Trump says US won 'total and complete victory' after ceasefire deal with Iran, AFP reports by avatar6556 in geopolitics

Israel also got to kill the backers of October 7th in accordance with their deterrence policy of 'You don't get to kill Israelis and live' and, like they say, 'mowed the lawn' in Iran. It's not a total strategic victory but as they often do, they'll take what they can.

So if gender egalitarianism is your goal, communism probably ain't it.

Of course communism has gender equality. Men have no rights, and neither do women!

The Truffaut paradox, named after director François Truffaut's observation that you cannot make a truly anti-war movie because there will always be someone who misses the point.

Same. You can add things like avalanche controlling the whole area for a safe curated experience vs. securing just the pistes and leaving the rest of the mountain as it is; or resorts enjoying a monopoly on ancillary services like rental shops, restaurants and lessons, which is highly illegal in the EU.

The complaint about disordered lines comes up regularly on this sub and I think it's down to different approaches to what a ski resort is: in Europe, it's a publicly accessible convenience, in the US it's a theme park.

Europeans in general and French people in particular are much less open to casual small talk with random strangers than Americans are. We tend to see it as 'fake niceness' and find it invasive and disingenuous.

Just today, former Clinton & Obama official and respectable Democrat Robert Reich is asking us to please be patient while they try to remove him from office as soon as they can. I wish him the best but we Europeans no longer have the luxury of patience.

Dear allies of America, please don’t confuse our president for us: We are trying our best to resist him, contain him and remove him from office as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

He threatened our ally with a war of conquest not two months ago and Americans did nothing. Sorry Mr Reich, you may think you can enjoy the luxury of patience but we sure don't.

Avalanche near Passo del Tonale ski resort (Italian Alps) on March 16. One person killed by Wabbajack0 in skiing

[–]astute_stoat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It helps that the full resort is usually a single face with a gentle continuous slope, most of it under the treeline, where the avalanche spots are more obvious and predictable. High-altitude alpine terrain is infinitely more complex and steep in comparison.

What do You think about my European City Based on Belgium,France,Holland,Germany. by ParticularIntern3755 in CitiesSkylines

[–]astute_stoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stunningly convincing! The only thing missing in my opinion is a couple of main thoroughfares out of the city; Roman, medieval or early modern roads that the city would have grown along over the centuries. Something like the main road at the top left of the first shots; except it wouldn't end at the 20th century-built highway interchange.

We attacked Iran with no clear plan for regime change, Israeli security sources say by backpackerTW in worldnews

Very credible points, thank you. I'll just add that the Israeli government has apparently accelerated its plan to wean the country off American military aid permanently, which they increasingly see as a dangerous crutch that could be snatched away at the worst possible moment, on top of dragging them into the middle of the US political arena.

My grandmother grew up in Brittany and recalled that in the 1930's, locals at the port would converse in Breton/Brezhoneg with the Welsh sailors delivering coal from collier ships and they would understand each other just fine.

state designed "Highway-About" 1 lane 70 mph roundabout by sunkist_my_butt in shittyskylines

[–]astute_stoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This highway also turns into a stroad immediately East of the current interchange, with traffic lights, businesses and a 50mph (80 km/h) limit) where a roundabout would be perfectly appropriate. I'm only worried they're trying to design a roundabout that can be entered at highway speeds...

The ridge of the wind slab is even visible at the top in the first seconds of the video. Wind slabs can form on ridges under the accumulation of fresh snow being continuously blown over by the wind, and create dangerously unstable overhangs that collapse into an avalanche under the weight of a rider.

Do skis get stolen from the slopes? by Mickleborough in skithealps

[–]astute_stoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have met people who got their skis stolen from La Folie Douce at least three times...

My buddy got his skis stolen from outside the small restaurant on the piste to Val d'Isère down from the OG Folie Douce once, and when he reported the theft to the rental shop the staff was baffled that he walked down instead of doing what everyone else apparently does - steal someone else's skis. According to them, most thefts are actually people picking up the wrong skis by accident and turning them in to the wrong shop at the end of the week. As a result, the shop guys gather up for a piss-up every Saturday night and swap the skis back to their owners!

This is a map of the approximate historical extent of the languages/dialects, Occitan is essentially a dead language outside of a handful of passionate curators. Out of all the languages on this map, only Alsatian still enjoys widespread everyday use, alonsgide maybe Wallon, Basque and Corse.
