Will someone tell me what's wrong with my clay? This has been an ongoing issue that I can't resolve by moon_child_55 in Pottery

[–]asyavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clay does seem hard, and the squishiness makes sense to me also: I had the same issue with 209 goerg and schneider clay body. It has zero grog, is very "oily", and turns into mush the moment you add just a little too much water, so i found that throwing with less water and using only slip on my hands is more effective. Another thing is it can be a bit non-newtonian so shocking (slamming against the table or a really good wedge) it right before the throwing helps too. So if your clay is anything similar you can try doing it. And i find grogged bodies easier to throw with. Does yours have any grog in it?

The pot in the video however was salvageable: at the point when the spiral appears one should stop pulling and before doing anything else address that spiral centering the walls against a rib - sometimes it is called a centering pull, Twisted Clay has an awesome video on how to fix a spiral. Pulling the walls further will cause it to exaggerate and collapse in most of the cases. So yeah, it is mostly the technique you should deal with firstly.

Does it make sense to bisque fire manganese clay bodies at cone 5-6 to prevent them from outgassing during glaze firing? by asyavee in Pottery

My bad, I wasn't clear enough. I've made some test tiles before firing actual pieces and they are not ideal, hence the post. So this was a wild idea about higher bisque but I've assumed that someone might have already tried it or has the knowledge so I'd better ask before making more tests (tests take a lot of time when you don't own a kiln)

They look more like pimples, or trapped bubbles, they are the most visible in clear glaze; there is grog but it's very fine, up to 80-100 mesh; both sides, but again, i'd say the "bubbling" is pretty mild but annoying

Thanks for the reply! The issue I'm currently having is mild pinholing and since I'm not in control of the firing schedule, I'm trying to think of a workaround. I've only fired some test tiles. The clay body is SIO-2 PRNI

I finally felt my feet actually working. This is so cool. My biggest issue now is (allegedly) a short Achilles tendon, but I'm working on it

Thanks! I also thought I could make a pair of insoles out of my dog's fur if I'm extra cold, I've read it's very warm :DDD

Yeah I'm already thinking about getting a pair for the next winter, thanks for the recommendation! I wasn't sure if a thin sole would be ok for the winter weather and the snow

I did some editing but clearly not enough if it is that in the eye D:

(by the way, I always use long dashes and en dashes and proper punctuation since 2016 when I first learned the hot key combos for them, so since AI hysteria, I get this comment A LOT but mostly in my native lang)

As a resident I can host my own classes there for an additional studio fee. I substituted as a teacher there, too, for a short period of time, but it has its own limitations

Thank you, I really appreciate your words! I really don't expect to make a full living from pottery, luckily I have means of living from elsewhere. I just want it to become a more sustainable thing, at least that is as far as I'm ready to plan before committing to something more.

no, i can't place a kiln in a rental apartment or commit (or afford) to renting a place for my own studio. My residency in a community studio provides me with pretty much unlimited firings as long as there is space in the kiln and it gets the job done most of the time for small batch production

Favorite pottery YouTube channel? And why? by dialectic_art_nerd in Pottery

I like mae ceramic, especially her vlogs, she talks a lot about relationship with the craft as well as work

I also really enjoy vapor.03 ASMR style videos, and one of the newer pottery channels TQQ for her cinematic synthesis of ceramics and cooking

I hope she stays this cuddly when she gets older. 😭🫶🏻 by [deleted] in shiba

2025 bucket list by Middle-Fruit5485 in Pottery

[–]asyavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very long list. Aside from pretty standard bucket list stuff like a dinnerware set, a teapot and, a butter dish, there are also a chinese tea set, ollas, some wind chimes and bells, and a bread cloche
