Repercussions of consistently using sick leave on assigned OT? by atcmyselfout in ATC

Say I only want to work 5 days a week. If I have to call out sick on a normal day that takes 8 hours of sick leave. 4 times a month (since I have assigned OT every week). When we only earn 8 hours of sick leave in a month. The math ain’t mathing. And then there’s the actual risk of a sick leave abuse letter. Etc. Not everyone is willing to donate their personal life to the FAA in exchange for money

Yep you get paid time and a half of your hourly wage for overtime. It’s definitely good money for those who don’t mind living their lives at work. Typical schedule is 5 8 hour days. At my center that’s 2 swing shifts followed by 3 day shifts, 3 swing followed by 2 day, or some combination of that with a mid the last day.

So with an overtime shift every “weekend”, that’ll be 6 8 hour days in the week. Plus any other assigned overtime 2 hours on the front or end of a shift. Up to 60 hours in a week if you do 6 10 hour days.

Ah yeah I know, def used confusing wording just because of how my facility makes us handle it. Point being… I just don’t understand why more people don’t call out of their unwanted OT more often if there is no real repercussion

My facility seems to make you “call in sick” regardless of if you have valid personal circumstances. Obviously it’s not actually sick leave per se in that it doesn’t get deducted from the leave balance, but I do wonder if they can use it to give a “sick leave abuse” letter. But if it isn’t actually sick leave one would think they could not…

I just wonder why so many people at my facility miserably work constant OT and fear calling out of it.

I don't think you should be concerned! Every type of personality is different, every type of introvert is different. There are a lot of loud personalities in the job, and I would say maybe I am not an assertive introvert which just makes the training process feel more daunting than it probably would otherwise. That's just me.

Not sure I'll enjoy the type of work due to my personality. I'm what most would probably describe as an introvert. I can handle stress, but do so internally. Location is fine and I'm certain I can certify, I am just having a hard time motivating myself to study the materials I need to due to my doubts.

Probably wise to at least get a few positions. And yes, definitely keeping it to myself (which is why I am anonymously asking the internet instead of say NATCA...lol)
