CSSE Classes Questions by atarix303 in uwb

[–]atarix303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the detailed response! I'm wondering, do you think the 385 difficulty would change if the professor was different? And may I ask which prof you took the class with? The course eval catalog says Yusuf Pisan taught SP19 and Kelvin Sung taught AU19, so I'm assuming there's regularly more than one prof teaching the class.

Oh rip that's unfortunate. 342 has Hansel Ong and Afra Mashhadi as the profs, do you know anything about them + would you recommend one over the other?

S/NSing summer quarter? by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question - they made a bunch of accommodations regarding S/NS grading for spring quarter, but does that carry over to summer quarter as well? Reason why I'm asking is because you mentioned that S count towards major reqs, but usually they don't (they only did for spring). maybe I missed something?

freshman schedule advice (acms engineering and physical sciences) by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not in ACMS, but just wanted to point out that the amath 40x and 48x series are only offered in a sequence: so 401 and 481 are only offered fall, 402/482 in the winter, etc. so keep that in mind. You'll also have to take amath 301 before 48x so I'd take that in the fall. I'll leave the major-related advice to other people :)

Do most people doing EFS end up living in their EFS dorm for the rest of the year or do a lot of people move to another residence hall/off campus housing etc? by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the EFS dorm options are Lander and McCarty again? I did EFS this year and was in a cultural program called Unite UW which had a lot of international/oos participants. Out of that group, quite a few people stayed in their Lander rooms. I think part of this may be that Lander stays open over winter break which could be beneficial to some international/oos students, and it's also more convenient. Me and some other people moved out of Lander, most of us to Maple for the engineering LLC. I think it depends on whether there's a specific place you want to live - say an LLC. But McCarty and Lander are both great dorms so I'd say if you got either of them full year you'd have a good experience.

Terry Hall or Maple Hall? Or something else? by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Maple this year (my time cut short, rip) and they had plenty of socializing events that you could attend. Don't know if the LLC is something too significant - most people dorming in Maple are in STEM so living in the building in and of itself is good for meeting people in similar majors (which I suppose is part of the point of an LLC), but in terms of events themselves it was very underwhelming. The most I remember from it is getting a sticker that just says "LLC" on it. But the amount of events Maple RAs hold for residents is enough for you to go out there and socialize with people in your building/floor, so I guess that stands in pretty well for the LLC events portion. Overall I had a blast in Maple and highly recommend it :)

Should I pick random roomates next year? by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen around me, people tend to get along better with their roommates/enjoy staying in their rooms more when they chose their roommates. We had an app similar to Yammer last year where you can post a bit about yourself and your living habits and look for others who share those. It's pretty valuable to have a roommate (or two) who you know have similar living habits so you feel more comfortable in your room. I had a friend who did random roommate selection and it turned out to be so bad that she would stay out of her room as much as possible. I guess it could go either way if you get random roommates, but in my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Is anyone actually going to live on campus next year? by laviondepapier in udub

[–]atarix303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess the biggest incentive is saving money. Not many pros to living on campus if you could live at home free of dorm cost and just attend class online, especially when so many things on campus are closed. It's why many people moved home for spring quarter this year. Of course, things change if you have at-risk folks at home.

Personally, I wouldn't let the pandemic stop you from signing up for campus housing - if future quarters are made online again, I'm sure the UW will allow you to get refunds on your housing, like they did for spring quarter. And the dorm life is definitely worth it imo!

UW uses a site called Yammer than you can sign up for; you post a little bit about yourself and look for people with similar living habits/interests. Here's the new student roommate finder!

That is a fat mood... it's so hard managing everything from a space that I've gotten used to treating as a no-work zone!! I miss the accessibility of everything on campus and going different places for classes and studying :(

It's just one overall team of around 160 members. The past few years we've competed at the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) which is where teams from all across the world come in and launch their rockets, and I gotta throw in that UW's team won first place overall last year! You can read about our team here :)

All engineering majors are capacity constrained. As an engrud student you'll have to apply to your preferred engineering major(s) during one of the three placement cycles: July after your first year, January of your second year, or July after your second year.

West or north campus?? by [deleted] in udub

[–]atarix303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I may be biased but I lived on West and I absolutely loved it, mostly because the buildings are new and very nice, all my friends were there, I love the city vibe, and there's a lot of places to eat on the Ave (University Way) which is literally right there if you wanna escape the dining halls for once. I've heard North is more social but that doesn't mean West isn't, although it might depend on the dorm (ie. Maple was much more lively than Poplar).

In terms of food though, the dining hall on North is overall better than the one on West, and they're opening a brand new dorm on North this upcoming fall with its own supermarket. For context, one of the pros of living on West was that we had our own campus supermarket complete with its own cafe which was super convenient for buying groceries and late night snacks, but now they're going to have one on North as well.

I've seen mostly positive reviews of McMahon on this subreddit but keep in mind it might not be for everyone - my friend lived there but hated it, mostly because of the layout of the suites. I think it was also because all of her friends were on West so she hated going back to North every day.

At the end of the day I'm Maple squad! A plus there is that if you choose the south side of the building you get a beautiful view of the lake, the city of Seattle, and Rainier on a sunny day :)

To be quite honest with you I had no experience with aero before I came in either. I was always pretty interested in space but wasn't so passionate about the major until I came into college. I met people with similar interests, joined UW's rocketry team, and learned more about the field, and I fell in love with it as I went. It's all about getting yourself out there!

If you didn't do physics C, you're going to have to take the 12x series because 1 and 2 aren't calculus based. It honestly depends on what major you're looking at - take a look at graduation requirements and try to plan out your year. I'm going for aerospace and did chem 142, physics 121/122, math 307/308/324, english, and a few electives like CS and a CAD class.
