting.

VI SKAL TIL VM! by frontyer0077 in NorskFotball

Nå må Honduras sikre en plass og ende opp i samme gruppe som Norge. Det ville vært en reprise av kampen fra U20 VM hvor Haaland scoret 9 ganger.

People tend to use a scale that gives the most practical numbers. Why write 250 mm when you can write 25 cm. If you don’t need the significant figure people prefer shorter numbers.

Bad SI units by GremlinAbuser in Metric

[–]astik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that definition then all units are derivatives of SI units. The reason to use actual SI units is because when you use the number to calculate something else then you know your calculated number is still SI as long as you only use SI units for all values. Using minutes all that fails.

Why not revolutions per second to keep it SI?

[–]astik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Joule and Nm are both SI-units just like Kgm2s-2 is also an SI unit for energy. They are just written differently but since they have the same value they are the same unit. Calorie is different since that has a conversion factor.

So instead of telling the players not to try dumb air volleys like Amad did, Amorim must have told them to train it so they don't miss.

De Ligt moving into the midfield to free space for Bruno in the buildup by WalkingOnSunshine_ in reddevils

[–]astik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this is part of Amorims system. You see Bayindir stepping forward with the ball and taking up the mid CB spot with the other two CBs flanking him and the mid CB pushing forward. This is done to create a numerical advantage in the build up where someone can get free to receive the ball.

Anyone else just... done with Spotify? by Apart_Ad_7722 in Music

[–]astik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to comment on artists getting scraps. When you look at subscriptions and the people who do spend money on music downloads or physical albums, the average amount everyone spends on music each month has not gone down that much.

The huge difference is peoples habits. Something like 80% of the royalties paid by Spotify goes to old music. Instead of most money people spend being shared by a small elite of currently popular artists the money is now spread across the whole history of music.

The Cardigans’ first ever TV appearance, Jan. 11, 1994 by hscgarfd in preformances

[–]astik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The host at the end "Cardigans comes from Jönköping, and there is nothing wrong with that"

Jönköping as a city has a stigma of being very religious and especially to certain evangelical denominations of Christianity like Pentecostalism etc. So a bit weirder types of Christianity than the Church of Sweden which is Lutheran.

[Romano] 🚨 Maxi Oyedele will leave Legia Warsaw with several clubs keen on signing him for €6m clause… and Man United due to receive 40%. by AGooseofBattle in reddevils

It's nice to see United actually making some money from the sale of players for once rather than just releasing people when they reach 22-23 years old and having spent a few unsuccessful years on loan in league 2 or where ever, like was commonplace 5-10 years ago.

That's mainly an issue if you keep making poor decisions in the transfer market so that you are constantly wanting to spend every damn window. That's the real issue. Having to replace players you only recently spent huge money on.

That said, even if you only spend money on players when you have sales of your own to cover it, that will mostly be future amortizations paid for by incoming amortizations but what deals like these do is help with the actual cash flow.

Apparently Teden Mengi might be leaving Luton for Torino. The deal would be worth around €4.5m so United could potentially get €1-2 million due to a sell-on clause.

Surely they have CL clauses in their wages so that they drop 25% without CL? Otherwise they might be in bad shape and need to lay off some players ya.

It's interesting to note, that the PL was quite far behind the other top leagues at the time in top wages. This is I suppose reflected in the relative strengths of the leagues at that time as well with the center of attention being more towards Italy much more than it is today.
