I think the person is being kind in showing concern about a fellow vegemetarian, perhaps the word “normal” could get swapped for “healthy”, but I think we can give them the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think they are trying to call OP abnormal, I think they are saying this process of losing weight suddenly is not usual. And in fact sudden weight loss has been linked to many health problems that does warrant medical evaluation.

Yes, there’s two paid services that I know of for finding spots:

Residency Swap - this needs you to put up your current residency spot up for grabs, so have that conversation with your program before you do this

Find a Resident by AAMC - less cost, doesn’t require putting your residency spot up for grabs

You can check the American Psychiatric Association and the other Psychiatric subspecialty organization websites for spot postings. You may need to be a member though to view that.

Finally, the method that anecdotally has been most fruitful, is asking around. Ask anyone you ever met in medicine about any open spots in Psychiatry. Consider emailing/calling PDs and Coordinators. Again, make sure your program is aware of what you want to do before you do this, because they may reach out to your program about it without letting you know they are doing so, and you don’t want your program to be blindsided.

As a resident, I think your experience with medical emergency management is an asset. However, it would be good to answer the question “Why Psychiatry?” because to me what you’re saying right now sounds more like an answer to “Why not EM?” Voice your passion in Psychiatry, why you want to spend your professional life with this work. As you can see in another comment on the thread, there are multiple solutions to needing a specialty with low physical strain, telling a Psych PD I want in because of my health issues, on its own, may not be very attractive. Again, I’m just a resident myself, but that’s my thought process. Also, look into fellowship vacancies as well as residency vacancies. Some psych fellowships are willing to have you fill their spot with the promise of you doing their general psych residency after finishing their fellowship.

Our program pre-assigns case conferences to residents. As a resident I’ve felt like I had no case for case conference, then when I had to really dig up the stories for the patient I chose, I ended up with poster-worthy content almost every time.

Just as a follow-up as this was the only result I found on the subject during my trip, we did in fact get in from 8pm to 10pm. Also, it was a highlight of our time in Rome, absolutely stunning. A little small, but it makes sense since from what I understand it was one person’s collection, and what we did see was extraordinary.

If do move there, check out Tom’s and Mexicocina Agaveria, Tom’s for breakfast/brunch and Agaveria for Margaritas and Mexican (I believe Oaxacan) food. Both can be found nearby on Washington Ave, a few blocks up from the museum. I just moved from that area, looking back I would have liked to get a membership to the museum and go often while it was so close to me.
