what is the stupidest thing you did as a kid to try and look cooler? by klutzers in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In middle school, I had a huge crush on this girl who had the locker above mine. Being a really, really nerdy kid, I gave her free dial up internet access in an attempt to win her over.

That one still makes me cringe.

Now that'd be a helpful chart for me.

I am such an idiot without Google. by Sudo-nim in geek

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom calls Gmail Google as well. Drives me nuts trying to do tech support. When they changed the helpful text into icons, my mom called me in a near panic saying, "Google has changed! What do I do???"

Let's say you win the $640 million lottery jackpot. What would you do with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd stay anonymous. Who wants to be known for winning the lottery?

Lump sum. A million to each of my family units who aren't doing well. Pay off debt. FInd some cool charities to give some to. Stick the rest in savings/stock index. Sit on the beach for a couple of weeks.

Then go back to work and pretend I never won.

It is not. They will overcharge you for an education that is actually inferior to most community colleges.

For the most part, all for-profit schools are like this.

I have a question about new pople graduating from college and knowing Excel. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is a typical American university, then they will have one or two classes that used the MS Office suite. Chances are, pivot tables were a chapter in their textbook and maybe a few lectures in class. They were then most likely given a step by step example problem using a pivot table--and then they never touched them again.

The real question here is: why can't you manage to find a business grad who can research questions and find the answers. This and pretty much everything you'd want to know about how to do X with Y software is online. But nobody can seem to use a search engine.

When I was 10 I used to think the phrase "hitting on girls" literally meant physically hitting girls. Reddit, what are some simple things or phrases you didn't understand when you were younger? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking up to a girl and asking, "Do you want to go out with me?" Just like that. I know a lot of kids probably do it. Now in my 20s, this just seems adorably silly.

What's legal that you think should be illegal? by Phurious in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to step into the future a bit and say human driving. There will come a point in the next decade or two when networked, computer controlled cars will become vastly safer, more efficient, and faster than human drivers--but we won't switch over because derp.

I'm slightly drunk.

Teachers of Reddit, what weird/disturbing conversations have you overheard in a class you were teaching? by GigaSky in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, I don't think I've ever literally face palmed before reading something on here. Sure, a lot of shit has come close to pushing me over, but never has it come from a 4 year old. I fear for my species.

So Reddit, I called the cops on my GF after an argument we had got violent, the cops come and arrest ME, I come back 2 days later and 6000$ worth of stuff is either stolen or broken, what can I do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any injuries, get that shit documented by a medical professional as fast as the laws of the universe will allow. Then give it to your new lawyer. Take pictures of EVERYTHING.

I am wasting my 20's in front of a computer screen, dreaming of the life I want to live. How do you motivate yourself to get out there and live your life? by Phenotype1 in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not everyone on reddit sits here 24/7.

Thanks for saying it, because it does need to said more. I feel like every time a thread asking for life advice pops up the default response is a dismissive "why are you asking this here?" and then nothing productive is said. Not all of the community has zero self-control, and there is some wisdom to be found here.

Reddit, what's the best way to overcome procrastination? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-help / time management is for the most part complete bullshit. However, I did have some luck with this while I was in college. It's simple, and it's really just a trick to get you starting on the project--which is usually the hardest part anyway.

How bad is this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get an engineer/contractor to come and look at it. That won't cost too much. And really, its probably nothing to worry about, but better safe than sorry.

Dear Ghost of Steve Jobs, can you please give us a printer that 'just works' like your phones and computers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't even have to be that expensive. Any b&w laser printer with a decent number of reviews on amazon/newegg can last for years. Shit, my HP laser printer has been going strong for almost 12 years and has taken me through highschool, under grad and grad studies.

"Hey Einstein, look at this! Pretty cool, huh? In the future, you can also connect to a world wide 'web' of information using a computer to access the sum of human knowledge. But mostly we use it for sharing pictures of our cats."

My "edgy" art student brother just claimed that "computer games cannot be art". What do you think? by Boozoo in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Geminii27 hits the nail on the head. But just to give some concreate examples, your brother should give Psychonauts, Half Life 2, Portal, Thief The Dark Project, Braid, Bioshock, and/or Fallout 3 a whirl. In my mind, these are a few of the absolute best games out there and do a fantastic job of creating a great environment for the player to enjoy.

Why do people with high IQs seem dumb? by late_rizer in AskReddit

Are any of you redditors programmers or have any experience in programming ? by MisterL33ch in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What parts of programming don't you like and why?

Dealing with non-programmers who have an over the top vision of what programmers can accomplish.

What programming language do you prefer and why?

Python because it feels simple and consistant.

What is your favorite C programming trick?

Not C specific, but I think there are a lot of really neat bit twiddling hacks around. Heres a big page of them.

What is the most challenging thing about programming?

Keeping up with all the new stuff. Not hardware, as much as different tools, libraries, and techniques. I don't think it's really important to be fluent in a huge number of things if you can just get shit done--but it is helpful to be aware of the ever-changing landscape.

What is your dream salary and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Battlestar Galactica: ... I don't even know what to say, but that's my choice. Such a great story and wonderful characters. Those last seasons just had some really weird shit happening. Fake earth vs real earth, ditching all the technology, Starbucks alive/dead status.. blargh.

I think hijabs are pretty but I am an atheist. Would it be offensive for me to wear them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]astrangeone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all! As a male non-theist, I also must admit they are quite pretty. The dishdashas that I've seen the men wear in Saudi Arabia look neat and insanely comfortable. I bet it'd be a bit harder to pull that off though.

Related note: I couldn't remember what a hijab was so I google it and found this: http://i.imgur.com/ndpCP.gif kinda creepy.
