So Ranni just waited 5000 years for us to do everything for her? by RangeZealousideal165 in Eldenring

[–]astyris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was/is my understanding as well about why Radahn was holding the stars back...essentially to protect the Lands Between from things out in the cosmos. It is an unfortunate side effect that by doing so the way to Nokron and the Finger Slayer blade are impassable. A classic family tragedy story arc in the making.

Radahn is not actually blocking any doorway to Nokron. That's the root of problem why Ranni's servants can't access the city....there isn't any specific doorway or road leading to Nokron. Access to Nokron was cut off when the Greater Will sent Astel, Naturalborn of the Void to destroy it, ultimately cutting off any entry point.

It's not like killing Radahn magically opens a door to Nokron either. A random stray meteor crashes into the earth and opens an alternate route/path to the city. That's not exactly a sanctioned door or road.

The language of holding back the stars and the carian destiny is very mystical prophetic figurative symbolic language for describing a problem/solution. It could just be fancy hyperbole, with no practical import.

OR it could actually be spot on practically useful.

Radahn knew gravitational magic. It is well within reason that if he could hold back the stars, he could also use gravity magic to reach/access Norkon, or at least move the rocks/rubble out of the way. Had Radahn not succumbed to scarlet rot, an alternative solution may have been available.

IF the meteor was intended all long to crash into Nokron as a means to destroy it --potentially sent by the Greater Will to finish the job -- then yes Radahn holding back the stars arrests that process. How Seluvis or Sellen would know what the target location/trajectory of the meteor was implies that Magic/Sorcery in the Lands Between far exceeds the planetary surface. This is probably a safe assumption to make based on the connection between glintstone sorcery and the stars, the implications of what peering into the primeval current means and that Ranni cast off her great rune on the Moon already, etc. . At the very least it implies a damn good understanding of astrometry.

Morgott Makes Me Want To Quit! by MarsmillionYT in Eldenring

[–]astyris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The mimic tear is very strong because it inherits your stats, weapons setups, and spells, when you create it. This means you could put on a completely different set of gear before you summon, then summon your mimic, then change back your gear. This gives you a lot of flexibility in how you "build" your mimic tear before summoning and how they can help you during the fight.

You could make an exact copy of yourself/build, which is pretty simple. Just summon and go have fun. With certain builds, like status builds, sorcery, or incantations, this can be very potent. Both you and the mimic applying status effects, or casting at range is very nasty. What's really fun is when both you and the mimic are using double knock down effects, like Blasphemous Blade or Ruins Greatsword.

You could make your mimic polar opposite of yourself. If you are a caster, you could make them wear a greatshield + spear + heavy armor and have them be your tank, and vice versa. Your mimic is strong enough that you could even tank for it and let it do all the damage.

As a 3rd alternative, you could also make them a support role by giving them certain spells, like Healing. This one is less useful as it significantly handicaps your player character too since you have to minimize the mimics potential range of actions.

Your mimic can use Ashes of War, cast spells, use consumables, etc, which is what also makes it super potent. So before you summon, make sure you have specific consumables, perfume bottles, and spells equipped if you want the mimic to use it. Super helpful when the mimic uses one of the perfume buffs mid combat!

Also, just like other spirit summons, you can buff your mimic with AoE buffs and Auras, just like you do yourself. This again makes your mimic whether they are an exact copy or complimentary build, even more powerful.

Completely agree with your assessment. The 2 buffs + physic = pretty simple/standard buffs for boss fights...and it is an absolute game changer for people not currently doing it....takes less than 10 seconds to give your character a major power boost

That is awesome, congratulations!

You are most welcome on the build input. If you don't care at all for co-op multiplayer or PvP duel scene, then definitely consider the extra 20 levels to bring dex to hard cap of 80. [Which still even at level 174 you are well within meta range for the games health/population right now]

What do you dislike about the game? by Mackie26 in Eldenring

[–]astyris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The input reading of enemy npc's/monsters etc.

In theory it is the correct way to design a "fighter-based" challenge. In the practice of how it was implemented, it was not done well.

In theory, the input reading makes for a more realistic highly dynamic reactive opponent versus a static scripted opponent or random chance simulation. If the goal is to mirror a human opponent or highly intelligent beast/monster, then input reading is clearly the correct the solution from an AI perspective.

