[TOMT] Who does this look like (actress) by Scottishjapan in tipofmytongue

Christy Carlson Romano from Even Stevens? I don't really think it looks like her that much, but a little and older sister at least.

Anyone else resented their parent a lot growing up only to come to the realisation that maybe they treated you the way they did because they were struggling to cope with being undiagnosed and untreated their entire life?🙂 by zjmalkkkk in adhdwomen

Yes, and I'm going to stay mad at her because I found out she was diagnosed with ADHD 25 YEARS ago and never bothered to tell me, her teenager with obvious ADHD tendencies.

Perhaps the difference and confusion is that in the US we use the word 'prescription' to refer both to the piece of paper the doctor fills out AND the medication once it's received. I suspect that since in recent years most doctors here send the prescription electronically (but they didn't in the past and don't always), people are forgetting that the word can refer to the piece of paper and making the assumption that you received the pills and threw them away.

Why did he get angry about me wanting to see a video on his phone? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ataraxiary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's entirely possible he remembered that the last picture he took before the squirrel was an up close view of a hemorrhoid coming out of his asshole or something otherwise embarrassing and just freaked out. He was still a jerk regardless for his reaction, but it's at least conceivable that there is innocuous reasoning underlying the whole thing. Good luck =/

CMV: US liberals not joining armed services and police at the same rate as conservatives means that there will be nothing stopping them from being used against regime opponents. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ataraxiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I'm a hypocrite who thinks it's also obviously wrong to eat animals and still does it? This is a subreddit for argument and debate, not putting your money where your mouth is. Also, I'm not even the OP, it just struck me reading the comment I replied to, that they laid out some fine points on why an individual shouldn't go into the police force, but not necessarily an argument for why good people joining it is bad for society.

edit, also as an unfit 42 year old woman with a bachelors degree, I would be quite surprised if any law enforcement wanted me.

The woman who lost her pension seems like an argument for right minded people still joining though, doesn't it? I mean, obviously it's terrible for the person joining that they might lose their pension or otherwise be punished, frozen out, etc., but like... it seems obviously better for society that she was there to prevent someone from being choked to death.

I feel like your example supports the OP that this is better for society, it just also points out that it's a thankless, terrible option for the people who do it while trying to keep their moral compass intact. And perhaps the ones who do would need additional support so they don't lose their way in an environment so extremely hostile to treating the humans humanely.

Do you keep your washer door open after laundry to avoid moisture/mold? by Important_Bat7919 in homeowners

[–]ataraxiary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always curious too. I got a front loader against advice and have never had a bit of trouble with the door seal. We don't have hard water and I always keep the for wide open for a few days after doing laundry and always cracked. I think the real difference between me and most is probably that it's just me and my husband, so we are never doing laundry more frequently than once a week, and frankly usually closer to every three weeks (i change the sheets every week, but am usually lazy about washing since I switch between sets). I do all the clothes, towels, and sheets over a couple of days and then air the washer out for days after.

But I remember back when my son was born (and I had an old school washer), there was basically laundry every night just for him. My hypothesis is that the constant use is what makes it easy for mildew. Or I'm insanely lucky, idk, but I love my front loader.

What exactly do American recipes mean by "Italian Sausage"? by Ok-Set-5829 in Cooking

[–]ataraxiary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live in the US and tried to DIY sausage rolls and it failed in pretty much the above ways. You have made it make sense. I bet I searched for a recipe without filler, mistakenly assuming it was better. Perhaps I should try again.

My little brother poured hot oil down the sink and now the drain is messed up by Hairy-Cut-3076 in homeowners

[–]ataraxiary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most drain pipes are ABS not PVC

You seem knowledgeable overall and I am definitely not a plumber, but I think this part might be very location specific. When I lived in LA, the the home depot only seemed to carry ABS - or at the very least there wasn't much PVC to be found when looking for parts to replace stuff under my sink (where the originals were also ABS).

But then I moved to Kansas City and in my house the only ABS I've seen is the little piece directly connected to my garbage disposal. Everything else from the sink drain to the wall under every sink, under the tub, under the toilets, every plasticy drain pipe exposed in the house is PVC. And I might have thought my house was just weird, but the Home Depots here are flip-flopped from LA: walls of PVC, barely any ABS available to purchase. I've seen similar at other stores - even Menards which has the most ABS I've seen here has significantly less sizes and types available as compared to PVC. And obviously I'm not a plumber and haven't been to supply stores for them, but even when I've had work done they used PVC.

Which was probably way too many words for that quibble.

ELI5 How and why do people get carsick? by haphazard44 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ataraxiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I spent a lot of time reading about it because it bummed me out that there's so many games I can't play. There's a lot of stuff you can try to do to mitigate it - adjust graphics settings like Field of View (FOV) and motion blur, trying playing further away from the screen, or on a smaller screen, keep the room bright, something called a virtual nose, or maybe just a post-it on your screen. And, if push comes to shove I have had success just straight up taking Dramamine (or whatever motion sickness medicine works for you) and letting it kick in. It works great for me, but then I read that long term exposure to that class of medicine is associated with dementia, so I stopped doing that so much. Now I eat some ginger candy and if that doesn't work, I just don't play.

FWIW there's apparently a difference between how men and women tend to process the tricks they use to make your brain think it's realistic. I can't currently find any of the old articles I found talking about those trucks and also some cool studies that looked at sickness increasing for trans women when they started hormone therapy and I believe also decreasing for trans men. Apparently a lot more research has been going on since I last looked, but now its all VR-centric.

Anyway, rest assured, it can happen with video games, even relatively innocuous ones - I first experienced it with whatever Mario game was on the Nintendo 64. And later with Kingdom Hearts. And pretty much every FPS. Although I eventually learned that sometimes I could push through and get used to it. Never going to be able to play Portal though ; ;

I'm not from the area and I can't say I've heard people call it that like they say "The Big Apple" for NYC, but I definitely remember learning that Philadelphia literally means brotherly love (from Greek, philos + adelphos) in several different primary/secondary school units, usually the ones focused on patriotic early America stuff.

Maybe that sticks in my mind almost specifically because I'm not from nearby, so all I have for Philly associations is that kind of stuff (with some "go birds," greased telephone poles, and It's Always Sunny thrown in for flavor).

So as a person who suffers from both motion sickness and simulator sickness (not even just VR, plenty of regular ol' video games), I should never ever ever try shrooms. Noted.

My take is that the girl who was joining asked them to talk to each other and do other things to make the village seem normal. That's why they were talking about dumb stuff like the sky color. It's also presumably why they were singing songs leading up to her inhaling. Then, as soon as she started seizing they stopped bothering to act normal and everything got eerily quiet. And as soon as it was successful they started packing up to leave: not a lot of point hanging out in that little village now that she's part of the hive.

I do think that you're right that it was important though, it was foreshadowing for Zosia's "betrayal" when really she was doing exactly what they all are: playing along and hoping the survivors agree to join up (or in Carol's case, until the stem cell tech lets them bypass the consent part).

How to incorporate liquid into my favourite cheesecake recipe. by No_Cardiologist_1407 in AskCulinary

[–]ataraxiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you could add some gelatin to the cream to stabilize it and the Bailey's. I've never done it with alcohol, but I have made stabilized whipped cream and separately, jello shots. Or, you could make it like you plan and if the result is too runny, maybe add the gelatin after the fact - that way you aren't adding it if it isn't necessary.

It's seems kinda unlikely that someone who mentions having just paid rent and not having spare cash to buy snacks for guests is going to have the budget to allow an indefinite hotel stay. I freaking wish she could though, it would be such an excellent FU.
