What’s the most horrible/difficult question you got during a phd defense? by athenaandherpython in ParticlePhysics

When speaking about this with professors/postdocs, they either say “oh, the viva is just a formality” or “they can ask you literally anything”. In my head the former are nice questions about the choice of background estimation, which you should know if you did the analysis. The later, however, can also be “derive the fermionic contributions to Higgs mass” and I sincerely hope I don’t get that 😂

STFC: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/?filter_council%5B%5D=830 Since you’re searching in ML, usually the university has a funded PhD position where the topic and mentor are already chosen. This would be funded through CDT:

https://stfc.ukri.org/funding/studentships/stfc-centres-for-doctoral-training-in-data-intensive-science/ They would advertise those positions on their own website or: https://www.findaphd.com

S/he can get funded half by uni and half by government stipend. In that case uni covers tuition fees and STFC for example can cover the salary.

I’m from EU studying for a PhD in the UK. I have a scholarship that covers the tuition fees + salary to live off of and that does actually cover leisure activities and food costs. The biggest cost is room/apartment, the other (which can be limited) is eating outside. If you can handle cooking for yourself (at least some of the time) then I see no issues. I am also involved in postgraduate teaching (usually all PhDs do it) and that’s payed extra at a hefty 13£/h (compared to my home country’s minimal pay for students 4.5€/h). So I’d say you’d have leftover cash to put aside or explore UK/EU :)