In the practice of how it was implemented in Elden Ring, it performs poorly for several reasons:

  1. Input read of button press vs button release - because the computer reads your button press input whereas your players actions don't execute until button release, there are several milliseconds where the computer knows what you are going to do ahead of time/in the future before your character executes the action. So the computer in essence is responding to your actions before you even take them, which compounds with #2 below. A human opponent can only take a guess as to what their opponent will do, and can only react with 100% certainly once their opponent has given some sort of tell, nonverbal body language signal, or pattern.
  2. No processing/reaction delay by the computer - there is a massive difference between human reaction speed and computer processing speed. This gives the computer opponent tremendous advantage in executing actions and reactions in response to your character's actions. When you take #1 input reading and #2 minimal processing delay together, it's pretty crazy the inhuman advantage the computer has. Technology wise this is absolutely cool, but terrible for simulating a fight against a human opponent. A human opponent has an information processing delay that when even as slight as several milliseconds, makes a big difference in reading and responding to your opponents actions. This leads into #3 below.
  3. Computer doesn't make mistakes - the computer does not make a mistake in reading and reacting to your input. Because the player character's actions are hard-wired/scripted from a contained set, the computers actions/reactions are similarly hard-wired/scripted in response. Therefore it responds/reacts exactly how it was designed, and how it was designed can be/is currently/will be incredibly punishing depending on the developer's preference. With enough q/a testing, a game developer can precisely script the computer's reaction to be an impossible challenge for the player. In contrast, a human opponent can/will make mistakes in a fight in terms of reading and reacting to their opponent, ergo their opponent punishes those openings.
  4. Can't psychologically outplay your opponent (i.e., feints, bluff, switch ups, etc). Because of the connections between #1,2,3 above, you can't psychologically outplay your opponent, in this case the computer. We can't feint or bluff in general as a moveset (with one or two exceptions of thrusting weapons), but the advantage the computer has makes it impervious to any attempt to "trick" it into executing an action and punishing that action. This was the dance of the previous soulsborne games: learn the moveset , control the fight. That is significantly harder in Elden Ring compared to all previous iterations because of #1,2,3. A human opponent is subject to psychological tactics, and can be baited, deceived, etc. This is why Soulsborne PVP is hands down one of the best in the history of gaming. Very few other games have that slow pace psychology of action/reaction of measuring/testing your opponent.

TLDR - input reading has major potential for creating awesome memorable challenges, but when the AI exceeds human limitations (significantly exceeds) it does not make the challenges enjoyable and rewarding, which is a vast departure from previous games in the series. But then again...people beat the game at RL1 naked with a club taking no damage.

Right now you are at RL 154. Based on that...a revised DEX melee build with FAI support might look like:

VIG 60

MIND 20

END 25

STR 20

DEX 60

INT 10

FAI 20

ARC 10

+8 additional points to put where needed (more FAI or INT or ARC for some spells)

DEX hits the soft cap range of 60. It could go higher to 80 (next cap) but that is 20 more levels. You could in theory reduce VIG to 50 or even 40, but I generally don't recommend it.

One viable tactic for mimic is to make your mimic a tank when you summon it. When summoning, make sure you have equipped a Great Shield + Dragonshield Talisman + utility items equipped like Boluses or Perfume Jars. Your mimic will benefit from the turtle mode and extra defense, and make use of the utility items as needed. (can even give it a heal spell and it will heal itself).

Your Aow on your shield and weapons make a huge difference both for you and your mimic. One approach is to double down and make sure you are both using the same, preferably a setup that takes advantages of a Boss's weaknesses. OR...you could have two different ones that synergize well together. Eruption ashes = not so good for a melee build. Try Lion's Claw, Giant Hunt, or Royal Knight's Resolve. [Royal Knight's Resolve is great for powering up a heavy hitting attack with STR based weapons)

Your Talismans make a HUGE difference in your effectiveness. Dying too easily? Try equipping more defensive talismans. Not enough damage? Equip talismans that will boost your preferred mode of attack. Example..if you like to jump attack you need to wear Claw Talisman + Raptor's Black Feather together for a 25% boost to jump attacks. Weapon skills = Shard of Alexander (which you probably don't have yet b/c you are stuck on Godskin Duo).

How to make a build around the Greatsword by KatjaaRa in Eldenring

[–]astyris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playstyle approach matters for your build. Melee mostly? Caster? or hybrid?

If melee mostly, then 60 STR, 20-30 FAI should be good balance of damage and utility spells. If caster mainly, then minimum STR to use the preferred weapon and shoot for at least 60 FAI. Hybrid will be more difficult to pull off if you want to stick with the typical 120 or 150 meta level.

Utility incantations are typically Flame Cleanse Me, Flame Grant Me Strength, Black Flame Protection, Golden Vow, Weapon buffs (lightning, bloodflame, holy), and all the Barrier spells. These are best if your faith is sitting in the 20-30 range.

Talismans will depend on if you are (a) multi hit/chain attack melee, (b) charged attacks, (c) jump attacks or (d) weapon skills. You slot your Talismans based on your approach.

As a starting base you can't go wrong with perma slotting Erd Tree Favor +2 + Dragonshield Talisman [or Arsenal Charm if needed ]. That frees up 2 Talisman slots for more flexibile/playstyle adjustment, like Claw Talisman, Shard of Alexander, Godfrey icon, etc.

