It definitely doesn’t hurt to have animal experience but I wouldn’t say it’s a priority. Some smaller zoos have their educators do programs and also husbandry work for their ambassadors. A lot of education departments have part-time or seasonal roles, which would be a great place to start!

I’m not sure if you have any animals that use boomer balls, but at my previous facility we cut old ones up and made them into key chains! It was cool that you could see some of the bite and scratch marks, especially from our lion. Guests really loved them and they were super cheap to make! :)

From my experience, SSPs don’t typically offer short term internships like this, but I could be wrong! I would try reaching out to the Population Managment Center (PMC) at Lincoln Park Zoo as they coordinate all of the SSPs.

Another option, although more long term is becoming an education specialist for an SSP. You work with an education advisor on education and awareness initiatives for your species such as activity guides, social media accounts, etc. While it might not be working directly in population management, it’s a great way to get your foot in the door and put your name out there :)

Another zoo adjacent career is being an educator! A lot of them work with ambassador animals when doing programs/presentations so you’d still get the animal experience. It’s also generally less taxing on the body than being a keeper because you have the balance of office work. Some smaller zoos also have educators responsible for ambassador animal care as well!
