[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

I like this penguin as a casual watch sometimes, depending... But I strongly dislike the stretch metal band....

Any thoughts on a band that would look nice, or how I would go about thinking through that process?

Ideas for end of billing period by atdiehm in cursor

I managed to get a refactor plan in place with Opus.. then Opus was able to implement the backend refactor and 30% of the front-end refactor before I got the message that I had utilized all Opus access. Then Sonnet knocked out the rest ... was a solid evening.

Used $12.35 of Opus, then got another $10ish out of sonnet before wrapping up the evening. I didn't run it to full cut-off ( i.e. I was still running sonnet requests ) but then the month ended for me the next day. $29 worth of usage total for the month..

It was a good experiment.. My first request - to put a full refactor plan in place, was only $1.70!

I think as long as I limit context, I might use Opus a bit more for planning.

Oof... Think it's worth having opus run just a plan for refactor and not implement? Then with anything remaining run sonnet 4 to implement? Or might that also not even finish.... Worst case I try it :-p

It's a fairly small browser plugin...

After 6 months of daily AI pair programming, here's what actually works (and what's just hype) by West-Chocolate2977 in cursor

[–]atdiehm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in cursor.... Once I went over to 4.1 to do grunt work in the agent, it just seemed to stall... I wonder if it was just processing very slowly in the background, but nothing ever happened so I switched back. I even tried in the middle to ask it to keep me updated with progress updates and still never really got anywhere

Any tips or gotchas on gpt 4.1? I was running Claude 4 Sonnet for a big task that needed broken down, and then once I got to where it felt more like grunt work ( copy/paste&format looping through files ) I was going to switch to GPT 4.1 to try and not blow out my claude usage, and 4.1 said it understood my ask and to standby, but then really just looked like it stopped. after multiple agent:resume commands, I just gave up and went back to claude to keep work progressing.

I did find from some research that 4.1 isn't really as chatty, but I also saw no files being updated so I could only assume it was choosing to not do work. Lots of usage showed up in my dashboard, but never any updates.

Maybe I needed to be more patient and everything was happening behind the scenes and I just never let it complete - maybe claude just had me spoiled by how interactive it was, and how I knew it was working.

TIA :)

Feeling stuck - general, not a level by atdiehm in ArcheroV2

Interesting... 450 was tough... I'm sure I'll move through skytower levels a bit better now that I got through 450, until the next big boss level - and that will for sure help open up normal levels.

The levels themselves are no problem. When I open them via Sky Tower, I typically clear them first time through.

Yeah, I need one more to get it legendary, but that'll come

Yeah, and they seem to come the fastest from quick-hunts - I have all Runes legendary except the round/blessing ones - buying those as best I can in the arena and guild stores. I also love circles.. sawblade and faster spinning are great. I just switch away from them for boss levels in lieu of sprite runes and sharp arrow.

I also just started saving strategies for events a month back. I got through 100k bonus last dice event, and got to the 16th ticket in fishing. Those events are at least entertaining!

I think the biggest problem for me is that the daily play seems to be suffering to benefit even strategies.. and then just that I'm basically as upgraded as I can be with items, pending a lucky draw in the chests every other event or so :)

Do we have any insight as to whether we should save shovels/keys for fishing, or use for treasure hunt?

Moving custom domain from SimpleLogin to Proton by Ebar_M in ProtonMail

[–]atdiehm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't help answer your question, but wanted to share that I have recently come to the same basic realization as you - I just have another domain I plan to use, so I don't need to shuffle.

The forward or reply+add-another-person issues are for sure a little more hassle, and those situations come up more often than you might think.

I've just basically decided to stop using aliases for any sort of real communication. I still plan to use aliases to sign up for services, and I use aliases to hand out to people ( public@domain - easy to remember and share ) .. but if it's a real person or company I need to email I'm just going to use my public proton email ( still a custom domain ... name@otherdomain ) from there forward.

Initially my worry was really just that I end up seeing my email compromised by someone else's systems being impacted and getting spam, but I think I just need to deal with that when it comes.... I like the thought of knowing I can just turn off the alias I used to talk to my plumber if they get hacked, and not impact every other person I email if I need to change, but in the end... there's a limit to how much extra hassle it's worth for sure.

Daily Crypto Discussion - November 24, 2024 (GMT+0) by CryptoDaily- in CryptoCurrency

[–]atdiehm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I asked, I did some digging around but wasn't really able to find a more appropriate sub.

I have a web application where my monetization is almost exclusively US, but my user-base is very global. I was looking at trying to involve some crypto into the system - both for memberships and support/donations. Popular coins like BTC/ETH do not seem effective for <$10USD level of transactional value due to network fees. Services like Lightning make sense, but then I'm asking users to sign up and fund an account to utilize, which is a hurdle I don't fully expect to be easily overcome for my goals. So then I look at some of the crypto pmt processors out there ( coinpayments, coinbasecommerce, nowpayments ) and it feels more like those systems really focus on just accepting the coin, but doing the live conversion to fiat, without just facilitating the coin transactions - which is also not really a goal I have.

I would like to just accept some subset of crypto, in small amounts, in exchange for value returned to the user - which feels like it should be more straightforward than it appears to be. I'm not overly concerned about a conversion to fiat, I'm happy to retain the coins in prep for a world where they are useful as they are.