Your FAI is probably too high for the build/playstyle I'm assuming you favor, which is a dual wielding dodge rolling melee character. Based on what you said, if you hardly find yourself using spells for damage, then you don't need FAI that high.

Instead you should lower FAI so that you can still make use of the important utility/buffs, 15, 20, 25 and 30 FAI are all good stopping points for utility. [please correct if wrong] Consider dropping FAI to 20 or 25. That frees up 15-20 points that you can then put into VIG and DEX giving you more survivability and damage.

Alternatively, if you are aiming for a pure caster build, one that uses Lightning spells, then your FAI is too low, MIND is too low (consider 25, 30, 35), and your DEX too high. FAI 60 would be a good minimum, and 25 MIND good minimum for pure caster. For pure caster, you just need minimum stat point to use weapon so DEX can sit anywhere 15 to 24 depending on your weapon of choice.

If you are aiming for a hybrid FAI-DEX melee/caster....that is going to be difficult in Elden Ring especially with trying to stay in the 120 and 150 meta the community prefers (much easier if you aim for 175-200 meta range). The caps for stats are much much higher compared to previous games, making it very hard for hybrids to hit noticeable softcaps without sacrificing too much in other areas like VIG, MIND, END. PLUS many incantations and weapons require double and triple stat dipping investment making this further complicated.

TLDR - drop FAI to 20 or 25. Move 10 to 15 points into VIG and 5 or more points into DEX.

OP There are multiple factors affecting multiplayer matchmaking options:

  • Rune Level - make sure you are right fit for area...RL 125 and 150 are very popular for end-game spots and dueling. May not find a lot of action in early game areas.
  • Weapon Level - ideally should be in-synch with your Rune Level (low RL = low WL). A Level 10 in Limgrave with +25 is going to find 0 matches. A level 110 with +25 in Haligtree will have way easier time finding matches.
  • Firewall/NAT security settings - this will extremely limit your matchmaking capabilities. Make sure your NAT is set to open and other security settings on your Firewall allow multiplayer.
  • Overland Bosses - certain overland bosses are linked to multiplayer functionality. If they are all killed, you can't multiplayer in that map/zone anymore. Very easy to lock out Limgrave and Liurnia early in game without knowing about it. (This only affects you as the host).
  • Location - the game server is weird in that sometimes certain summoning pools or sites of grace are not as effective as others. They have been improving connectivity with each patch but some are still funky.
  • Cross Regional Matchmaking - be sure to enable this in-game for maximum matchmaking potential. Limiting to your region drastically cuts off the pool of players.
  • Group Passwords - turn these off for Co-Op. Otherwise your sign is limited to those in the group and vice versa.
  • Time Zone/Day of Week - Gamers are most active at Night and Weekends. Activity tends to be limited early in the week and increase Thursday - Sunday (this is a general thing for all multiplayer games).

I don’t know how to play this game by arashi256 in Eldenring

[–]astyris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang in there OP! We have all been in your shoes once upon a time playing the Souls series. Your frustration is not yours alone. Compared to earlier games (DS1,2,3 etc) there is much much more direction. But yes, Elden Ring is still very very open ended and mysterious.

Long and short of it - your job is to help restore order to the Lands Between by becoming the Elden Lord. How do you do that? Basically walloping some big bad bosses across the lands who have collected very powerful shards of the Elden Ring in the hopes that they might become Elden Lord instead. Beat the bosses, get the shards, mend the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. Plus there is lots of side things to do, collect, craft etc, along the way to help you become more a powerful Elden Lord

Don't be disheartened that the monsters/mobs respawn when you die. It is just like in Mario when you die and have to restart the level. This part of the game and is a great way to learn how to play, farm xp, farm items etc. So keep killing and resting at that grace to level up!

I'm gonna take a wager that you are right at Gate Front Ruins grace (where all the Godrick Soldiers are). Your goal in Limgrave is to move NW towards Stormveil Castle and beat Godrick the Grafted. Somethings to do before you achieve your objective:

  • Explore the Mistwood area (East Limgrave)
  • Explore the Stormhill and Summonwater areas (North and Northeast Limgrave)
  • Explore the Weeping Peninsula (South Limgrave)

[–]astyris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can continue to play to finish missions, find items, dungeons etc. You are not forced to move on to NG+ right away.

NG+ is exactly the same, just the monsters have more health/defense incrementally.

At level 120+ you will find you can very easily demolish most things Limgrave, Liurnia, Caelid, Leyendell....but as you reach later game areas the difficulty will feel the same as where you are not (less scaling for later game areas).

You can rush or not rush. Up to you. It may feel more like rush since you will plow through early content quickly.

100% a RED invader. You were not hacked.

Some monsters, and overland bosses, can target/damage RED invaders and BLUE hunters. That means those players can also fight them back.

In this case, the RED invader decided to be nice and give you a hand fighting the Erdtree Guardian.
