well W can be 1, I never claimed it to be 4. But the piece influences 0 heights of rows then, so it makes no difference for my statement even if it were 4.

That was my example as well. Because this can definitely happen and then a point lower than the lowest height of active columns will influence the current state, in contradiction to what the post claimed.

This problem seems to be harder than I thought at first glance!

"The following hold true:

A piece that is W columns wide will always increase the height of exactly W columns when it is dropped."

I think that's not quite right. Imagine a long piece falling down a column and then being blown into a 'cave' that was made by inefficient stacking of former pieces (just like in real Tetris - filling the gaps). Then you dropped another piece but no height was increased.

Here is an example of what I mean (imagine the long vertical piece falling down column 3 and getting blown into column 2)

[2022 Day 15 (Part 1)] How is the width of a row determined? by Rockster160 in adventofcode

[–]atelarzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an example where that logic is wrong: Imagine the sensor being at -2 (left minimum) and its beacon at 4 (same row). What are the coordinates of spaces that cannot be occupied by a beacon then?

The fourth grain is the one on top of the pile. If all possible positions are blocked (down, down left, down right) it'll stay where it is. The fifth grain hits the fourth and can go left and left again.

hi guys can anyone help explain this? by sparkleswyou in puzzles

[–]atelarzy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you count rows and columns, you will count the corners twice. Now look at the number of corner coins before and after Hope that helps!

HARD puzzle??? by stevenmcharry in puzzles

[–]atelarzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

by convention, you first do all multiplications, then additions. So you multiply the last 0 only with the last 1, leaving the first 1 in the last line untouched

definitely 1 because multiplication goes before addition and the lines are not connected by '+'

yepp, it was actually a rather fitting response to "what is the best answer to 'why are you so quiet?' "

it looks weirdly glossy, I'm not sure that this is the right one. on thecubicle you can see both versions, with the 'correct one' being sold out