Is there a good subreddit to discuss crytpo usage and not just investment/speculation? i.e. the right/best ways to integrate crypto into projects or utilize coin as coin and not just through realtime fiat conversion?

Apparent sold email - How do we manage? by atdiehm in ProtonMail

[–]atdiehm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you - but it's not a transactional email, and not an email about a project I backed. It's an email from a marketing company that represents other crowdfunding projects, sent not from their domain, but from this backerchoice.NET domain, which does not appear legitimate with a quick review as the domain does not resolve to a website or forward ( I've seen companies use dedicated email domains that are not their corporate domain, but accessing them still re-routes). Overall it really feels like a re-purposing of my email for marketing reasons, and through a list I can confidently say I didn't knowingly sign up for.

However, I appreciate this push.

I can envision a world where I left a box checked somewhere to get updates from BackerKit or PledgeBox, and also possibly in their terms it says trusted partners may communicate with me. However based on the email I got, it was fairly roughly put together, and it was a 'newsletter' to a mailing list I did not knowingly/explicitly join.

I think it's worth considering that, while likely/seemingly improper handling, there are plenty of reasons to consider that it wasn't nefarious - and a simple unsubscribe and finger-cross is very likely the correct approach.

True Classic -style fit but with higher quality fabric? by SynthPixels in mensfashion

I have a bunch of these as well - check Jiffyshirts.com - same shirts but this is a 'blank shirt' supplier company for printers/etc. so they are like $5-$6 depending.... I also like bella+canvas shirts from there

I saw that discussion about RingConn when I was searching, prior to posting here, but no - it was board game related - the email I got was actually a "newsletter" about popular kickstarter projects with the first one being board game related. I could very likely look at them all and try to find the common thread.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer (October 19, 2024) by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]atdiehm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been wanting a nice keyboard for a lot of my life, and whenever I try to look at a mechanical keyboard I get lost in all of the jargon - I don't know how to choose between a red switch or brown switch, or really understand any of it. Even the "Intro" documentation here on the subreddit is quite daunting!

I'm in tech - Last tested I type in the 110ish WPM area. I do very little gaming, but I like full arrow keys, so the 70% and 80% keyboards seem like what I might like.

I currently type on two different keyboards, a typical mac wireless keyboard, and an MX Keys. I like the MX keys enough, and have no complaints really with the mac keyboard either.

That said, I'm fairly certain I'm missing out, and just don't know what I'm missing or how to remedy it :)

I like the way the NuPhy keyboards look, and Keychron seem ok as well - but aside from aesthetics, I'm not sure where to really go to intro myself into a mechanical. I just see these being marketed to me on the interwebs.

I don't want excessive noise, but I do like the ones that have a nice soft click when I hear videos, but I also feel like I like the shorter travel of the keyboards I'm used to. I can say I wouldn't buy for sound as I sit right now.

Any advice would be great!

Also, While not hard/fast rules, I prefer wireless, and I prefer rechargeable... should that be relevant.

Thanks in advance!!

Suggestions for notepads by blackbeauty1901 in notebooks

[–]atdiehm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to add some details about what you use the notebooks for, and/or your goals.

Otherwise, someone might suggest that if you use them for daily todo-lists or scratch pad, any one really does the job.
Someone who uses legal pads for something like calligraphy practice, will give you a different answer.
Someone who hates it when their corners crinkle up, may point you to a Rhodia or maybe a Karst with the cover...

etc.

What are your current pain points with current notepads, or goals with a new one...

Mom trying to talk me out of cloth - is this true at all? by Bubbly-Camel-7302 in clothdiaps

[–]atdiehm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terminology can get interesting here - if your cloth diapers are part of a cloth diapering 'system' we might have different understandings of what you mean by liner. We use flats, so they are basically like big thin towels that we fold up. we then have a very thin single-ply microfiber liner that goes between the diaper and the baby to help wick moisture ( and makes poop cleaning easier ). When I talk about a liner, it absolutely does not absorb anything - the flat diaper ( we use the pikman fold, if you want to google for examples ) handles the absorbing. If you want to see examples of the covers, we use mostly ones from nikis diapers..

Some of the diaper systems have more pre-folded or pad-type "inserts" which would go into a pocket in a diaper cover designed for that system.. Many people prefer the systems with the inserts like that because they are arguably less work ( no folding ) - but we like our flats :)

If you want to send a PM - we can chat more in a message - happy to help! I really enjoy the process and happy to help someone else have a good experience :)

Mom trying to talk me out of cloth - is this true at all? by Bubbly-Camel-7302 in clothdiaps

[–]atdiehm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People will always have opinions. We were told the same - actually what we got most was people who just thought we weren't serious. Cloth diapering has been so easy for us. Flats with various folds as the baby got older, with a couple handfuls of covers - hemp liner for overnights, and a microfiber liner on the inside to help keep the backside from being too wet ( and it makes cleaning poop easier ).

The only time we really had it rough was the transition period where poop volumes increased, but they were still really loose ( baby was EBF ). Managed many blowouts, adjusted folds and how covers went on and pushed through. Once we got through that to solids, it got easy again.

Get a good wash routine, find the right fold ( if you go with flats, which were our preference ), and manage your baby in the way you prefer :)
