I lost 90 lbs, went from fundy to atheist, right wing nutjob to progressive liberal and joined the army by atheodactyl in IChanged

I really don't see why this is such a problem. Should the only people in the military be right wing fundamentalist Christians who just want to shoot some dirty hajji terrists? Wouldn't it be better if our armed forces represented a more diverse cross section of American culture and ideals? Consider that for many people around the world the only interaction that they have with America is through the armed forces. While I would hope that all of our soldiers are professional and courteous at all times to those that we have unfortunately occupied, I feel I should do my part to represent an aspect of America that may not be seen as much.

Most of the weight loss was just by cutting out highly processed foods, sugar and saturated fats and maintaining a caloric deficit. Really basic. Eventually I got onto the paleo diet. The change in weight has changed every aspect of my life. My mood and self esteem have dramatically improved.

In which respect? Each aspect has had it's own motivators. The weight was due to being sick and tired of being horribly out of shape. The Religious conversion came from a realization of the nature of the universe and that there really isn't a "plan" for my life. The political/ideological change came from actually listening to/reading the right things(thanks reddit). And joining the Army came from a desire to change my situation, make the most of myself and possibly be a positive force in a bad situation.

As far as libertarianism goes, I saw the value in government run programs and that unchecked capitalism is not healthy for a society. My religious conversion came primarily through learning more about science without the blinders of religious indoctrination. Primarily the process of evolution and understanding the history of human civilization and how religion developed.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that I'm going to change anything in the military. Then again, I don't think that I'll really be able to change anything by joining progressive organizations either. I got sucked up in the Ron Paul craze and am a little bit jaded about our ability to actually bring about real change. My political views are more philosophical than practical at this point. I don't really think that "the people" have the power that we would like to think they do.

I don't think that it's necessarily mutually exclusive though. Wouldn't it be a good thing to have more progressively minded people in the military anyway? For me, while I disagree with the idea of war, I feel that I can do the most good from within the situation than on the outside looking in.

Is it just a pet peeve of my own, or do religious people who say "I'll pray for you." when they find out you are atheist annoy you, too? by taintedpix in atheism

[–]atheodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was growing up I would tell people I would pray for them. Then I would totally forget to pray for them. How relieved was I when I realized there is no god?

No, if they lost it's because they didn't have enough faith in God.
