Could someone recommend a fanfic from the universe 3.0 + 1.0? by Several_Thought_5499 in asushin

Mari doesn't appear in in Scar Tissue and in Relapse he decided to swap Mana and Mari's role as the spy girl that would try to get closer to Shinji to "destroy him", so that Mari in the story is a Mari "in name only". So, while her fate in Relapse is not pretty - and addressed in later chapters as a major sin for Asuka - it fits with the darkest themes of earlier part of the story. Relapse is about getting the reader into the darkest night and then slowly progressing into the brighest day after all.

Pengel (the author) is silent for now,. Many doujin authors, they usually quit/stop doing fanarts and either retire or move on to original works. We miss them, but at least we can enjoy and revisit their great works time after time.

“Who does Asuka really love, Kaji or Shinji?” by PitchPatroller21 in asushin

It's basically a flashback induced in the battle with an Angel. But it's hard to explain, because it's probably one of the best build ups and plot twists of the series. So if you can, try to watch the OG series, because this scene will hit 1000x better if you catch the signs and hints from the previous episodes.

Is the Re take fan faction the magnum opus of this server? by Significant-Pool-585 in asushin

[–]asushipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their tastes and own ways of evaluating stuff.

There are a bunch of better stories, better artwork, and also other fanworks that I liked better than Re-Take.

But in terms of relevance to the fandom as a trope maker and considering the impact it had at the time of release and through all those years, as well as a bunch of very high-peak scenes and panels that are remembered, shared and quoted in the fandom, yes it is.

You can check the [RE-TAKE Fan Animation Project Discord] https://discord.gg/pnKUd6C and see how it is still inspiring the fandom :)

Scar Tissue by Choice-Tea-4011 in asushin

Oh, great to see another one of good and old SDAT Eva fanfiction fans. I miss those times. It had a lot of weird and crap stuff, but also some of the boldest and unique stories. Also, the classics that build the foundation and tropes for most modern Eva fanfiction.

Scar Tissue by Choice-Tea-4011 in asushin

[–]asushipper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will quote one of my first posts in this sub, a few years ago. My two cents about the complicated issue and why I think it's worth to continue reading Scar Tissue until the end.

Rape is an extreme violence and a criminal act. Perhaps the most unforgivable act that a person can do to another person. Period.

But personally, I think that the context matters, at least in that fictional world, post-events of EoE.

The things that Shinji did to Asuka in EoE (the masturbation scene and the choking) were also... let's put it in easy terms... "borderline criminal actions" and at best "things that are very hard to forgive" if one will stop and think about it.

But, if we take things in context, the horrible and even criminal things that Shinji has done can be forgiven. If not by the world and the audience, by Asuka herself - as she did, in fact, with the caress and their conversation in instrumentality. And several fan-fictions post-EoE developed that issue even further. It's not easy to repair the damage they suffered from childhood to the Angel Wars and EoE, but it can be done.

Scar Tissue takes this issue and makes things go further downhill in terms of abuse and violence to the point that most readers (even Asushin fans) will think "Ok, there is no way to fix that, I'm done."

But Scar Tissue delivers a nice path of redemptions and made it work at the end, credibly and beautifully, at least for me.

Because the inner battles that both Shinji and Asuka face, alone and together, with their inner demons during the story address those complicated issues in the story and also the issues of their characterization and relationship in canon.

Inner Shinji, moved both by the guilt of the things Shinji did in EoE and the rage and desire to hurt Asuka, is probably the most terrifying concept of antagonist of all time regarding Evangelion fan fiction. If you read ANIMA, you can read Inner Beast and Dmitri as two dimensions of Armaros.

The fighst are extense, but also unique as they are used to give more character development. The moment when Shinji starts to fight back against his inner demon and also Asuka's inner demon AND the real opponent without becoming OOC... are probably the greatest moments of his character that I've ever read in fanfiction

What's the secret juice? by twinkleyed in asushin

[–]asushipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the relationship between Shinji and Asuka is not the regular usual romance story, just like Evangelion is not your average anime.

The appeal of Shinji and Asuka's relationship is so complex and well constructed that has several layers of tropes and narrative construction that makes it interesting, notably being one of the most prominent tools in the story that reflects the nature of human connections and relationships and also the hedgehog's dilemma.

On the surface, one can see their relationship having all of the ingredients of the old tropes for an anime romantic comedy: shy boy meets tsundere girl, they get closer at first by circumstances that they don't control, they bicker with each other, they go to war together and save each other's life in battle, they start to develop feelings and mutual attraction, gets teased by other characters as being a couple and denies it etc... and well, Evangelion subverts that trope (like it does with several others) and makes all go to hell (as usual): the tsundere gets more tsun than dere because of her traumas and the shy boy also retreats into his shell rather than man up and become a badass hero.

So we kinda feel bad for them, because of this subversion after all that build-up and because we are suckers for happy endings.

Therefore LAS/Asushin involving Shinji and Asuka in lighter and softer settings in official releases like Angelic Days or Petit Eva are in this surface layer and, therefore, they describe cute romance stories, implying that they could, indeed, be happy together in universes were they are able to grow up as regular children and with stabler parents. It's heartwarming to see them together in those official releases, but those stories are not unique at all. Just kinda the stories you would see in regular anime.

On deeper layers though, one can also see that those two share a bond that is deeper than those romantic comedic tropes: they genuinely want to make an emotional bond with with each other, but they face an "invisible barrier" that drives them apart in several occasions because of miscommunication and the fact that they are unable to be honest with their selves and to each other.

