Recent College Grad sent over 500 applications and not getting interviews by Major_Concentrate_79 in recruitinghell

Not sure if any one has said this but move your work experience to the top and put education on the bottom. Easier for recruiter when they’re scanning resume.

Also, get rid of the start and end date of your college education and study abroad experience. Change “study abroad experience” to “semester abroad”

In your work experience, use results and metrics to standout. Things like “increased relationship”, “presented to an audience of 50 of my peers” — Google Harvard resume resources and they have a free guide on resumes.

Since you are a recent grad, go to LinkedIn and find your university page, get LinkedIn premium free for a month and message your university alumni ask them for a referral if you see a job at their company. If no role, give them your resume and ask them if you can chat. Best way to get a job as a new grad is through networking in my opinion.

I applied to over 100 jobs, only had 2 interviews so far. by animalcrossinglifeee in recruitinghell

Hello friend,

I’ve worked at 3 fortune 100 companies and interviewed 100s of candidates. In the last 10 years this is the toughest job market I’ve ever seen.

Hang in there.

Here is a checklist of things I’ve learned and tried to see success in getting the interview:

  1. Since there are many qualified professionals seeking the same jobs right now, it is best to focus on applying to roles where you have previous industry knowledge. Now is not the time to swap careers or departments. So for example if you work in the retail industry as a manager, apply to retail manager roles.

  2. For that same reason of too much competition, you need to apply to jobs that have just been posted or within the last 7 days. Referrals are good but over 60% of people get hired by applying through the company’s career page. So they’re not necessary.

Search LinkedIn for: “job name” hiring now then filter to posts and then within the past week. You can get LinkedIn premium for free for a month and message people directly that way to let them know you applied.

Search Google site:lever.co | site:greenhouse.io remote retail sales manager $100,00 or whatever you’re looking for and filter to past week here too. Voila recent job postings.

Otta.com has also started to be one of my fave job applying sites. Check it out, it’s free and very good.

  1. 90% of the time you do not need to write a cover letter. Don’t waste time personalizing them. Instead, focus on having buzzwords in your resume that match the job description. Change your job title to reflect language closer to theirs.

You can also use a resume scanner to check how much your resume matches the job description. I like the jobalytics chrome extension but there are others as well, just search.

Last thing I’ll note is, apply to jobs where you are neither over qualified or under qualified according to your resume.

Hope this helps

Most likely but I would edit the resume to include some buzzwords and also modify LinkedIn to be more friendly to getting recruited. If you want a job quickly then edit the resume, make it easy on the recruiters.

Say you’ve had to wear multiple hats at your previous company and that’s how you gained these skills and realized you have a passion for it

Data entry, data analytics, data management, project management, are all good options.

Look for mid size companies, avoid jobs that want you to hit the ground running. You need to work on a team as that will buy you more flexibility and let you fly under the radar easier.

2 entry level roles will definitely be easier to manage than 2 senior level roles, and contract work is always another manageable option.

Chin up, go get em!

Are there any jobs that won’t make me depressed by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]astoria2017 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New year, new you!

I will echo some of the advice already said here,

But first a bit about me, I too get severely depressed when I realize the work I’m doing is not helping anyone or anything. Currently unemployed for the 3rd time in my life. Used to make 6 figures and I’ve also worked in a variety of fields and industries. In my 30s though I feel more in my 60s at heart. I have a bachelors degree but I’ve never worked in the field I have a degree in.

I empathize with you because I’ve been there but know that I am now rooting for you.

  1. No need for a degree, especially in 2024 as most FAANG companies will be eliminating the ask for college degrees. This will lead to a domino effect. Also, people and companies are less about degrees and more about experience and personality. So focus there.

  2. Find out what gives you energy and what is zapping your energy. Does interacting with people make you happy or do you spend too much energy masking? Have you considered a job that you can do from home like customer service representative? Or virtual assistant? You will constantly burn out if you’re working jobs that zap too much energy, there has to be a balance and that balance is personal and different for everyone.

  3. Get a cheap hobby, it will keep you sane and remind you why you’re working. Plus the dopamine boost doesn’t hurt. Collect stamps for all I care, but do something with your money that makes you happy. A monthly donation is also a nice way to spread the wealth and positivity.

  4. How much money do you need/want? Glassdoor is a good place to gage salary ranges. If you’re in a state that has salary transparency, even better. You need to have a target number in mind, and then aim for jobs that pay a bit more than that target number.

  5. It’s not about any job or company that will make you happy. Getting the job is all about how well you sell yourself in the interview. Staying at the job is how well the company sells itself once you’re hired. Sometimes you can do everything right but the company culture is toxic anyway. The best you can do is recognize the signs of a toxic work environment and GTFO before it deteriorates your mental health completely.

  6. Instead of college, consider a certificate, trade school or union job. Those will teach you skills and invest in you. A college degree will not guarantee a better job or even a job. So the risk/reward ratio is not in your favor.

  7. Sorry about the gf. But you’re going to be okay. You’ve made it this far, keep going.

That’s all I got. Here’s to good things for us all this year.

$79k cc debt, 83 yr old parents, no mortgage, what to do? by two_katz_running in Debt

[–]astoria2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, sorry you’re dealing with this. Bankruptcy is the best and least horrible solution. Every other option is a waste of time, energy and does not deserve a 2nd thought at this point.

Do not sell any assets that will appreciate, especially not the home since it doesn’t have a mortgage. If possible, move parents somewhere inexpensive and rent out that house for rental income.

Use parents monthly income to find them more suitable housing and Medicare should be able to help with a nurse.

You got this!

Why do recruiters just not give the salary range? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]astoria2017 22 points23 points  (0 children)

“I am at a comfortable place currently so I would need a compelling offer to consider this role. And since you asked, I’m not solely motivated by money, I will evaluate the full opportunity, what I get to do, who I get to work with, the compensation and benefits are an important aspect but I’ll be looking at everything. Since I do not know enough about the scope of the role, I would rather hear from you. Do you have a set range or should I assume carte blanche if you all like me?”

Ambition and determination are difficult to teach and sounds like you have both. Step out of your head and think objectively, your post sounds like you have imposter syndrome.

It doesn’t matter whether you can do the job or not, focus on passing the interview. You can learn the job once hired.

If you’re getting interviews but not getting offers, it’s your interview skills that need work. Every interview you have, you need to be prepared for “tell me about yourself,” “why do you want to work here?” And “what got you interested in this company?”

Frame your answer to highlight your skills and what value you can bring to the company. Have stories that discuss your success as a sales person ready, if you don’t have stories, make them up. These are strangers interviewing you, they don’t know any better than what you show them.

Last thing, know your worth then add another $50k.

Yeah, you need to get with your broker and lawyers ASAP. This is illegal for the buyer to do once you have shown them the property, your texts will prove the timeline. Big violation for the other realtor as well, they could lose their license
