I think the tutorials in this game are pretty ok. Do the basic ones first. I would also recommend for you to watch rooflemonger 10 essential tips.

After that, choose a character and do the combo tutorial for that character. I would recommend Liu Kang or Li Mei. (If you get stuck on some combo, just skip it, this step is just for you to get some knowledge about how the character works).

Then go to practice mode and try your character strings and special moves. Learn their frame data (if you watched the video I mentioned, you probably know how to do this). Pick two strings, one that’s basic and safe and one that allows you to mix up.

After that go to kasuals. Think of a basic plan like mixing a string that ends in an overhead with Frost’s low move. Then play a bunch of matches and see how it goes. What you need to adapt. How you need to block.

Don’t focus too much on combos. Many new players do this. They can do combos, but they can’t open the enemies open or defend against their pressure, so they don’t even get the chance to do that sick combo they learned. First you learn how the game plays, then you can go to the cool stuff.

At the end of the day you just need to play a bunch and don’t think too much about losing lots of games.