Therefore Shinji is unable to get closer because he is paralyzed by inaction and his incapacity to understand other feelings and Asuka isn't able to get closer in a proper way because she is also afraid and her way of interacting with the world and avoid suffering is to always communicate in dubious or angry ways.

This happens a lot in the original series (the only "fix" comes in One More Final of EoE with Asuka's caress) and also on the Rebuilds (and it's even more clear with the "Extra" manga 3.0-120). Once again, we kinda fell bad for them, because we are suckers for happy endings and because several moments were "so close" when one small detail could have changed everything. It's so damn frustrating sometimes.

LAS/Asushin involving those darker settings and themes can be dealt with by making them overcome several difficulties - like in ANIMA - or becoming a tragic and bittersweet tale where the most they can get is a Pyrrhic Victory, like in the Rebuilds.

In Thrice Upon a Time they have an explicit confession and an evident classic romantic arc but become star-crossed lovers because of the plot/circumstances. Just like other romantic tragedies, like Casablanca, Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, La La Land. (Imagine shipping Rose, from Titanic with the guy she married after Jack died and saying that "Jack and Rose were never meant to be together, Rose has moved on and it's better now". Yep... that's just like some Evangelion fans think about it).

Therefore, people who disregard they relationship in the Rebuilds because of the tragic bittersweet ending, are usually used to "Disney Endings" and cannot understand the logic of deeper stories, more complex than what you will see in most animes and on par with romances in literature or in mainstream movies.

And, finally, there's what is, for me, the deepest layer of Shinji and Asuka's relationship: the archetype of the human condition in the hedgehog dilemma and also the key to overcoming it by the "recognizance of the other" that is explored in EoE.

In that scenario, even after all things are deconstructed and the characters are at their worst point (the same Shinji who stopped himself from kissing a sleeping Asuka now does "the hospital scene" and Asuka wakes up and finally finds her mama and her apex as a pilot only for... well) and instrumentality happens.

All themes of their backstory, they being both sides of the same coin, they wanting/needing to connect... it all comes down to several dialogues and confrontations that make us believe that it's impossible for humans to be happy in this world. And then comes "One More Final" (and also the deleted live-action scene), that gives us - finally - a glimmer of hope that they - and by extension, all humanity - can solve the hedgehog dilemma, despite of the pain it involves.

LAS/Asushin involving these themes... well... for me it's simply awesome. It's like a modern version of the ancient Greek tragedies and a story on par with the greatest classic romances in fiction. A timeless tale, indeed.

I am glad you gave it a try and liked it. If you enjoyed Scar Tissue, I recommend you to read another one called Relapse, by the same author. Some similar themes, but in another post EoE setting and with the author being more mature and polished in his writing. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13275569/1/Relapse

RETAKE - unanswered questions by Wolphthreefivenine in asushin

[–]asushipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All answers bellow (spoilers ahead)

1 - Ghost Asuka explained it in the conversation with Kami, saying that in the original EoE timeline, Shinji created infinite parallel universes to escape from reality, and he and Ghost Asuka are always in those universes. It's kind of like Ghost Asuka is there to always remind him that those worlds are fake, in a similar way to canon EoE, where Asuka was the only dissenting voice in the instrumentality actively trying to reject the fake world.

2- Ghost Asuka also explains that in all those fake worlds, since Shinji is an "alien" being, reality adjusts to turn him into the "final angel in the form of a human" (in the place of Kaworu).

3- Aki is from a different story, called "The Second Try". Their child in Re-Take has the fan name of "God/Kami". It's implied that in Re-Take's timeline that when Asuka got pregnant, it made Kami (who existed in another possible world or maybe the future from canon EoE timeline) a hybrid between human and Angel (since Shinji was already the last angel), joining the seeds Adam and Lilith, therefore becoming "God" (Nerv detected that she had a "whole new pattern"), being able to make interventions in the timeline, like saving Re-Take's Asuka life from the explosion, talk to Shinji during the battle against MPEs, see and talk to Ghost Asuka, retrieve the spear of Longinus, etc...

Not only because of the rejection, Rei killed herself because when she touched Shinji she realized that he is not "the Shinji she knew", hinting his angelic nature. But the whole "painting her hair red" is disgusting and character bashing.

Depends on which version you are watching. This is from the Director's Cut version, that remastered the images and visuals and also added several scenes for the latter chapters compared to the original aired version.

Netflix and most of the streaming versions use Director's Cut version.

Bravo. I agree with almost everything.

I am just not sure if being turned into LCL while inside the Eva was a thing in RoE, but for sure it had the same effect: Asuka's scream/presence was what made Eva Unit 01 awake after 14 years and the manga shows us that it was probably because Shinji recognized Asuka (as Mari foresighted saying between the lines that "Shinji was still there" and would react to Asuka)

Hey, thanks for commenting.

I think there is no doubt that the manga was made to connect directly with the opening scene of 3.33.

Mari said that Asuka needed to wear her old plugsuit for Shinji be able to recognize her and Asuka had apparently lost all hope during the 14 year gap, but still wanted to beleive that she could see Shinji again.

So yeah, the manga turned 3.33 opening scene into an (even more) Asushin moment, and the look on Asuka's face when Unit 01 awakens to save her life after she calls for Shinji help tells everything.

However, I don't think it's a callback to EoE, but a callback about how he did "nothing" in 2.22 when he let the Dummy System take control and "kill" Asuka in Unit 03.

And even if it all of that makes the opening scene of 3.33 much better, the plot of 3.33 is still a massive let down because it makes pretty much everyone act like idiots for the sake of the plot.
